around 25:41 min. Freecad 0.17. Only extrudes one corner of my sketch. Also had a hard time rotating sketch 45'. figured out how to resolve. Use "Sketcher" instead of "Part Design" to create your sketch, then rotate and extrude using pad in ""Parts" workbench. Youre welcome ;) oh, and hit the thumb up to keep this at the top!
Damnit...that was driving me nuts; thank you!!! Sometimes when I would cut the two pieces together, the ball itself would disappear leaving the triangles. I just undid the cut, selected the two objects again, and after highlighting the cut icon again and waiting for the popup banner to appear, THAT was when the cut would work correctly.
Thanks Jurjen Pijpker. Did you find any resources on why this has changed in FreeCAD 0.17? I can understand that the FreeCAD developers wan't to minimize the number of actions that lead to the same result, but when watching these tutorials it seems like things were a lot easier in FreeCAD version 0.14.
You don't need to select the "sketcher" workbench, starting a new sketch in "part design" works the same. I also found that, in the "part" workbench, you need to extrude the sketch first then rotate the extrusion (if someone finds a different workaround post a comment). For some baffling reason rotating the sketch doesn't modify the angle of the sketch but instead changes angle parameters in a new body which contains the sketch. Since the sketch is extruded and not the body with the rotation info, the extruded object just appears along the the original plane the sketch was made in. I'm pretty sure the Pad function is supposed to fix this but they removed its ability to handle the multiple surfaces, for more baffling reasons I can't understand.
Thank you! This works in 0.18 also. If you do: Part Design Workbench -> Create Scetch it will create Body component and bind created scetch to this body. And will not allow extrusion with error - Two or more solid objects.
In latest version (0.18), a body must contain only a continuous solid, you can't pad multiple solids. So create only one triangle in one corner with the polyline tool. Then rotate it and pad it as in the video. Now the idea is to create separate padded triangles in each corner. Just copy the body (that contains the padded triangle) and paste it into the project so you get another body along the previous one. Change the angle on the new body so it cuts through another corner. Repeat for every corner and change their angles until they are in the correct places. Do a boolean cut for each one and you are done. (only a beginner here)
aaaan here's the answer to that, thanks! I don't understand why they wouldn't allow that anymore.. But then again im a novice so maybe I shouldn't understand it either.
Thanks, Johanh! I had the same problem, I will try your solution now! Seems dumb that they REMOVED functionality from the program as it grew, maybe it caused problems further down the line. Anyways, thanks!

Using FreeCAD ver 0.18 one gets the result "Pad: Result has multiple solids. This is not supported at this time. " if you try to pad the 4 fully constrained triangles. So I kept FreeCAD version 0.18 and downloaded the legacy version 0.16 and installed it, which still works like in this video. Really excellent explanation of the steps needed. I have some difficulties with understanding why you always choose 'Apply incremental changes...' but I suppose I will get it later. Also for the developers I suggest the command and confirmation buttons need some debugging because not always do they work, so I have to repeat most of the operations....or maybe its me. Nevertheless a truly great piece of work!!! well done.
Very nice tutorial, like it!. For user who experienced an error with the message something like "Cannot compute Inventor representation for the shape ...", it can be fixed by adding a parameter, from menu --> Tools --> Edit Parameters, and go to Preferences --> Mod ---> Part, and then right click on "Part", choose "Add sub-group", Give it a name "CheckGeometry", then right click on the right panel, choose "New Boolean Item", give it a name "RunBOPCheck" and the value "true". This should fix the error.
If you are following along and getting stuck with pad/pocket operations using FreeCad 0.18 like me, you need to create a "Body" first, this is needed to do the pad/ pocket operations, so it won't work without that anymore (lot changed since v0.14). If you already created the "combined" object without creating a "part", then you could in the "Part Design" workbench click on the blue step icon, this will create a new body and make it active. Then drag your "combined" object into the "body" in the Model tree. That should work, it did for me. Before I did that it kept complaining about missing body reference. Once there is an active body all operations work in the expected way as shown in the tutorial. Hope this helps. Cheers
Great work! I am starting to catch on to techniques and terminology thanks to your tutorials. Good explanation about using symmetry. I was also having trouble with placement and rotation, which you clearly explained. Also, thank you for explaining when to use pocket and boolean functions.
Please help! I sketch the 4 triangles for the cutouts and when I try to rotate them (change placement) the three dots in the "Placement" line are greyed out and hence inaccessible. I repeated the process three times, following the explained steps to (what seems like) the letter. Still, no success. Edit: I just succeded, but it is the line entitled "Attachment" and not "Placement" that I was supposed to edit. I am also apparently not running the same version of FreeCAD as OP, which does not surprise me now that I see the video is from 2015. Comments will still be appereciated!
24:37 In FreeCAD 0.19 There is no 3 dots next to placement (using 0.19 because of the 0.18 sheet addons missing bug). How does one rotate the triangles?
In reference to the first 56 deg. cut, I had to make the 100 deg. cut, the 130 deg.cut then the 56deg. cut. If I did the 56 deg. cut first, the drawing became too distorted. This is my 3rd attempt on this tutorial soooooooo.... stick with it.
I had the same problem, and noticed that my Model view tree shows a Body which he did not have, under which my Sketch had been created. So I drug the Sketch up to the Unnamed document (so that it's no longer under the Body), then highlighted Body and hit Delete. After that, I could highlight the Sketch and edit the Placement.
It's true that this allows you to edit the sketches placement, but when I do this the angle and orientation of the sketch around the z axis becomes very strange.... Before I edited the bodys placement because I couldnt edit the sketch, and at 45 degrees it looked identical to the instructors object. Now at 45 degrees the four triangles are completely detatched from the object and each one is oriented dead center on one of the faces.
@@ThereIsOneTruth thank you for your help. It is appreciated much ! FreeCad v0.18 Well, moving sketch into document then deleting the body enables the three dots on placement. But after change placement of sketch, when click pad, SolidCad gives this error: "In order to use Part Desing you need an active Body object in the document. Please make one active (double click) or create one ..." I could not achieve yet. If I find a solution, I am going to write here.

