I remember the month they took delivery of this car and I'm fortunate enough to have recently seen this car. It is better than the video shows. Impressive amount of work, care and vendor selection on this classic cabriolet! Well done Heidi and Franny!
Leaking tops on Speedsters are legendary; they were called “emergency tops” in the original factory brochure. The LED headlights that are coming out are not so white and look more old school yellow. With the prices these things are commanding right now (aircooled VWs and Porsches) you did very well. Actually the original paint looks awesome. Beautiful and well sorted car. Now on to Robin Masters’ car!!! 😉
Always appreciate how candid you are in these videos and the explanation on the timing, when to/not to refresh. Great info to have. Very much look forward to the Ferrari. As for paint - have to agree, wait until if/when the market makes it worth it or would add that much more value to the car. Please post the appraisal too! Would like to know when getting one makes sense and your ideas on who to have appraise a car for various purposes (insurance vs. sale).
Very rare to get such an honest assessment of a Porsche purchase and refresh! All the segments covering in such useful detail your journey are a fantastic reference for PCar home wrenches. Thanks!!
I really agree with not painting the car. You will not be so uptight about any small stone chips that would be awful with a $12K (partial cost) paint job. Secondly, there is an environmental impact when a car is painted, so keeping the original paint as long as possible is better for us all.
Really enjoyed the series. Glad you didn’t sell it. That would have been a great find for that buyer. Keep up up the great work. Having a 3.2 Carrera (89) made this series even more enjoyable.
Great job with this recap. I’m no expert on such things, certainly not Porsche stuff, but seems to me you’ve nailed the economics of this project. No cutting corners but not going over budget with crazy expensive paint job. And also enlisting the expert shops to do some some specialty stuff. I think The Porsche folks who see this and are looking for a car will pay top dollar. And wherever this car ends up it will take very little wrenching to enjoy it for years. That really appeals to me as an old guy whose getting a little tired of crawling around under cars.
I watched all of the RUclipss on your 86 911. I bought my Carmine Red, 87 911 Targa in 1990 with 30k miles. One previous owner. She’d never seen a raindrop or snowflake, and still hasn’t. I drove her for 50k miles and then parked her for 10 years. I wanted to drive her again. New Porsche dealers couldn’t/ wouldn’t help. 2 dealers suggested an air cooled Porsche shop. I called, visited and interviewed the owner, service manager and chief mechanic. They passed the interview. All new suspension, top end rebuild, fuel pump, filters, clutch and pinion bearing, brakes, tires, more hoses lines tubes and rubber seals than I could count, electric clock repair, side view mirror control switch, drivers seat electric adjustment switches…… I’m sure I’m forgetting a few more corrections. Bought it for $30k Corrections $28k I did the paint correction by hand myself. The interior had always been cared for but needed some rehydration. I think I’m $ ahead, and Red looks and drives like new. And she goes fast again! Looking forward to your next project.
Great video as usual! Now, the Carrera looks fantastic and I have to congratulate you for that: the hard work always pays! Cheers from a finally warm Canada
You two did such a great job. I've truly enjoyed following this whole series, and watching your channel grow over the years! Huge thanks to Nick Murray for supporting you two and getting me addicted to your channel. Keep up the great work!
Wow, what a series. Thank you for your detailed description and great videos. I’m a new 911 owner (new to me! 1988 Carrera Targa) and didn’t know much about these air cooled beauties… until now. I’m not as intimidated to work on it now. Thanks again. Don
Interesting video. I agree with the other commenters, good value overall. Beautiful work and the result is a very nice air cooled 911 for relatively reasonable dollars. Bravo!
That was my question about the LED headlights! Cool! Thank you for answering. Also, it's cool to see a channel that finishes its projects, haha. Great video!
Heidi and Franny: When I look at that beautiful engine, (22:24) all I can see is that black plastic cap on the fan pulley bolt and the yellow plastic cap near the top middle of the engine!! :))) Fun details!!
Excellent work! Your time, patience and commitment to doing things in an organized manner the right way are admirable and set the standard for other car restorers. Keep the videos coming!
Fantastic end result and totally worth all you put into it. Paint is always something you can look at down the line but I suspect if you ever did come to sell it, the potential owner will buy it for way more than you put into it as it is. Now enjoy driving it! Looking fwd to the 308 content.
