      @@SoundSpeeds I see. What about your custom cables, any plans to sell them to the public? :)

    • @SoundSpeeds

      I still have a few available for sell. If memory serves I have two 10 footers and three or four 8 footers. Earlier this year I opened up my shop for a month but I don't do it full time so I don't often take custom orders or make cables to sell. Email me at Allen at SoundSpeeds dot us if you want to buy one/some.

    Thanks for doing this. Cheap cables are obviously a false economy but where do you draw the line? For a hobbyist like me it's about finding a cable that does the job but doesn't cost the earth. When I first watched the video I was disappointed that there wasn't more difference between the cables. But then it occurred to me that the RFI might be outside the audio spectrum and therefore not visible in RX. I'd be interested to know how well the cables reject interference from signals in the audio spectrum, for instance an unshielded speaker cable.
    I'd also be interested to know whether or not the impedance/inductance/capacitance of the cable has a measurable impact on the quality of the signal. E.g. (how much) is the signal attenuated? Is the transient response affected?
    Like all good videos yours has got me thinking and my thoughts are that maybe I should invest in a couple of decent quality cables so that I can assess the difference for myself - but which ones to get? And on that note, does anyone have any experience of using Van Damme Tour Grade Classic cables from WBC?

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 года назад +2

      I don't but I'm familiar with WBC. Very cheap but made from decent components.

  • @voiceovervandeen

    Longevity & problem environments are when HQ cables really give you payback.
    For most folks, in a half decent environment, good cable segregation & routing will get them most of the way there; but I fully realise in your field that mightn't always be an option.
    We need to lure you into the world of amateur radio next; then you can give your cables some proper RF stick, or get you onto a shop floor full of VFD'S, motors & welders.

    In photography, they say that if you average together a lot of random noise, it tends to cancel out all noise. I'm wondering if running the cables over the same device multiple times might be doing that as well. The takeaway I got from this is that the amount you spend on cables should more-or-less match the level of work you do. Those doing cheap work can get by with cheap cables, and those who work on the high end can justify spending more on their cables.
    Personally, for the work I do, having a noise floor around -109dB is probably okay. Condenser mics will produce a whole lot more noise to the point where the cable noise is inconsequential. Having said that, I tend to avoid Amazon Basics and Cable Matters anyways, and usually end up with something like Monoprice or Hoya.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 года назад +1

      You'd think the cables should match your work but in audio, problems compound quickly. Noisy microphone plus noisy cable plus noisy preamps equals unbearable noise.

    • @alantuttphotography
      @alantuttphotography 2 года назад +1

      @@SoundSpeeds You may be right. On the other hand, what's unbearable for one may be unnoticeable to another.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 года назад

      And ignorance is bliss. If you don't know it's noisy, you won't necessarily care.

      @@SoundSpeeds I'm wondering, what is a good self-noise for a small diaphragm condenser microphone. Currently have the deity D3 pro. And I believe the SNR is 84db, but I don't know what the self noise would be or if it is negligible. I have heard a great self noise level of large diaphragm condenser microphones, is something like the rode nt1 or lewitt lct 440 pure.

    0:16 - I’m not sure if your pronunciation of “Monoprice” might be a bit that you’re doing (and if so, that’s fine), but for whatever it’s worth, I believe that the usual pronunciation of “Monoprice” is “mono-price”?
    For instance, if it may be of interest, here’s a video from Monoprice’s official channel where they say the company’s name about 5 seconds in: ruclips.net/video/ecFnhG4qG7Y/видео.html

      Thank you for that. It's not a bit I'm doing at all. I'm not ultra familiar with nonpro products and a few months back I was in a voice call with people that corrected me when I called it mono-price. They must have been wrong or trolling me. Thanks for watching (and listening)