I'm using the FreeCAD 0.18. I did the first cube with the booleans for the holes. After that I built the sketch of the four triangles to cut off the corners. I rotate the sketch and when I click on "pad" I got this error message. "Pad: Result has multiple solids. This is not supported at this time." What do i need to do to be able to create the pad?
did you ever find the solution to this issue? I can only find people with the same problem but no solution, it seems thios used to work onb older freecad versions

I can make the sketch but then at 24:30 I am unable to change the placement of the sketch at Base, I had to do it at Attachment/Attachment Offset. I'm using (.17) if that is why. Very new, sorry
I started this tut. with version 018, making the cube with holes was no problem, even the improved bolerian cut out woth the cilincers was easy, but i couldnt make one part out of 4 diff. triangles. I worked around making one part of it instead, by drawing an cilinder around the triangles, and conecting the 45dgrs lines with eachothet. i hope the writer of LESSON 2 might tell me or i am wrong or if the work around is neccesary i case you have version 018.
why my freecad doesn't support the pad formotaion of multiple sketches? the dialouge box always appears and says it doesnt support the pad action for multiple sketches.
Thanks for all your tutorials. Is great to learn and be able to following you without looking at the video. But many times you use "apply incremental changes". Please, can you tell me, why? I am not able to recognize difference, except that, that values will reset. I am not shure, that my question is correct, because I am newbee. Thank you.
very instructional but why was it not symmetric? measure triangle vertices distances. anyway im assigning myself an extra credit assignment to make a symmetrical version. i wonder if that would reveal why it wasn't symmetrical in the first place.....
in 0.17, FreeCad won't allow to use the pad command to create "multiple solids". I tried creating one prism and copying it along the base then perform a boolean cut, but the result is that now the program won't allow me to create another sketch to finish the last 4 cuts, saying it lacks an active body for the sketch. Help?
Go to Part Design workbench and click the Create Body button (the blue "stairsteps" toolbar button), then drag the Cut and Sketch over to it. Now you can select the Sketch and click the Pad button successfully.
instead of padding the sketch i found you could use the extrude tool in the parts workbench which actually worked as shown, so just change pad to extrude
Hello thanks for the video ! I have a little problem, I did a sketch as you do at 24:28 I must have created it on a face, the problem is it does not want to move what ever the angle, the position, it does always come back even if I tick the apply incrementally. Any solution or explanation, is it a bug (v16) ?
hello, i try to make same as u did i try learn this software but i got error and stuck while trying to pad the triangle it said " link shape object is empty" for information i used 0.18 ver. how to fix it?
These are good but I really hoped he explained more about the thought process behind each step. And also, some tools are VERY different in 0.19 version. I found it really, really difficult to find a way around those...
Nobody freaking said it matters which one you select first. I'm on Linux and you have to select the cut FIRST then the object to make the cut, otherwise it disappears.
using v17 am new at this but around 25.30min after moving the corners to 45deg hit ok then on the next step clicking sketch does not highlight the white to green triangles been at this for days hav repeted from cratch 3 times at one time i did get 1 triangle to work.. any other ways
I thought snap to grid might make the triangle drawing quicker. But it doesn't. It makes it cleaner looking. But when setting the constraints, things are not quite perfect. like 56.56, or 99. They are very close to the constraints you want. probably enough that you could get away with it to the naked eye. I am thinking that either the grid isn't constrained to whole number scale by default, or that the program is handling the snap to grid function by setting the snap on one side of the grid line instead of going off the grid point locations (it could possibly be both things). This is all just to say that if you happen to like the grid and the snap to grid feature, while it makes things nice and neat looking on the macro level a lot quicker then entering constraints manually, it is not precise on the micro level. This might not be a problem for pure virtual representation (like if you just want to crank out a good looking 3D object quickly). But if you went to 3D print this, and you happened to be off here and there by a few decimal places, that could translate to skewed beads (sloppy print).
+TheHelleri I think that's the main point. We are talking about exact 3D CAD representation with exact data needed for CNC-milling, 3D-Printing an so on. Virtual representation with 3D modellers (and often ending up with triangle-mesh-formats like obj and stl) is something different.
Thanks for at very good tutorials so far. In lesson 02 when I pad triangles only one triangle is shown as padded the other three disappears, I am using version 0.17 on windows.
Can you slow down when pressing buttons. You click them so fast by the time i look you are already three steps ahead. So I did this three times perfectly following along and everytime i get a multip solids error when trying to extrude the sketch. What am i doing wrong? So frustrating.
Every time I try to make the triangles into the pad only one changes the other 3 disappear what am I doing wrong ?