Great job, between the two of you we got a very entertaining story of your history with the car! You made the correct decision on the paint, it looks to be quite good as is, and unless you're repairing rust you might actually lower the value of the car with a repaint. Looking forward to the Ferrari vids, and to you guys hitting 50k subscribers!
Franny, your work on the car is priceless. It's pretty wise not to sink a ton of money if the value of the car doesnt' support it, so well done. Looking forward to the 308 videos.
I think you made a good decision on the paint. Now you can drive and have fun with the car. The biggest issue with new paint is the first stone chip! Always enjoy Heidi in front of the camera. Love the hat!!!!
You make a good point about painting the car and then having to deal with protective coating and worry about keeping it nice. Better to have a usable car you'll drive and enjoy.
Wonderful job, you really keep your promise to make an episode on the budget to spend on the car as I ask for some times ago . Thank you 🙏 Very detailed. Looking forward to see the 308 project .❤️
It's been a great adventure to watch. You didn't mention the labor costs on your engine rebuild. Curious how that varies from state to state... Love your channel:)
Thanks! The labor we paid for is bundled up in the cost line (so, for the transmission at Storz that amount was parts and labor). Shop rates are $125-$150ish. I try not to pay for something I can do myself so labor costs are what they are I suppose...
You're right about windshields. I did mine a few years ago and went through two rubber seals (I tore one) but the trim was in excellent shape. Definitely a tough job! $14.5K to bring the car to this level was money well spent IMO. Adding the maintenance and replacements from earlier still make this a bargain. You couldn't buy one this nice for your total investment, if you could even find one! I wouldn't have painted it either. No need at this point. Great work ladies. Cheers!
The car looks terrific. One thing I was surprised you didn't do when you had the engine out were the valve guides -- the weak link on the otherwise robust 3.2 motor. That suggests that the engine is really strong and that you got a good deal. Also $500 for a windshield replacement sounds unbelievably cheap. I spent more than that when I replaced just the gasket and trim on the rear window of my '88, and I did the job myself.
Fantastic, it looks like its been Painted it looks so good, it has to be worth $70 K I wish it were my Porsche 911 ! fantastic /perfect Job !!!so worth it. the Speedster & this I keep watching over & over.
Really impressive, the $$$’s you saved by knowing “how to” (labor) is amazing. And finding vendors and getting parts and work done at a reasonable price. Porsche dealers just gouge on part pricing. Having most of the tools to do the job… all good, good luck with the 911!
Hey Heidi and Franny, I sincerely enjoy all of your videos (the one about the picoscope is my all-time fav) and of course the series on your snow white porsche g model :-) ! What is interesting is the different approach to refreshment in the States vs over here in Germany. Here you try to care for your original paint for ever ever (even for indian red which is a true uv light sissy), as a repaint would have a negative effect on the value of the car. Also led light is something for non-authentic rebuilds such as racers and also has a negative effect. Greetings from Germany, Aurel
Superb job, I'm kinda glad you couldn't justify a respray. Its now an honest solid car with it's integrity intact. Respraying unless it totally needs it, is for vanity. Get in a specialist paint restorer and he will inspect and hopefully bring it up like new .Thanks again.
This just got recommended to me and judging by comments it seemed like it was a cool build...im 27 and a bit of a porsche addict that likes wrenching myself on the older ones...i have 2 993s and a gt4 so im going to love going back and watching your build even if im late lol
Welcome! I think there were 36 videos in this series?? We also have a 993 ('94) and a '58 356 and the 308. I'm working on the first 308 video right now. I hope you enjoy the 3.2 series. I really wished I had some of those visuals before I started :)
@@HeidiandFranny Cool! I will enjoy that 308 video too because i have been debating on getting an older ferrari like that, or a testerosa...idk if you watch car trek but they used a 308 this past season and Hoovies mechanic bought that 308 from Tavarish and is doing a series on restoring it. Im happy youtube recommended me something worth watching that is right up my alley...good luck to you both and ill for sure be following along
Before I really get into watching in depth, you seem to be Sara-N-Tuned but closer to my age of 63. I love the fact that you guys have the knowledge, skills, and tools/equipment to do what you do. Kudos!!
@@HeidiandFranny She's a former Air Force airframe tech that's as obsessed with detail like you guys and me. That's what makes her great, like me you aren't afraid to work on cars that are upper end though.
