How Buffalo Bills freed up over $37 million in cap space | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
/ nflonnbc
Mitch Morse is my only concern. He was a leader.
They've got others. We good.
Yea him and Allen were great together. Also worried about our D obviously but maybe they won't get so injured now
Something no one is mentioning is that the Bills have 11 draft picks this coming draft, so cutting those players is much easier to do when you have that kind of flexibility
They have late round picks tho not a lot of early picks
@@Kevin-ws6bl2 threes 2 fours, enough to find quality players
@@Kevin-ws6bl Wrong
The bills suck though and now they really really suck now....😂 Good Luck trying to compete with the eventually back to back to back Champions...
@@pierrerideaux9169 Who hurt you?
Von did an amazing selfless thing. More people need to appreciate that here.
He’s always been a team guy Broncos should have worked something out rather than trading him. Broncos fans were gutted 😞
Team friendly, but not "selfless". Selfless is take a true pay cut, they changed it to incentives that he will likely earn and it was in his best interest to not be "difficult" or he could get cut and then see none of the money remaining on his deal.
Without the gaurantees he would be a cut candidate.
Based on his production, his pay cut should be 90%.
Florio watching Eastbound and Down wasn’t something I ever expected
right? me either - but why not, it's a funny ass show
Yeah, that was unexpected. Referring to a jetski as "that thing Kenny Powers rides" is funny
Cap massacre=cutting two starters. The window is open as long as Allen is the QB.
Exactly, add a WR and safety, a few linebackers. Daquan Jones would be worth bringing back. Matt M comes back healthy and they are in place!
Tre had a ACL then an Achilles injury a year and a half later. So it’s not just an ACL Sims. On top of all that most of the players that were cut were aging or didn’t really contribute that much hearty didn’t contribute that much. Nyheim Hines was injured all last year. Poyer lost a step. It just made sense. Moneywise even Mitch Morris 32 you’ve got to get younger in this lead to stay relevant.
As a life long Bills fan….I really appreciate these guys, great players!! Mitch is probably the most underrated player in the group. With the upcoming draft picks we have I believe these are the right moves to make. I’m on the fence with Davis, great team player but drops a lot of balls. We will see how the draft works out for us!
4.19 mil for Deonte Hardy is WILD 🤯
Brandon beane is one of the worst GM’s in the NFL, these were the first good moves he has made in years.
Except for Allen i would say Beane has been average at best
How so? He's put together teams that have been a few plays away from the Super Bowl almost every year lately@@JoawMebs-im6ix
Was never releasing Miller his cap hit is crazy if they did. This was the only option
Simms cracks me up he looks like he's dressed for the first day of grade-school.
He is a weird dude
😂
The Saints are in it every year because they don't "fix it", they keep pushing it to the future. What the Bills did, even if traumatic, is the right thing. Purge the cap, use your 11 draft picks to revamp the roster, trust that your star QB can keep you on track for the year and go back at it next year. You're not tanking, you're reloading.
Not one mention that these guys are all 30 years old with their best years far behind them. Nice journalistic work, Florio and Simms. It's a needed reset of an aging roster. More to come for the Bills. I believe every one of them were on their third contract. That's the Story! Third contracts are sticky wickets. One would think Florio would have some thoughts on third contracts in the NFL. A balanced roster would have fewer players on third contracts.
And the Bills have 11 draft picks to help ease the burden
It's not an old roster and these guys are still elite players poyer, white, morse kinda
@@johnedwards2106 No they aren't still elite lmao
Gabe Davis is 24. But this is what happens when you pay your QB.
@@matthewm7487 Gabe Davis wasn't released; his contract expired. He is also as mid as it gets and has about as limited a route tree as any WR2 in the league.
Makes absolute sense for teams to 'amortise' the salaries of the players over time versus an ever increasing salary cap.
Yes. Issue for players is when a 90M, 3Y contract gets broken down into 10, 25, 55, and that's how most teams do it, the team will just cut the player and absorb a bit of dead cap from the guaranteed money.