On Mac, v0.18, i can't pad without making an active body, and from there i'm lost... everything i tried failed. i managed to get the padding but when i do the cut, the whole shape disappear. the body has both the cut and the pad mixed together so this is the reason and i can't deselect the cut from the body. any clue or hint at what we should be doing on mac v0.18?
Need help. I am on version 17. At 25:09 there is a placement. On mine, with the sketch being selected, placement is grayed out and will not allow any changes. What do I have wrong?
For me under Linux 17.2 and 18 (Beta) do permit all four triangles to be selected but the program complains about padding multiple items as it would result in "multiple solids which is not supported in this version". I am also unable to pad each triangle independently.
Excellent series of videos, many thanks. However, I'm having one problem with this one. When I create the four triangles they are sitting at -45mm on the Y axis (flush with the front face) and not at zero as yours are. If I go into placement I change the y position to be zero and the triangles move to the zero position but then immediately moves back to the -45mm position again. I cannot get it to stay at zero. It's obviously something I'm doing wrong but I cannot figure out what and it's doing my head in. I've tried creating the job twice, following the instructions to the letter each time and got the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

I've had the same problem. Stuck on it for a while thinking I did something wrong. Apparently version 16 was the last version that could pad those 4 seperate triangles simultaneously. Version 17 and 18 have had that function removed for reasons unknown to someone like me, who is also trying to learn the program.
When I set the length between the origin and the hypotenuse the error saying 'Cannot set the datum because the sketch contains conflicing constraints' appears. How can i solve this??
The message already should suggest (in red) which constraints conflict. So removing one of them should do the job ... Sketching and setting constraints is (can be) complex. There are only some guidelines, since many possibilites exist it is also nearly impossible to have some help/wizard available. Practicing sketching, following the forum on the FreeCAD-Homepage and looking at examples is the best advice ...
helo I've been working through your tutorial when i get to the point of the video 21:26 i have 20 degrees of freedom and I'm finding it really hard to constrain the triangles to move together with out over constraint the sketch
Uninstall ver 17 or 18 and re-install version 16. That version works using all four. Creating a fully constrained multi-part but non-contiguous sketch is something that the Part Workbench v.17 and ver.18 does not accommodate anymore. I hope they bring back this really useful Pad function in version 19.

