A biologist reacts to the news that two emperor tamarin monkeys were stolen from the Dallas Zoo. Police believe they were stolen because their habitat was “intentionally compromised.”

    00:23 - Tamarins Found!
01:03 - Taken to be Sold
    02:19 - Clouded Leopard Escape
    03:32 - Endangered Vulture
    04:12 - Suspect Caught!
    05:09 - Dallas Zoo Conservation
Thankfully, the tamarins were recovered! According to the Dallas Zoo, Bella and Finn were extremely happy to snuggle into their nests. And the animal care teams said they showed no sign of injury beyond losing a bit of weight. It’ll be a while before they’re back in their regular habitat, however, because they will need to be quarantined. Tamarins are extremely susceptible to human diseases like the flu. That’s why masks have always been required when working with primates, even before the pandemic. and we can be nearly certain that whomever abducted these monkeys was not taking the same precautions.
The stolen tamarins aren’t an isolated incident. It’s actually the fourth suspicious event that’s happened to the Dallas Zoo just this month. It all started two weeks ago when their clouded leopard went missing. And just like with the tamarins, police found that the leopard’s habitat had been intentionally cut. That same day, investigators found similar cuts to the mesh enclosing the Langur monkey habitat. Thankfully, none of the monkeys were missing and they were all healthy.
Rightfully scared for the health and safety of their animals, the Dallas Zoo ramped up their security. Hours after the tamarins were reported stolen, police released a photograph of a man caught on the security cameras. Then on Thursday, staff at the Dallas World Aquarium spotted the same man near an animal habitat and he reportedly asked about the mesh enclosures. He was arrested and charged shortly thereafter.

I am so happy that the monkeys were found safe. Honestly, I didn't expect a positive outcome.

I too was worried they were going to find those monkeys dead considering how cold it is here.

I was so scared to find out what happened...that person who did this has taken other animals also..I hope he is brought to justice and seriously charged..animal abuse/theft/neglect/ and the "M" word (m*rd*r) needs to be just as strict and punishable as with us humans 🙏🙏

I can't get over their mustaches. They are so cute. I've googled the Dallas Zoo. It seems to be a good facility. There are a lot of bad zoos and aquariums that do not treat their animals with proper care. There are also lots of great facilities. I'm glad these cuties were found safe.

Oh Lord, not again! The exact same thing happened to a bunch of golden monkeys here in Germany a few years ago..They were stolen from their habitat - a small island at the zoo. After a long search they found the guys but the animals were dead and police discovered a whole freezer full of exotic animals. I can not fathom how cruel some people can be. Thanks as always for not shying away from difficult issues!

@@OpalineAndTheBean I am not entirely sure, but maybe they couldn't get rid of them or maybe they tried to sell them for medical purposes. Anyways this was a gruesome story. In the end they charged them for animal cruelty because they cut out their miro chips without anesthesia. And of course this showed that they were doing this on a larger scale without caring about the poor animals.

While, yes, sometimes I did decide to remove a fence segment to the tiger enclosure to watch the game throw an error message, no, don't cut the bars for real, bad plan.
Pet trade is the likely option for the primates, but as far as the vulture and leopard, don't rule out the pet trade's more sinister cousins "private zoo" and "trophy hunters." Cocaine hippos were never "pet trade" and people do unspeakable things with canned hunts of big cats and other species. I'm glad almost all is well (RIP poor vulture), but it makes me angry. I feel like more security would help, but even if they went so far as to really secure their perimeter and put in metal detectors, drones could still be a concern. These idiots are why we can't have nice things, and I don't care how you commodify living things, it's bad news.

@@KPassionate As long as living things are viewed as commodities and not sentient beings capable of feeling pain this is where we are. Some languages and cultures don't have the word or idea "animal" at all, but we certainly are not among them. I follow enough wildlife rescue, farm animal sanctuaries, and rescues for small animal exotics to know that there is a lot of bad news out there.

thank you KP for talking us through this, and giving your insight and thoughts.
it's crazy that some people can be so obvious - asking about the enclosure mesh etc...
i admit i have asked at zoo's before now about the enclosure itself, not the mesh - cos i am interested how they decide what to put in the enclosure and how they "decide" the size!, cos i am just too curious!
Im glad this got some resolution, the animals might look ok, but maybe their brains might take a bit of time to readjust to being back with safe people - the keepers too.

I’m wondering why all these animal kidnappings are happening around the same time. There was a similar incident not too long ago in Broussard, Louisiana but it was squirrel monkeys that got kidnapped from the zoo. The twelve monkeys still haven’t been located but authorities did arrest the man responsible.

Why hurt an animal like these?, that vulture didn't do nothing to deserve it.
I love raptors in general, even the ones with a bad reputation.
I will never understand why people harm animals for no reason.