Look the final years of Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill contracts. They will never see that money because teams are better off cutting them.
the problem with the Bills is, the injuries. no team had more money taken up by guys who barely played last season, or were coming back from major injuries and didnt contribute much. now Allens contract really kicks in. cant pay everybody, need to actually field a team. you saw it with the Chefs last season, ya they won another SB, but they struggled because it was hard to surround Mahomes with talent at basement prices. Bills went for it, and the injuries killed them. now they have to try and find diamonds in the rough to surround Allen. its going to be a rough offseason.
Every team deals with injuries in the NFL, Buffalo had no depth to cover for injuries.
Cutting half the team due to salary cap isn't going to help with depth.
Every team deals with injuries, every team top 3 highest paid defensive players don't get hurt, no one has great depth behind their highest paid, or you wouldn't pay them that much@@vinyllpreviews9462
@@vinyllpreviews9462nah we had depth. Just no depth for the depth that then got injured
The problem is the GM is highly overrated. Beane finally making good moves.
This is heartbreaking as a Bills fan. I feel like we need a wake. Hyde issued a statement at the end of the season and now Poyer leaving hurts. That pair has been dynamic over the years, in the past few they've been the walking wounded . Morse has also been talking about retirement, but had stated at seasons end that he'd stick around if Buffalo wanted him. The team is really going to miss his leadership. Tre' is so going to be missed too. He's a great guy that wears his heart on his sleeve. His ACL he came back from, but then his Achilles went out....psychologically he's not quite the same. Allen has already restructured his contract multiple times . Yes, he gets paid a ton, but he's worth it.
They are shot and have been for 3 years …. Great move by bills , but should have did it 3 years ago… bills fan since 1962
You got to get outside your feelings, bro. Most of these people did not either contribute like Hardy or Hines. Or they were all aging and or have injury history. You have to get younger in this league to stay relevant and a team with a bunch of 30-year-olds not gonna compete against a team with a bunch of 20-year-olds wake up
With Allen or Dawkins extension n taron Johnson as well. Buffalo will have 41 mill to spend . Crazy. That’s how you play with the cap. As long as you have rich owner willing to pay bonuses ahead lol
We only have around half a roster not counting the PS players from last year. Even if all 11 draft picks made the team we would still need to bring in 14 more players. Even if we had 40 million which we won't, that doesn't get you very much when you need 25+/- players
@@billsfeverthey've got a shitload of guys under contract compared to other teams. They just have a few glaring holes. Already signed Edwards who can start at LG assuming McGovern moves to center as has been reported. They signed Rapp who will start at SS. They need a FS, DE, and DT. Resign Daquan, Epenesa (or another guy from that tier), and you can get a FS that's better than 2023 Hyde for 5 million or less. WR can get cheaper and better than Gabe for 5 million or less with someone like Noah Brown or Josh Reynolds. The rest can be near minimum depth guys and draft picks. That's not half a roster.
Beane earned that paycheck today.
NBC should televise CFL , May - August 2024. Sunday Night Football
Argooooooossssss!!!!!
It's going to fold like every other non-NFL league has for decades.
Agree
Nothing about what the Bills did was stunning.
Exactly they are all going in on the correct moves Beane made. He got them back without losing the core group. Younger was needed.
Von Miller renegotiating his deal, NOT restructuring, is massive. That singular move will may well up keeping them in contention for several years. A very selfless, team-first move made by the man. All of his money was guaranteed.
Absolutely correct and another good comment by you Areola. 😏
Enjoyed the talk on how the cap strategy works, it's always kicking the can down the road.
Von Miller was stealing money with his performance on the field. Giving back some money was the right thing to do.
He owes more
Just wait until Miami pays Tua.
Miami is losing key players now without paying tua yet lol
Yup!
I think this is gearing up for a Diggs release next season if he does not restructure his contract
Or play better all season
@@JoawMebs-im6ixHe needs a legit WR on the other side. Teams took advantage of Davis not being a real threat!
Hi Bengals, your day is coming as well.
