The snake is SUCH a metaphor. It represents the weight, the burden, of being under stress, influence, and Power of so many different things (under your own interpretation), and also this particular species of snake is the Green Anaconda which is on record as the heaviest snake in the world, at over 300 lbs fully grown at nearly 30ft. She definitely did her research here, but I LOVE her symbolism representation in all her videos. She's one of my all time favorite artists.
Shes talking about literal powerful people. She said we didnt chose to change. Like we didnt chose to become famous. Then she says you thought she was your age. And made her feel special. Then she says would you stop if you lost your contract. Since most people dont apologize until they lose their power.
While I believe this is true she is also talking about her ex. He was 22 and she was 16-17. there is also 22 seconds of silence at the end of the song.
Yeah I think he falls under this category of powerful people. Maybe it started out as about him and then she added other stuff to make it more universal. I noticed the silence at the end I didnt put the 22 seconds into account so that's a really cool little Easter egg to think about. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
@@mokiO_O she just did an interview and said it's not about a single person at all I guess. But I have to say I do think her ex played a role in the feeling behind the song.
Don’t smile at me first album/EP, then when we all fall asleep where do we go album, and then all of the singles (bitches broken hearts, everything I wanted, lovely, come out and play, bored, etc... however many more there are) Billie Eilish reaction watch/listen list
i think this song symbolises different things. at the beginning she’s putting herself in the shoes of a younger school girl who got taken advantage of, then she leads onto her experience of being with her ex who was 22 whilst she was 16 (hence the 22 second silence at the end), you see in the doc that he took advantage of her and abused his power by making her feel responsible for his issues, portrayed in the song through the lyric “you made me feel, like it was my fault you were a devil lost your appeal”. she felt trapped with him and responsible for the fact he would disregard her feelings, get angry (as he punched a wall in the doc and she took responsibility for that even though it wasn’t her fault). it’s mesmerising to me how much pure emotion and feeling she can put into a song, not only through the lyrics but also the visuals and the fact the production is near enough only an acoustic guitar in order to not take away from the emotion on the vocals and the understand of the lyrics and the power they hold. this song is so insane and necessary and it makes me beyond excited for the album.
You commented on her ability to match visuals to her songs so well. She has synesthesia, and associates her songs with certain colors and elements. She said this album, happier than ever, is overall a tan color, hence the cover color of the album. She talks a lot about it and it’s really interesting! Finneas and their father have synesthesia, too!
Ok, not only do I love your Billie reactions but just hearing how you talk about these important messages shows what an amazing human/man you are. Plz tell me there are other men out there like you lol. You're putting hope back into my spirit (corny but true!)

Also, both albums are so good. I’ve never EVER enjoyed every single song on an artists album but hers hit different. Look forward to more of your reactions!
I like that little gasp at the end...like that snake constricted down on her paralleling her crushing relationship, pun intended. What a powerful song with such a delicate touch. Thanks for reviewing
I cem here for Billie🥺🥺 . I love her so much. U all can relate right Billie fans😭 I want to meet her n hug her forever like seriously forever. I'm jealous of that reptile 🙄
when she said “power isn’t pain” i interpreted that it meant that “you had power over me and you did this so stop acting like the victim cos you aren’t in pain, i am”
This song was about her. She was in a relationship and she was only 16 and he was 20 and he emotionally abused her. So this song was written about that person
Billie really is special!! And yesss it was a real snake!! Start with her ep Dont Smile at Me and then her debut album "when we all fall asleep where do we go" 💫❤
Power isn’t pain is like the LOVE of money is evil not money itself. She is so good at her lyrical picture she paint and then the visuals for added punch.
your mind will explode when you listen to her album "when we all fall asleep where do we go?", it's one of my favorites albuns of my life, it's actually really really good
Addressing the question at the end: It would make more sense if you listened to the first EP and then her debut album since they came out in that order and you can tell how she is growing with each album. Plus then the transition to her newest album would be seamless.
In the song she talks about the concept of abuse of power on all levels: as someone who’s been abused, as someone who experiences power herself, as someone who witnessed the abuse of power. Abuse of power over someone who loves you, abuse of power within professional hierarchies, abuse of power based on systemic privilege.