Very smart decisions. Wait until the last minute to repaint !! Having to worry about every ding and rock chip saps the joy out of driving a car that’s meant to be driven. Seeing the Trailer Queens at meets breaks my heart.
Very interesting! These cars keep rising in value, so I still think you have done very well. The car is in great shape now. It strikes me that you have a lot of great service shops close to where you are. No matter what you need doing, there always seems to be a good shop nearby. You are lucky in that respect. There are quite a few ongoing 308 projects on RUclips at the moment, but if I owned one I would choose Franny to do the work! It should be another good series. If you go ahead with the LED upgrade it's something I would be interested in. Lots of local shops offer a service, but I would like to know the correct way of doing it before letting a backstreet mechanic loose on my car!
Wonderful description. And besides the economic value, you’ve saved another 911 along with your own and potentially the next owner’s joy of ownership. As usual, thanks for sharing your journey with us, and look forward to the next 308 adventure.
Great job and well done. What you don't add is all your labor. I guess you could double your parts estimate 20k more if you sent all you did outside to a shop. I believe you are in great shape for what you invested.
I have enjoyed this series very much. It is what brought me to the channel. Excellent work! The car looks great and appears to run very well. Get it painted when it makes sense to do so. That's always the dilemma with any car. Cheers!
So I got my car running on Thanksgiving '22 after the engine rebuild and "the other stuff" and been driving it all over the place with a recent trip from S. FL to NC last month. Having a blast with it. I've yet to add up my receipts yet and probably afraid to. I did a 3.4 Makle kit, machine work, racing springs, exhaust. chip, clutch- the full monty. Whatever it cost, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And once again thanks for the videos. The engine drop you filmed on this project got me started on my journey. Hopefully I see you around in FL if you're still here to I can thank you personally.
hi Franny, it looks awesome. well done!. a question: you did not mention how many hours of labor you have invested on top of the 40K$. did you keep track of it? thanks.
I didn't really keep track of all that... But you have seen the vast majority of it in the series. It is hard to track because shooting a video of a task multiplies the time by four or five (then there is all the editing). It's all a labor of love I suppose :)
Kudos, ladies. This has been so much fun to watch and I can't thank you enough for putting these up. It must be a lot of work! It's clearly a labor of love. I dream of someday owning a 911 of this vintage, but looking at Bringatrailer and other sites, the price for nice air cooled 911s has gotten out of sight. I am guessing you could put this car on BaT and sell it for $75-80k, no problem. Your details on how to do things and where to get parts I am sure is going to be invaluable to any home wrenchers. The one thing you didn't mention that I would love to know: how many hours did Franny log on the car? I would conservatively guess 400+. She is meticulous, and while she may not be as fast as shop rates allow, the work was done to a standard few shops provide. So, if you farmed out her labor to a shop that can do that level of care and quality, my guess is you can add $40,000 in labor if you're not turning your own wrenches.
Thanks!! Wow... I haven't checked BaT lately... Sounds like they are getting a bit nutty. I don't know if my labor was quite that high, but there was a bit of time off camera doing research and organizing a lot of parts and such. The good thing is none of the work is outside what a DIY'er can handle. These cars are pretty straight forward. It was a really fun project!
I have enjoyed watching this series. You have taken this car back to almost like new but I would not do the paint. Enjoy that you can drive this car and not worry about the occasional stone chip or bug splatter. I also love how you explain your work and do it with a pink shirt and pearls. You are both class acts.
Excellent series! Thank you both for taking the time and effort to film and edit everything. I know it's time consuming but we really do appreciate it. As for Nick Murray, there is a rumor going around that he will be playing the next James Bond. Sshhhh, keep this a secret.
Wow! She's a real beauty! Something I would definitely hold on to. Although I don't have kids, I would sell them for a ride lol =) Thank you for the honest pricing/cost of the purchase all the way to the end - i could only imagine what the cost would have been if you didn't do 98% of the labor. What a great chapter of "Heidi and Franny's Garage!"
I am greatly displeased. Not with you but with RUclips. I just had to resubscribe. I have never unsubscribed. I enjoy your content. Both of you did not strike me as the typical sports car channel. I'm a sportscar fan that is on my fourth Miata and have also owned an Alfa Romeo Spider. The Porsches I see on your channel are someday cars for me. I enjoy your content and am pretty ticked off that youtube unsubscribed me without my knowledge. While I wouldn't have guessed this, you give some of the most informative information on air cooled Porsches.