And Miami
The NFL needs fully guaranteed contracts. Maybe that will create the course correction needed to reel in spending. I'm sick of watching teams sign a bunch of players to frontloaded contracts one year just to have them cut a bunch of other players the following offseason.
Von wasn't a mistake. He just got hurt. Bad break for the Bills.
It was a massacre, but a very necessary massacre. Love everyone on the team, but everyone is beyond there primes, so this is phenomenal to free up this much cap and besides, we have 11/12 draft picks, so yeah, lookin like a good offseason for us.
It is a blessing in disguise.
Thanks Von for the home town discount!
The man is a gem. My favourite Bronco of all time
Part of me wishes von would have been let go so he could come home to Denver and finish his career here.
@@heavymetallabratFans were gutted when he left the Broncos that should never have happened!
I think he still has gas in tank I think they trade up for odunze or someone in the draft or amarius mims would be perfect for them and just help Josh Allen and Joe Brady
@@broncosbest6441 I agree.
Love how Mike went to Kenny Powers before Jetski!
Who is Nyheim Harris? 0:59
Morse will end up in philly really fast
Cause he is a 30 yr old white guy?
Yep that's what I said, Philly needs a new C to stay relevant
Buffalo is doing the right thing with their roster but I don’t think they will ever be able to get to the top of the afc with that head coach. He’s just simply overmatched when he goes against teams like KC and Cincinnati.
They're not overmatched they need a number to wide receiver Danny younger across the board and that's what they're doing they're getting younger faster bigger and stronger
They've just had horrible luck with injuries and team/community tragedy the past couple years. 13 seconds was coaching. Last two years was dumb bad luck. If Gabe Davis was healthy in the KC game they win by 10 or more. If the defense they fielded was the same as in the wild card round in terms of injury they win too.
Exactly
@@peterwilson48651 player is worth 13 points?
LMFAO
@@vinyllpreviews9462 the drop off from him to Trent Sherfield is massive. He personally dropped two perfectly thrown deep balls that Gabe very likely comes down with and one was a walk in tuddy. He's had some of his best games against KC pretty consistently. It was a 3 point game and would've been a 4 point loss for the Chiefs if Jones doesn't get clutch with the bull rush on Dawkins. That's with half a healthy defense. Gabe was the only boundary capable WR they had outside of Diggs. He changes what they can do on defense in the context of that game big time scheme wise.
It was time. All these guys are fading. Redo Josh and a few more and the Bills are looking at 30+ mil to spend...11 draft picks? Beane's gonna trade up at some point..mark my words. As a Bills fan I'm excited. Miller wants to be a GM someday...he's taking lessons from Beane😊
Are we really back to saying Josh Allen is the best football player behind Mahomes?
😂😂😂
It is almost like when Mahomes isn't on the screen beating a team, everyone forgets he exists. The 49ers were favorites for the next Super bowl, the day after getting beaten.
@@JohnClarkW 🤣🤣
Absolutely!
They cut all those dudes but kept miller lol
We cant because it actually hurts the bills financially. We are fucked with his contract
cant really get rid of MIller, his contract is too big, the dead cap would be terrible.
Miller will earn his money as a designated pass rusher you like Tua Rodgers lol
@@philstanton8912 oh ok I didn’t know that. Damn I hope he stay healthy this year for you guys.
@@philstanton8912they can get out of it in 2025 just fine. He took a pay cut and added like 2 million to his dead cap in that year. It was always going to be a 3 year deal at minimum. Sucks he got bit by the turf monster, but if he can be an above average starter in 2024 it'll be just a mediocre one.
Keep in mind Von wants to be a future GM so he's investing in that by taking a cut and sticking around Brandon for as long as he can.
They did the $30M increase in QB cost after 2 years of pushing the QB money forward for 2 years. And once this starts you never go back because the math doesn't work out, they will not be sub-20M till they cut the guy. You can take the cap charge once gone since you probably are paying under $10M for the QB. Von Miller was where a lot of the $30M was spent, that was not a good move, 30 year old pass rushers are only slightly better than 30 year old running backs.
The Bills are the 1st. It’s coming for Miami, Cincinnati , Ravens. It’s going to hit them all and very soon.
