I can see a couple of potential problems with this: 1. The trick will only work if the spectator selects a card from the middle of the deck - if they happen to choose one of the top 4 or bottom 4 cards, then it falls apart without any real way to recover, apart from you as the performer asking them to choose another card which will seem suspect after you told them it was a totally free choice. 2. When cutting the deck after the four piles have been put back together, it's possible (though unlikely) that the deck is cut right where the chosen card was placed, putting the two cards it was between on opposite ends of the deck. If it's then cut a few more times, the trick becomes unrecoverable as you won't know where it is.
Hey, you can usually manage the selection with timing as you spread through the deck. Cutting the deck doesn't change the order of the cards, only the position of the top and bottom cards. So even if those cards become separated they'll come back together with another cut. Thanks for watching!
You can keep track of the number of times the spectator cuts the deck. The only case where the grouping could be lost is if the deck is cut an odd number of times. If they give you the deck back after an odd number of cuts, simply say "And I'll do another cut just to lose the card even more", or something like that. Your cut will restore the selected card between the 8 and 4.