Make sure you use FreeCAD version 0.14.3700 I had problems with padding the triangles that was resolved when I searched for the proper version
ver 0.17, can't run the Pad command. The Sketch is part of a Body, not as shown in video.
24:37 In FreeCAD 0.19 There is no 3 dots next to placement (using 0.19 because of the 0.18 sheet addons missing bug). How does one rotate the triangles?
Excellent narration. Thank you for explaining clearly.
You are a great teacher, Sir. Congrats.
Great instructional videos...going through them all. Love your accent ;) Keep up the great work!
Nicely done, very helpful, well explained...perfect pace.
@ 4:52, why negative value in the translation field moving in the positive direction of the axis?
In reference to the first 56 deg. cut, I had to make the 100 deg. cut, the 130 deg.cut then the 56deg. cut. If I did the 56 deg. cut first, the drawing became too distorted. This is my 3rd attempt on this tutorial soooooooo.... stick with it.
At 25:15 and running version 0.18, the Placement Box is greyed-out and I cannot edit the values. Bug?
FreeCad v0.18
Well, moving sketch into document then deleting the body enables the three dots on placement. But after change placement of sketch, when click pad, SolidCad gives this error: "In order to use Part Desing you need an active Body object in the document. Please make one active (double click) or create one ..."
I could not achieve yet. If I find a solution, I am going to write here.
@@omurolmez0 I failed at the same point the same way
@@ThereIsOneTruth I got this message after I did what you said, ''Origin "Origin" doesn't contain feature with role "XY_Plane"
Can't find Origin for "Body"
I'm using the FreeCAD 0.18. I did the first cube with the booleans for the holes. After that I built the sketch of the four triangles to cut off the corners. I rotate the sketch and when I click on "pad" I got this error message. "Pad: Result has multiple solids. This is not supported at this time." What do i need to do to be able to create the pad?
did you ever find the solution to this issue? I can only find people with the same problem but no solution, it seems thios used to work onb older freecad versions
@@Andrefa75 Thank you, I will try this again and try this method.
Excellent tutorial I am totally new to 3D modeling and you make it so easy to understand, I hope you do many more tutorials.

Thanks, I'll do my best ...
My german channel already has 13 tutorials online and i am planning the next four ones.
I'm planning to do all german videos also in english.
Learn FreeCAD I will look forward to this, I only wish I understood German then I could watch them all now. Thank you again for such a great collection of tutorials.
Good. Only a suggestion if is it possible. To enlarge the icons of command.
Good job! :) Thank you for your tutorials. They are simply and very useful.
Thank you very much for all your lessons!!!
I can make the sketch but then at 24:30 I am unable to change the placement of the sketch at Base, I had to do it at Attachment/Attachment Offset. I'm using (.17) if that is why. Very new, sorry
every time i try to pad the sketch it gives an error saying it doesnt support multiple solids at once... cant complete the lesson. help
same issue here
I started this tut. with version 018, making the cube with holes was no problem, even the improved bolerian cut out woth the cilincers was easy, but i couldnt make one part out of 4 diff. triangles. I worked around making one part of it instead, by drawing an cilinder around the triangles, and conecting the 45dgrs lines with eachothet. i hope the writer of LESSON 2 might tell me or i am wrong or if the work around is neccesary i case you have version 018.
in some complicated object, I want to move the coodinate to easy to draw but can not find out how to do it. Please tell me.
why my freecad doesn't support the pad formotaion of multiple sketches? the dialouge box always appears and says it doesnt support the pad action for multiple sketches.
Now you can select the Sketch and click the Pad button successfully.
thanks that worked for me on 0.17
it worked to allow it to pad, but appears to have made them one object, when i do the Boolean cut everything disappears
instead of padding the sketch i found you could use the extrude tool in the parts workbench which actually worked as shown, so just change pad to extrude
@@ThereIsOneTruth It is not working so
Hello thanks for the video ! I have a little problem, I did a sketch as you do at 24:28 I must have created it on a face, the problem is it does not want to move what ever the angle, the position, it does always come back even if I tick the apply incrementally. Any solution or explanation, is it a bug (v16) ?
Restarted the sketch and now it works... May be it wasn't fully constraint ?
hello, i try to make same as u did i try learn this software but i got error and stuck while trying to pad the triangle it said " link shape object is empty" for information i used 0.18 ver. how to fix it?
When i pad the sketch only one of the triangles becomes a prism, do you know how to solve this problem?
+TheHelleri
I think that's the main point.
We are talking about exact 3D CAD representation with exact data needed for CNC-milling, 3D-Printing an so on.
Virtual representation with 3D modellers (and often ending up with triangle-mesh-formats like obj and stl)
is something different.
Thanks for at very good tutorials so far. In lesson 02 when I pad triangles only one triangle is shown as padded the other three disappears, I am using version 0.17 on windows.
No, I am going further with some of your other tutorials.
same problem here
i found the solution. see my comment
Can you slow down when pressing buttons. You click them so fast by the time i look you are already three steps ahead. So I did this three times perfectly following along and everytime i get a multip solids error when trying to extrude the sketch. What am i doing wrong? So frustrating.
Wouldn’t it be easier to draw one triangle and use the array command?
Every time I try to make the triangles into the pad only one changes the other 3 disappear what am I doing wrong ?
Hello Sir. Excellent list. I'm just starting to learn FreeCad and your playlist is fantastic. in 23:19 I just get a "Cannot set the datum because the sketch contains conflicting constraints". I just did the turorial several times, wondering it was my mistake. If you can help me, i'll appreciate.