The Bills aren’t the first. KC actually went thru this first but got around it by letting Hill and others walk
@@chetjablonski1993That’s correct! Thanks for the point!
As of now with von is saving face hopefully that narrative changes next coming season
buffalo would of won the damn SB had von not got hurt. ill never not believe that
That Lamar disrespect was WYOLD! How many MVPs has Josh Allen won?
@manmythemenace: How many times besides his 2 first years has Josh Allen thrown under 3000 yards and under 20TDs?
@@codylasik1380 Mine was less wordy. Stop fishing for stats.
I'm wondering a few things but what might be the plan for punt/kickoff returners? Hardy was good and reliable.
So who they got left. I see them dropping to 3 in the division
Buffalo's draft class will cost about $5.5 million alone. Do they need to be cap compliant before free agency starts so they could sign a player or two. Seattle needed to cut Diggs, Adams, and Dizzly. Now they have around $40 million minus their draft class. I know this because I am a Hawks fan
Phillips is also gone...Settle might be too. They are nowhere near worth what they're getting paid.
Miller should have been the first to go.
Not that good of a Team so I doubt this sways any more looses there way, Josh deserves a better coach fur sure
What about Johnson, Smith, and Williams?
This makes the Bears trade for Bates seem a bit worse but oh well.
Just the opposite bills have quality young lineman, the pick is for draft capital
He's not a starter, just a good depth guy.
Josh should redo his contract, make him cheap cheap, and load up.
should cut tyler bass too 🤬🤬
Should have released Miller too, he’s done.
Saves on the salary cap
You are so right
the restructured
Can't, too big of a dead cap hit
Can't
You can't just look at their cap number. You have to slso factor in how many players they have on their roster compared to how much money they gave available
Can't untill. next season he had to rework vons contract it would be a cap hit to release von miller
Buffalo welcome to franchise QB cap hell. Enjoy
What are some of these players decided to retire and be coaches for the bills
They really should get rid of Miller, at this point.
Those guys were not playing much of last season. Some special teams players. Morse can be replaced. The Bills will be fine.
Boy Chris sure is enamored with Josh Allen. Hey Chris, Josh Allen isn’t the second best QB in football. That would be Joe Burrow. You know the guy who is 2-0 against Josh Allen. Yes that guy.
😂😂😂 dude you obsessed with Burrow??
Why does Florio always look like he has Jaundice. He always looks green. Especially on Football Night in America
The camera is desaturated or something, especially compared to Sims camera. There should be continuity between the two shots but 🤷♀ Maybe because of the window in Florio's shot they have to do that.
Florio also has a health issue or two that he has disclosed on his show ( like we all do). Props to him for always bringing it!
Too much whiskey.
He said that he’s got Crohn’s disease (a digestive disease)
How did they free up $37million? It's not rocket science, they cut 1/3rd of their roster. If they can't get some of these veterans to come back on team friendly deals they're screwed.
It wasn’t a 1/3 of the roster
@@chetjablonski1993 No way, seriously?
Hey Bill's fans! Bears fan wants to know were we lucky to get Ryan OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. Should we go for center Morse? Your thoughts.....
Morse is solid. hes a great leader as well. majority of Bills fans are very sad to see him go. that being said, hes nearing the end of his career, hes old. id guess 2 maybe 3 years left. Bates, the lineman you acquired, is a swiss army knife. decent at every position, great at none.

Well the Chris Simms homeboys came out in numbers here last week. And while you are entitled to your own opinions, you aren’t entitled to your own facts. And the FACTS are: Simms played in the NFL for five seasons primarily as a backup QB. He completed over half of his passes attempted with an average yardage gained of 5 yards. He played enough to have a QB rating in only two of those seasons, 34.5 in one and 1.6 in the other. I had no idea a QBR could get that low. Some think a touchdown to interception ratio is the true statistic to measure QB efficiency. Simms was 12 TD/ 18 INT. Most of his presence in these shows you see today he owes to who his father is instead of any profiency he may have had. And, finally, you’re welcome!