The power over her personally was due to her being in love with her ex (which is also where the age gap reference stems from, she was 16 and he was in his 20s). In other parts of the song she is talking about situations she’s witnessed, which are likely more industry based (hence the reference to contracts being broken after “getting caught”) as well as generally in terms of having power in a larger systemic sense due to having privilege, and not abusing that. Then on another level she expresses a certain empathy towards those who do abuse their power, which I think is notable in the choice “TRY” not to. By saying “and having it’s so strange” she gives a nod to her own experience with having power, and how seductive it can be to abuse that (which I think is another way in which the snake ties in visually - the snake metaphorically biblically representing seduction and corruption, which she expands by adding suffocating to that list. And she does all of that without being preachy, with a sense of empathy, while not letting someone being abusive get away with it Scot free (how dare you, you only care when you get caught, you blame me for being the devil and for losing your appeal and losing your contract etc) being self aware, as well as being both vulnerable on a specific personal level and as observant on a macro level. While sounding amazing, writing beautiful lyrics that I could also go into a rant about: the smoothness of the snake being evoked by the phonetic sounds of the words they selected: abuse, choose, lose. The word “constricting” (verb and adverb) being implied through visuals of a boa “constrictor” (animal, noun) as well as used in one more form in the lyrics (the paper and signature type contract, another noun) . Also the fact that there’s a audible pause after abuse. Try not to abuse.... (me.) your power, making it so much more implied and poignant, and keeps the focus and accountability on the active person. Also while being a consistent visual artist in the video, which she obviously directed, her melding into and disappearing into the vastness of loneliness, and the countryside colours harmoniously embracing her new style, while also being a nod towards the strumming guitar intro. And when the camera pans up into the sky it reminded me of the song “lovely” (one of her very few singles in collaboration with other artists) where the line goes “isn’t it lovely all alone” just as it pans up into the clouds. And don’t get me started on those vocals.
I'd say do When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go first. Technically Don't Smile At Me isn't an album but an EP. It has enough content to be an album and I really do love so many of the tracks, but it wasn't really designed as an "album" per se. If you want more of an "album" journey, When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go is a true album and it's a masterpiece. :) Nice videos btw. This was the first I saw but been watching your others as well and expanding my own exposure to some of the artists I hadn't really dug into. One of the few reaction people whose comments feel meaningful instead of just "yeah I like that part" lol. Not to trash others but I like your content. Also you're super cute. :D
It's hard to say which album to listen to first, but If you want to go in chronological order maybe start with "don't smile at me", because then going into "when we all fall asleep where do we go?" you can see how much she grew from her first album to that and then to "Your Power" and her new up and coming album. Her second album is absolutely genius and was planned to a tee, so i feel it would make more sense to start with "don't smile at me" then go to her second album!
I have been really enjoying your reactions. I recommend the EP Don't Smile at Me first, then her first album. It will show the innate talent at 13 - 15, then the growth in the album written when she was 16 that was featured in the doc. After the album she released several singles that show continued growth, the most popular, Everything I Wanted. She has released 2 other songs, My Future and Therefore I Am, that are included on the newest album, Happier Than Ever.
definitely listen to her other albums, but i also recommend listening to: bitches broken hearts, six feet under, no time to die, bored, & come out and play
I took the "Don't act like it was hard" to mean it wasn't hard for her ex(who was 22 and she was 16 at the time) to manipulate and exert his power over an impressionable, naive 16 year old girl. It would be easy for most men to manipulate and abuse a girl that age especially when they look up to you like she said in the line prior to that one, "I thought you were a hero"
i recommend reacting to her ep first and then her album! just so you can get a sense of her growth. i also highly recommend listening to a couple of her singles between projects, specifically “come out and play” and “when i was older”, some of my favorites.
Definitely react to her EP don’t smile at me first, followed by her album when we all fall asleep, where do we go. That way you’ll be able to see how her music has progressed and matured over the years.
you should watch the vanity fair interviews!! she rewatches herself every year doing the interview and it’s so interesting to see her grow and her answers to the same questions
You NEED to listen to the Billie Eilish albums. I would strongly suggest doing the ‘dont smile at me’ album first because that’s the first one, and then ‘when we all fall asleep, where do we go?’ But that album needs to be in chronological order as 2 of the songs blend.. it’s amazing, but these need to be done all before July 30th as that’s when her newest album drops!! So hyped!! But yea, strongly suggest her albums. There’s variety and entertainment. Laughs and sadness, it’s a thing and I love it. Enjoy and hope to see these album reactions!! Love your work!
Hi Michael! I would recommend you to first listen to her EP dont smile at me and then her first album where we all fall asleep, where do we go? I think it will give you a better idea of her progress and development as an artist and also her struggles. Love all your reactions! Keep up the good work✨
Loved this reaction!! Also saw your reaction to her doc just now and I loved how detailed you are and def my fav reaction of the doc so far! Can you please react to her most recent songs NDA and Lost Cause! Thank you :))
This song is probably about Q and Billie's relationship... he was significantly older than her back during that year they were together, when she was still a minor (The doc followed them briefly, still pisses me off when I saw the part where he blew her off after such a hard day and took advantage of the Coachella invite)
Great review. Just subscribed Start with Dont smile at me then When we all fall asleep, Where do we go. From there you can go in so many directions regarding live vs studio, the Mahogany Session. The same interview 4yrs apart. The Genius break downs of lyrics and meanings. And so much more
obviously do the EP first (dsam) and then do bored, bitches broken hearts, lovely, come out and play, and when I was older. And then only then do the first album (wwafawdwg) then do everything I wanted, no time to die, lo vas a olvidar, and then do the 3 songs that are out for the second album (hte) which are my future, therefore I am, and your power..
