    Installing our rudder once again...This is a huge step in restoring our salvaged sailboat back to her former glory. It really should have been pretty easy, but nothing ever is. The lower bearing (bushing!) would not stay in place, nor stay the right size. We had to channel all our inner MacGyver to pull it off before we no longer had the travel lift to help. Soon enough we'll be sailing...but not without a rudder :-)
    Check out our new store at www.expeditionevans.com/shop
    Thanks for watching-

    Here's what we think we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See • We Buy a SALVAGE SAILB... for how we came to own her!

    I see the rudder installation as a metaphor for your adventure. The rudder steers the ship, keeps you on course, and allows for adjustments when necessary. Getting it installed straight and firm is essential to the proper operation of the boat. I can tell by your work effort, your attitudes, and your willingness to solve and overcome all problems that your rudders are straight and firm. I look forward to watching your expedition in the future. Please keep up the good work. Wishing the two of you fair winds and following seas.

    Our Wauquiez (was a Beneteau company) has an identical rudder bearing setup, we also had a floppy lower bearing when we purchased the boat, but oddly the surveyor said it was not the bearing. We had a yard drop the rudder and what was happening was the glue has come undone and the nylon collar was rotating in it's housing. By chance the yard used to do commissioning for Beneteau and back in 2005 and had seen this problem a lot, and did quite a few repair jobs at the time. They re-glued the collar in but also fitted some grub screws to stop it slipping. Bearing has been great ever since (5 years).

    Great video. I love how you put your heads together and problem solve your way through one step at a time.
    I'd like to retract a statement I made on an earlier episode concerning Beneteau. If I can find the original I'll copy this there. In the video where you described the damage caused by it's grounding I was very critical of Beneteau of the damage inflicted by that one single accident. However, in spite of the insurance surveyors missing the critical damage between the hull and reinforcing grid, and the ham handed patch job applied there after, that boat sailed safely for 4? more Years until someone finally noticed what damage had truly been done and she was written off for salvage. This speaks to a design and construction method that is sound beyond expectation by Beneteau. So kudos to Beneteau for that.
    I'm still critical of Beneteau for not being more forthcoming on recommendations to fix the damage or at least in recommendations what Not to do in your rebuild. At the very least I would have expected Beneteau to send a rep and inspect the damage for themselves once you had it exposed. What a missed learning opportunity Beneteau had to bring back first hand unexpected data to their design engineers. C'est la vie! Their loss.

    • @wjhann4836
      @wjhann4836 2 года назад

      If you give credits to Beneteau - what is your opinion on all those findings from them while dismantling?
      I was very disgruntled about the SEVERAL bad bonding between the layers - in the hull as in the grid. For me that was no good workmanship in building.

    It doesn't matter if anyone else is proud of you (which I am). It matters that you are. You look at your challenges and do a great job of coming up with solutions that work. That is a huge accomplishment. Keep moving forward and don't ever stop marking the successes. We have a huge problem as a society in that anyone could feel anything other than remorse for putting someone (anyone) down. We need to fix that. I wish I knew how. For now, I will keep preaching. If you have nothing good to say, say nothing.

    Play in the rudder bearing is a good thing. If you have it tight, it will eventually bind. I've sailed yachts with tight bearings and it is no fun whatsoever. The play you had at the beginning of the video looked fine to me.

    Hi Jade & Bret, we have a 43 oceanis and did ocean crossings with our boat. If i may give you a litle advice ? The rudder post construction of you Beneteau is made with some sort of plywood "chair" glued to the hull. This in itself is not a bad construction, but on some Beneteau it is only attached to the bulk head in front by 2 smallish bolts. In that case when you go out on the ocean you will notice squeaking noise and looking down through the hole for the emergency rudder, you will see that the chair wil be moving some millimeters side to side. We replaced the smallish bolts with thicker ones and put 4 more bolts through the bulkhead in place, to reinforce the construction. This works like a charm. (Advice from Beneteau is to glue it to the bulkhead, but that's really difficult to do). The movement i speak about is only when on autopilot. The hydraulic autopilot is really really very strong and causes the movement.

    UGH! Feeler gauges! My first husband owned a large independent garage back in the day. He'd keep me busy (and out of the way) by handing me tools and parts to tune my vehicles. Most of it was fairly straightforward. But gapping the spark plugs was my Waterloo. I'd try so hard, and my husband would double check and laugh his ass off. So annoying. I never was able to acquire that skill. You guys are delightful. Sorry I'm late to the party, but it's a heck of a party to join.

    Great problem solving, both of you ! Surprised Beneteau doesn't provide a pair of set screws, circular wedges or shims etc to manage that fit problem. Your solution will hold for long enough, until next major re-fit in a decade or so.. was thinking you could use a waxed cord/stuffing box type mat'ls if needed as a push up/wrap in place bushing filler if there was too much tolerance left at bottom. Now we'll have to settle for 100% Jade all these next videos !

    You’ve got a great folding prop. We had one of those. In case it helps: be sure to grease it every haul-out; if it gets sloppy you can get shims; when sailing (engine off) it may auto-rotate - stop that by putting the engine in astern gear. One day after sailing (with the engine off but in astern to stop auto-rotation), when you come to start the engine you may find it impossible to get the engine out of astern gear; the reason for this is that you have something fouling your prop. What you do then is start the engine in gear anyway. It will start. Then of course you can use bursts of ahead and astern to try to clear the fouling. BTW, this happened to us one time, but an hour before it happened we met up with a school of dolphins that played with us.... and (weirdly) a few kept zooming through the gap between the keel and the rudder and then coming up on their side and looking at us with their upward eye. They were trying to tell us something?
