Featured on the classic 'Teaser and the Firecat' album, Morning Has Broken was adapted from a traditional hymn with words by Eleanor Farjeon. The song's message beautifully reflected Cat's growing spiritual awareness in the early 1970s; a sense of wonderment, awe and gratitude for the miracle of creation is expressed through praise for the coming of the new day. Cat arranged the song, giving it his own inimical sense of style and passion and invited Rick Wakeman of YES to record the now legendary piano part.

I woke up today (Easter 2024) and the birds were singing and I had to listen to this song. Timeless and beautiful.
Happy Easter pal.
Woke up this morning with this song in my thoughts, had to come for a listen! ☮💜😇
Easter is of the devil come away from it
Always try to start my Sundays with this gift of a song.
Cat must have been inspired by GOD to write such heavenly music for this timeless hymn.
Loved everything he did.
I'm praying for 1pm
Praise with elation, praise every morning, God's re-creation of the new day. Universal and utterly beautiful. This song brings me to tears.
This song is a breath of fresh air in this rotten world.
Indeed!😊
This world appears to You. Only God’s Love Is.
Songs like this is what made the 1970s such a beautiful magical decade for REAL beautiful music... born in 1965 and it's my favorite decade for music.
No music betters that from the 1960's and 1970's.
@@ndhan72 IMO I'd say 50s 60s 70s 80s and thats it.
Born in 57 and you are 100% right, the seventies were the best years for music

Is a complete tragedy. This man could’ve been raised a Christian/Catholic but someone interrupted him and made him into Muslim. God was not happy with that

This song was written by a Christian lady called Eleanor Farjeon. Cat Stevens found the hymn and converted it to a song. All words written by Eleanor Farjeon. Birth 13th February 1881, died 5th June 1965
Also the original words where "fresh from the word" not "fresh from the world" They recently changed the lyrics.

@@emmacherry2093 THanks for mentioning that, that's how I heard it and have always sung it. Maybe an error in the script on the screen?
I am glads he brought this beautiful peaceful
song to our modern times. I can only
imagine hearing the original. That would have been nice as well.
She was a close friend of the wonderful poet Edward Thomas.

Good to know (I never would have guessed)!

Peace to you! I have a son who is extraordinary and happens to be nonspeaking. He is so much fun! Anyway, while I was cleaning the other day with my headphones over my ears, I walk into the kitchen while hearing your song “Morning has Broken”. I pulled off the headphones and placed them on my son’s ears during that beautiful piano interlude. His face just lit up! Cat Stephens continues to spread joy all over the globe! Sending big love from Vermont this evening. Love is all around us. 🌼🌼🌼

I am posting this as my Song of the Day. Today is my 70th birthday which I share with the first day of Passover, Good Friday and Ramadan. All of this to say, these auspicious days filled with ritual are designed, in my opinion, to help us remember to resurrect ourselves to be the very best we can be. My personal goal is to do my very best to be a better person. To have gratitude each day for all that I do have, not what I am lacking. And to live with love in my heart for all beings. This is what Cat wrote about decades ago and what he as Yusuf continues to share with us. Have a blessed day. D🕊
Thank you for your kind and inspiring words.

We played this at my sister’s funeral. Just sounds like a description of heaven!!
We sang it at my grandma's funeral (her choice) right after Thanksgiving. I kept thinking "this seems so familiar, but I don't remember singing it in church..."

I was born in 1972. My earliest memory of music is waking each morning to my mother singing this song to wake my brother and I.
same 1972
I love this song. It transports me back to my grandmother’s home in Tennessee. I can see me and her sitting on the porch early in the morning and see the dew covered grass shine in the morning sunlight and smell the sweetness of the fruit trees that surrounded the right side of the house. I’d watch the school bus pick up the older kids on the road and my uncles to take them to the black school several miles away, even though there was a white school just down the way. 😢 But we were happy. Happy every morning, enjoying each new day.
That sounds beautiful but not much sunlight at the moment here in Wales UK though only rain loads of it
Beautiful memories

I'm not religious but i sing every morning for the same reason. If you can find the correct music to accompany your moment, you keep your momentum and the beauty of small things stays with you.
Especially on a day off 😊
Another fine example of the music in the 1970's. No other decade when it comes to music could out match or outdo the 1970's.

Lovely Yusuf. Absolutely lovely. You are my wife's favorite singer/song writer of all time. I bought the 50th Anniversary Teaser and the Firecat box set for her and she loved it so much that she cried. Your songs bring back so many memories for both of us. When we met in 1978, we used to sit and listen to your music for hours. Now, after 43 years together, we still love to listen to it. Thank you so very much for bringing such joy to the world.

This takes me back to when I was sweet sixteen, living on my own in a little 100 year old cabin in the woods....Waking up with the acoustic strings and familiar voice of Cat, hazy sunbeams shining through the bubbly glass windows, glistening green grass, crickets handing over the singing to the birds, milky chamomile cupped in my hands and a sleepy smile on my face 🌄 Thank you Yusuf💕
🕊 Sounds great 👍
What a wonderful loving and cosy experience you transfer to the mind as described in such a graphic way, to be cherished and to be thankful to your creator for it.
When you wake up in the morning with the early sun and your girlfriend or wife beside you in bed you can't get a better morning on this planet.

My husband and I chose this song for our wedding song as well. Cat has a beautiful soul.
The first time I heard this song I thought it was the perfect prayer.
It is a wonderful song. Cat Stevens believed in the words. Thankfulness, and graciousness. As we should honor God. When he lived here and saw how we act as Christians on Sunday but heathen. He found that in the Muslim belief people were more gracious to God and devoted by daily prayers.
Carried this song in my heart since a young age ❤
So glad Cat’s music is again in the public square. A true talent, woefully under appreciated.
He is fully appreciated by millions of people around the world especially his fans but also the media also for his philanthropy & by the Rock n roll hall of fame but most importantly the maker from whom his calling comes 🙏Insha'Allah👑 ☝

@@loritracy1385 its a minor point but who is responsible for Lieder..is it Schubert or Thomas Mueller. Is it Hubert Parry or William Blake that make Jerusalem a good hymn? Just had a vivid memory of my mother singing this to me to help me get out of bed in the winter when we couldn't afford electricity... she would build a fire and put my clothes near it, to make them warm, and slip them on my body under the covers, singing this the whole time.
Beautiful memory
Makes me think of my mother too!
No electricity ?And this was where?
@Mabs Yusuf and by "winter " I just mean "cold by my standards". Lived my whole life in florida, so I have no basis for comparison but im sure it's nowhere near as cold as it can get in other places. Though we'd have freezes they would make the ground crunchy with ice, it would never last the day.

The man, the genius, and the philosopher.
Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from Heaven
Like the first dew fall on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the One Light Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day
in this version, the word "word" has been changed to "world".
Wonderful lyrics. I never really thought about all those internal rhymes. They make the song so "coherent".