I just added with the video description links to where you can download the complete model and compare.
You could also register for free at the forum at www.freecadweb.com and post you questions there.
Within the forum a lot of capable users are writing so you will be lekely getting help fast.

OH Dear! Looking forward to this tutorial and discovered my origin in not on my model. It's there in the corner. I am a stickler for precision and would like to follow you precisely. Will press on but need help to find the origin on my model.
+Edward Pritchard . Solved, View>toggle axis cross. just went through a bit casual.. note to self ~ pay attention to detail.
Once again very clear!
OK so I tried it in the sketcher workbench instead and worked. Now I can change placement (version .17)
i did the same thing but when i pad the sketch it give me input error "Pad: result has multiple solids"
I have the same problem as you
Very helpful video - Thanks! Is it possible to just copy and duplicate the sketch and then rotate one 45 degrees and the other -45 degrees rather than recreating the same sketch twice? Thanks!
Tim Odell
Hello Tim.
Yes, this is basically possible.
I'm showing this in Lesson 07 - Propeller (with some comments on possible restrictions).
I think you should install legacy version 0.16 as well. It works, whereas it can't do it with version 0.18 on Windows either.
On Windows you can install both versions and run them seperately.
Need help. I am on version 17. At 25:09 there is a placement. On mine, with the sketch being selected, placement is grayed out and will not allow any changes. What do I have wrong?
Me too!
Is it just me or it's not possible to pad the 4 triangles in version 0.17? 3 of them disappear when I apply the pad operation
Getting the same problem.
For me under Linux 17.2 and 18 (Beta) do permit all four triangles to be selected but the program complains about padding multiple items as it would result in "multiple solids which is not supported in this version". I am also unable to pad each triangle independently.
Same here :-(. Have you solved the issue?

same
24:10 my sketch gets added under body and i cant edit the placement
same here, were you able to find a solution?
It's ok, I figured it out. I didn't change the workbench from 'Part' to 'Part Design'. I must have missed that part (twice) but all is good now.
yes ! perfect video thank you

I am using version: 0.18 release date: 2019/10/22
Please advice
I've had the same problem. Stuck on it for a while thinking I did something wrong. Apparently version 16 was the last version that could pad those 4 seperate triangles simultaneously. Version 17 and 18 have had that function removed for reasons unknown to someone like me, who is also trying to learn the program.
I installed legacy version 0.16 without uninstalling ver 0.18. Version 0.16 works just as in this video.
Great tutorial. good job thanks
but now how to make sketches from this...?
When I set the length between the origin and the hypotenuse the error saying 'Cannot set the datum because the sketch contains conflicing constraints' appears. How can i solve this??
Ah sorryI spotted my silly mistake
The message already should suggest (in red) which constraints conflict. So removing one of them should do the job ...
Sketching and setting constraints is (can be) complex. There are only some guidelines, since many possibilites
exist it is also nearly impossible to have some help/wizard available.
Practicing sketching, following the forum on the FreeCAD-Homepage and looking at examples
is the best advice ...
Thx
Muito obrigado!
Why can't this be done with a sphere
helo I've been working through your tutorial when i get to the point of the video 21:26 i have 20 degrees of freedom and I'm finding it really hard to constrain the triangles to move together with out over constraint the sketch
i get it to work kind of but i still have 1 degree of freedom at the end
don't worry solved it i had to constrain the hypotenuse to equal each other and have two sets of points both equalling 130 mm to stop it all deforming
Hi, I hope someone can see this, when I try to pad the sketch only one of the four triangle pads, how can I fix this ? Thanks
Excellent video! :D
problem at 22:01 it doesn't allign
thank you for your video
9:50, what is 27,5 mm? I've never heard of number comma number before..?
That's just the format they use for decimals in Europe, since he's (I think) German.
