- Explaining the Construction and Working of a Pilot Operated Pressure Relief Valve with animation
Pressure relief valve is used to divert the excess fluid back to the sump tank when the pressure in the system goes above the preset limit.
Pressure relief valve are generally of two types. One is Direct acting relief valve and the other is Pilot operated relief valve. The direct acting relief valve is a single stage relief valve whereas the pilot operated relief valve is a two stage relief valve.
The pilot operated relief valve provides more protection during the emergency situation when the pressure suddenly rises very high above the preset (set by pilot poppet). In that case, the main poppet opens and discharges the high pressure hydraulic fluid directly to the sump tank.