That was a very informative video, thanks for sharing all aspects of the costs associated to a full refresh ! I do prefer ‘preservation ‘ rather than a ground up restoration, I’d keep the paint as it is! I do the same on my motorcycles, vehicles need to show ‘their stories’ too! Can’t wait to watch the 308 videos!
Heidi, Franny thank you so much for sharing this content. You are an inspiration! Really enjoyed seeing that Schmutz go away and the diamond slowly but surely re-appear...tadaaaaa! Yahoo, good for you! Keep up the great work 🌞.
Nice video you 2 ....... I just sold a 99 boxster base I restored and I know I will probably regret it down the road because I think those are very sweet P-cars.
Hi ! I looked every video of the porsche series ! Im really impressed of your work, and you gave me enough confidence to buy one and work on it like you guys! Its gonna be the same model, cabriolet, white but a 1985 model ! Greeting frome Québec 🇨🇦 Thierry
You guys are lucky. Being able to do some of the work allowed you to end up in the black. Most vintage Porsche owners don't come out so lucky. As to if this is really economical, I would say barely. Of course I am completely ignoring the fact that this is a Porsche with significant prestige. From that perspective, it's worth it.
As always a great video. A greatly appreciate the detail you both provide on all your projects. It is that level of information that makes this channel unique and one of the best on RUclips. Should you paint the 911? In my opinion, no. If its okay for you both as is - just keep driving it. As Franny mentioned then you would want to add PPF and added cost. Plus reassess if and when you sell the vehicle. Right now its an “honest” car. I always approach a car buy - new paint? What is that hiding? I guess I would rather source that work myself (but I fully admit I may be different than others). I literally laughed out loud when you told the story of a guy driving by and stopping and making an offer on the spot. So hard to find good Porsche examples these days. I don’t blame him one bit, you don’t know what is available until you ask. I for one would buy a car from Heidi and Frannys garage in a heartbeat. Any car they have is the very definition of “sorted”. Looking forward to the 308 video series. Have you two checked out Number 27 on RUclips and his series of his 308? That series… is a challenge for the owner. He just posted a video of him taking his 308 to a Ferrari Whisperer, Iain Tyrrell. I will say Mr Tyrrell has a gift for tuning.
Thanks! Yes, I've kept up with that whole series and what a treat to be able to take the car to such a legend. I'm hoping we can do a colab once the 308 project starts. We'll see if we can make that happen :)
You guys did an amazing job on this beautiful Porsche and I love watching your videos. I would get rid of the sugar scoop head lights and paint the Fuchs wheel centers black. Perfect! Looking forward to the 308 video.
I love the series the car looks great. I think you'll find with all the work you've done that the appraisal will be a lot higher than 60k. Can't wait for the Ferrari!
I've thoroughly enjoyed this series. You folks did a fantastic job. Before you change all your headlights to LED's I would try just one. I found LED's are great for brake lights and turn signals etc., but suck for headlights. Looking forward to your next project. Always appreciate your thorough explanations and outstanding camera work.
Hi Heidi and Franny! I think you did well not to paint the car. The paint is still in good condition given the age and you keep the original paintwork which makes a lot of difference for vintage cars nowadays boosting up the price. Great work, love your videos, greetings from Munich, Germany.
Less than 40 grands for a well sorted air cooled 911 is a bargain! I think it would next to impossible to find a similar example for that amount
I enjoyed this video, really great job on this car. Looks amazing underneath. Stop 'hooking up' with so many people.

Thanks so much! Welcome :)
Awesome series to watch - nice project car and you won in the end - win!
Thanks so much! We'll see on the LEDs.
@@HeidiandFranny I would appreciate your insights!
Wonderful description. And besides the economic value, you’ve saved another 911 along with your own and potentially the next owner’s joy of ownership. As usual, thanks for sharing your journey with us, and look forward to the next 308 adventure.
Just imagine the amount of money you saved by doing most of the refresh yourself. I’ll bet you saved $60k by DIYing it. 👍
Awsome car!! thank you for the share!
I really liked this video. So many price breakdowns are general. I like the specifics. Thank you!!
Glad you liked it!
What you did not include is your time and expertise. You have done a fantastic job.
