I love Phantoon, I find he is a fascinating boss and over the years I have learned more and more about him that I didn't know when I first played through the game earlier in life. I like to avoid ever firing a super missile at Phantoon. If you can keep track of his HP you can use it for the last shot safely, but otherwise it loses a lot of time. Yes, you can avoid the attack, but it's slow/inefficient and there is also a potential you will botch the defense and lose a lot of health, and it's impossible to harm him during that attack. So you're guaranteed to lose time and taking a gamble with losing health while not gaining anything beyond the damage the one super missile did. Super missiles don't do enough more damage than missiles to make it worth your while. The way to do the most damage to Phantoon quickly is to anticipate when he's gonna fly in from the side and slam him with as many regular missiles as possible. This can deal a huge amount of damage in a short period of time, much more than one super missile. If you play randomizer, you can end up facing phantoon with very little ammo and weak beams. Phantoon is the reason I always recommend picking up a lot of missiles early on in randomizer even if you don't think you need them, like you can have 30+ supers but with few missiles the Phantoon fight will be a lot harder and slower. The fastest way to kill phantoon, which is not accessible in the vanilla game in the intended play order, but can be done if you play the game in an unorthodox order using more advanced tricks, and also it's a scenario that sometimes happens in randomizer, is the "microwave" beam, using X-ray scope plus charge+plasma beam. It kills Phantoon nearly instantly. However, to do this you need to first fire a missile, or else he will immediately close his eye.
I've beaten Super Metroid countless times over the years. I now feel like an idiot that I didn't know I could've used a charged spin to avoid being hurt with the swooshes of blue flames. I also saw someone recently shoot some blue flames to make a gap to jump in between when Phantoom does that fire swoosh attack. Never realized that either. **face palm** So what I got good at was timing it just right to completely jump clear over his fire swoosh attack, lol
Something I remember from when I played as a kid that for some reason doesn't appear to happen anymore is that you could avoid the flame speed attack by morph balling into the opposite corners.

I've recently been playing a multicart on my SNES, and so the NTSC-UC version must be the one I had trouble with last night. All my previous play throughs have been PAL.
When I was young I didn’t know about the super missile thing and I used to always use them and found Phantoon to be the hardest boss in the game. I think all these details are so cool, it’s what makes the game so amazing.
Yall do know that if you just choose to use super missliles when he starts attacking all you have to do is charge flip through his projectiles and they wont damage you.
The charge beam is in Brinstar and the special beam (that beam with "X" movement) you will need Power Bombs and Wave Beam (you can fin it in Norfair). Select the Wave Beam with Charge Beam and select Power Boms. When you charge, you will get that special beam.
Even as a long time player of Super Metroid, knowing how to dodge phantoons super missile attack is super helpful

I knew he did an undesirable attack if you use supers, but I didn't know a charged beam triggered a different attack.

Yes! That’s what I did. Never knew about the charged spin attack back then for dodging.
I remember that too, from my original Super Nintendo version. In the Emu- Version or the one from SNES- Mini it doesn´t work.

When phantoon opened his eye I just destroyed him with normal missles because I had about 80 at that point

When I first played the game this was the hardest boss for me I couldn't beat him now I kill him without dying
And the worst thing is that the last save station is a bit far away, because the Wrecked Ship's save station is deactivated before you beat Phantoon.

I don't know why but I can't bring myself to ever fight phantoon with anything other than super missiles.

The first time i got to this boss i only had 3 energy tanks i think? Yeah, that did not go well lol
And the nearest save point is a little bit far from Wrecked Ship, specially when you are playing for the first time.