I dunno why no one else has mentioned this yet but you HAVE to react to Zara Larsson. This queen is getting absolutely slept on and I just know you will appreciate her. Specifically her EMA performance from like 4ish months ago.
Ok so technically In her last relationship he took advantage of the love she had for him and in her own words she said that the relationship was ‘emotionally abusive’ and the snake does represent that person like suffocating her in the relationship and yes that is a real snake and she also made this song because she said that there’s a lot of girls and boys getting taking advantage of cause there age and also Billie was also 16 or 17 while he was 22 or 23
this song is such a strong reflection of an older man mentally abusing a young girl. “you said you thought she was your age.” really sells it. the ‘power’ being the age complex
The song also tells about a relationship between a student and a teacher who actually sexually abused that student. I could see u didn't pay attention during the second verse but heard u did heard the last line about them ending his "contract", his teaching contract with the school, u looked confused. The song has a multi dimensional approach. It's about both an abusive relationship and and actual sexual abuse.

Start by “don’t smile at me”. It’s actually an EP and it is REALLY good!!
you should watch the vanity fair interviews!! she rewatches herself every year doing the interview and it’s so interesting to see her grow and her answers to the same questions
Yes, it is a real anaconda. She always goes with real animals for her videos, no fakes here.
@Michael Beveraggi
Hi Michael! I would recommend you to first listen to her EP dont smile at me and then her first album where we all fall asleep, where do we go? I think it will give you a better idea of her progress and development as an artist and also her struggles.
Love all your reactions! Keep up the good work✨
YESS start from the beginning with dont smile at me ep then do WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
Loved this reaction!! Also saw your reaction to her doc just now and I loved how detailed you are and def my fav reaction of the doc so far!
Can you please react to her most recent songs NDA and Lost Cause! Thank you :))
I very much appreciate this Enma! I’ll be doing the album the day it comes out plus her two others :)
Thank you for the support!!
@@MichaelBeveraggi awesome!
This song is probably about Q and Billie's relationship... he was significantly older than her back during that year they were together, when she was still a minor (The doc followed them briefly, still pisses me off when I saw the part where he blew her off after such a hard day and took advantage of the Coachella invite)
Great review. Just subscribed
Start with Dont smile at me then When we all fall asleep, Where do we go.
From there you can go in so many directions regarding live vs studio, the Mahogany Session. The same interview 4yrs apart. The Genius break downs of lyrics and meanings. And so much more
Do her EP 'Don't Smile At Me' then her album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go'
love your videos :D
Do don't smile at me first because then you would definitely see the change and growth in her music
obviously do the EP first (dsam) and then do bored, bitches broken hearts, lovely, come out and play, and when I was older. And then only then do the first album (wwafawdwg) then do everything I wanted, no time to die, lo vas a olvidar, and then do the 3 songs that are out for the second album (hte) which are my future, therefore I am, and your power..
.."but power isn't playing" that was the word 🙌
It's "but power isn't pain"
I dunno why no one else has mentioned this yet but you HAVE to react to Zara Larsson. This queen is getting absolutely slept on and I just know you will appreciate her. Specifically her EMA performance from like 4ish months ago.
It definitely is Indeed a Real Snake !!!
Your cool dude! Thank you
Ok so technically In her last relationship he took advantage of the love she had for him and in her own words she said that the relationship was ‘emotionally abusive’ and the snake does represent that person like suffocating her in the relationship and yes that is a real snake and she also made this song because she said that there’s a lot of girls and boys getting taking advantage of cause there age and also Billie was also 16 or 17 while he was 22 or 23
eu amo como ele tenta entender a composição da musica
this song is such a strong reflection of an older man mentally abusing a young girl. “you said you thought she was your age.” really sells it. the ‘power’ being the age complex
Power is only a potential
react to her EP don’t smile at me then at her album When we all fall asleep, Where do we go?
please react to *don't smile at me* first
dudeeee you have to react to her full wwafawdwg album
i just can't believe how young she is and how successful she is. she isn't even in her 20's yet & she has a longggg career ahead
I know right?! She will be 20 in December.
when we all fall asleep, where do we go please
The song also tells about a relationship between a student and a teacher who actually sexually abused that student. I could see u didn't pay attention during the second verse but heard u did heard the last line about them ending his "contract", his teaching contract with the school, u looked confused. The song has a multi dimensional approach. It's about both an abusive relationship and and actual sexual abuse.
this song is about older man taking advantage of underaged girls. it happens so frequently and it's so scary
Can you react to the good times and the bad ones
Been waiting for that reaction forever
@@rebekahautrey1483 same
The actual documentary was 24 hours I think but they had to cut it down
I would’ve happily watched all of that
@@nomadine85 same
Was I the only one who thought your power was about being groomed by a teacher ?

Hey I really wanted to see your reaction to Anitta's new single "Girl From Rio"
I love that she used a real anaconda in this video . I agree with most of the comments I feel that the song is definitely saying someone in a powerful position is taking advantage of an underage girl but wow this song hits me in my soul
i would start with dsam and then wwafawdwg
i love this song so much i hope you did too and i new here