Hi great video and appreciate the cost analysis and the detail into the project! Looks great!
Thanks so much!
Great job and well done. What you don't add is all your labor. I guess you could double your parts estimate 20k more if you sent all you did outside to a shop.
I believe you are in great shape for what you invested.
Have absolutely loved watching the Carrera project !!!!.
Look forward to the Ferrari next👍.
Thank You for sharing and greetings from 🇦🇺
Thanks so much!
I have enjoyed this series very much. It is what brought me to the channel.
Excellent work! The car looks great and appears to run very well. Get it painted when it makes sense to do so. That's always the dilemma with any car.
Cheers!
Hats off to you both. Cracking job
We love you and we love your projects keep it up
So I got my car running on Thanksgiving '22 after the engine rebuild and "the other stuff" and been driving it all over the place with a recent trip from S.
That's great! Sounds like the car is super fun :) That's what it's all about :)
This car is worth a *LOT* more than $40K. Hoping to get my first 911 this year. I really appreciate all of the detailed videos.
hi Franny, it looks awesome. well done!. a question: you did not mention how many hours of labor you have invested on top of the 40K$. did you keep track of it? thanks.
I didn't really keep track of all that... But you have seen the vast majority of it in the series. It is hard to track because shooting a video of a task multiplies the time by four or five (then there is all the editing). It's all a labor of love I suppose :)
I’m just about to embark on the same journey with a 1987 targa so this was a great summary and will revisit your videos as I progress.
Awesome work and build. 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much!
Although I don't have kids, I would sell them for a ride lol =)
Thank you for the honest pricing/cost of the purchase all the way to the end - i could only imagine what the cost would have been if you didn't do 98% of the labor.
What a great chapter of "Heidi and Franny's Garage!"
Thanks so much!
Well, that's not good! YT can we a bit weird sometimes. Glad you like the videos :) Enjoy your Miata! Super fun car :)
Love this series! Please keep it up:)
Great Job, I'm restoring my 3.2 Carrera Coupe, and your videos are so helpful, thankyou :)
Great! Glad they are helpful! Good luck on your build!
Heidi, Franny thank you so much for sharing this content. You are an inspiration! Really enjoyed seeing that Schmutz go away and the diamond slowly but surely re-appear...tadaaaaa! Yahoo, good for you! Keep up the great work 🌞.
Thanks so much!
Nice video you 2 ....... I just sold a 99 boxster base I restored and I know I will probably regret it down the road because I think those are very sweet P-cars.
Beautiful car , you did good
Hi ! I looked every video of the porsche series !
Im really impressed of your work, and you gave me enough confidence to buy one and work on it like you guys! Its gonna be the same model, cabriolet, white but a 1985 model ! Greeting frome Québec 🇨🇦
Thierry
Great, congrats.
Great investment! Well worth it! Enjoy it!
Fantastic breakdown...loved the journey...cheers
I used to live a few blocks from Storz when I lived in Denver! I'd always ogle the air-cooleds parked outside 😄
Love this episode. Now I have to figure out code 30 on my 1991 964 Airbag/seat belt
This was a great series! Looking forward to the 308 project!
You guys did a great job on your car it looks and drives like new and helped a ton of people. Looking forward to the Ferrari build.
Nice work well done. I’ve learned so much from your expertise
You guys did an amazing job on this beautiful Porsche and I love watching your videos.
I would get rid of the sugar scoop head lights and paint the Fuchs wheel centers black. Perfect!
Looking forward to the 308 video.
Black fuchs centers, no. So boring.
@@saintpreferred9223 Yes, you’re right. White is very exciting.
18K purchase, you can't even get a decent 944 for 18K anymore. Well done! It's a beautiful well sorted 911.
The work you have done is amazing!!
You two are the best. I’m green with envy. Thank you for the videos
I love the series the car looks great. I think you'll find with all the work you've done that the appraisal will be a lot higher than 60k. Can't wait for the Ferrari!
These two ladies are great.
I’ve absolutely loved this series of vids.
Thanks so much for that. We'll check them out.
Hi Heidi and Franny! I think you did well not to paint the car. The paint is still in good condition given the age and you keep the original paintwork which makes a lot of difference for vintage cars nowadays boosting up the price. Great work, love your videos, greetings from Munich, Germany.
Thanks so much
