Oh hun! I'm 53 and my style has changed more times than I can count! Vintage, folk, punk, goth, hippie, whatever the current trend is, and now I'm moving more towards the aunts in Practical Magic. I love your eyes! Looks like feathers.

Went from growing up until probably my mid thirties wearing jeans all the time, to now only wanting to wear dresses and skirts. Oh I'm in my fourties apparently..!

A reassuring comment about style changes in your 30s:
After a very bad car accident in my 30s (I lost part of my left lung but got to keep my right lung, punctured both, broke my right collarbone, sternum, many ribs, and had an “open” right foot fracture which was very ugly) I was in the hospital for weeks and recovered at home. I lost a lot of weight and my style changed dramatically. I guess I dressed and accessorized “younger”. I was told it was to be expected and not to worry about it, so I didn’t. I recovered completely and looked fabulous. 20 years later everything is still good! Don’t worry about style changes, you look great!

It's nice to see you again.
As for changing one's fashion preferences, I don't think there is anything wrong with having fun with one's wardrobe, so long as one does it responsibly (i.e. not buying a whole new fast fashion wardrobe every month and throwing all of the old clothes into the trash). So yeah, if crop tops are what make you happy right now, go for it.

I'm a relatively new follower (few-ish months), and love your content, no matter what it is! I completely respect needing a break from it, so no judgement for that! Keep doing what makes your heart sing, and I will keep watching it! Also, no, you're not alone; though I haven't set aside my long-time wardrobe choices of tees and jeans at ALL, in my late 20s I started gravitating toward skirts as well, which was a big deviation from the norm for me.

Not the only one!!! I am now 70 (!!!!) and 10 years ago I gave up the old lady slacks and tops ( nice as they were) for leggings & short skaters skirts( & short cargo skirts) different tops. Now into funky tunics & leggings ...hemmed all my jumpers & dresses from work days to short for the leggings! Added scarves and I am happy...my make up YES I STILL LIKE MAKE-UP at 70 (!!!) is not as wild since I do not want to look like Baby Jane ( Bette Davis ) from the movie! YAY for leggings and skater skirts!

You’re back! I’m so excited to see your way of making a folk costume. I’ve done several ”fake” folk costumes and only now started to make my first proper one. But I don’t really think that I can wear it often, after weaving the fabrics and all, it’s way too precious! For everyday use, one needs clothes that don’t take months to make.

    • @PrettyShepherd

I've gone through many shifts in my life. I am 65 almost 66 (March 3) I wore 70s hippie style in the 70s, The bright colors and styles in the 80s, all black in the early 90s, and now vintage 50s and early 60s style now. It's fun to experiment with various clothing. I experimented with hairstyles during each decade. Now my hair is long down my back to my waist. I do not have grey hair, it is auburn like my paternal grandmother. My dad didn't go grey and neither did my grandmother. So opposite your family.

YAY! I missed you! Yep, shifty shift. I am Neo-Edwardian. I wear the long skirts without the corsets or petticoats, and I wear 100% modern shirts, up to, and including t-shirts. AND I wear any high heel I darn well please under these skirts. The skirts, however, are made from vintage and antique patterns. Modern fabrics with ZIPPERS -- but old patterns. So, yes, I went from -- well, the 1980s (where NOT being like everyone else was HIGHLY DISCOURAGED) to the 1880s, and the 1940s, and the 1920s, and the 1380s. Wear your clothes as you wish. Your hair and make-up, too. And trust that you are not alone in this. I take pretty things from every era I can reach. LOVE YOU!! Love your content! AF!!

I used to dress 100% in black, no other colours ever, and it gave me intense anxiety to wear anything that was not black. in 2018 i slowly started to try and wear colours, and now i have a colourful vintage grandma-core look, which looks so many worlds apart from how i used to dress. I think it is a good thing to dare and do something completely different, it helps us grow, and be more comfortable with who we are. it makes us step out of our comfort zone and try something new. good for you to explore new things, and great to see you back :D

I'm so happy to see that you are able to recreate these folk costumes. I'm Polish and living in America, and I have such a hard time finding information about how folk costumes looked back then. Sure there are resources on the internet, but I still feel like something is missing. I remember my mother talking about how there was a period of time where Polish people looked down on traditional wear and called it "wiocha" (I don't know the english word to describe it, the translation I found is not it 😖), and in a very derogatory way, as if they were ashamed of it. My mother and I have been making folk costumes for my dance group for many years now just from fabric, but I would love to try my hand at thrifting a folk costume!

I'll be 68 at the end of this month and I have so many styles that I move from one to another and keep people guessing what my real style is. Basically my style is eclectic - a little boomer traditional, a little historical, a little hippy, whatever suits my fancy at the moment. So whatever floats your boat is fine with me. And welcome back from your hiatus. A little vacation from routine is always good.

  • @KristenK78
    @KristenK78 2 года назад

I grew up in the 80s, so my childhood fashion was...pretty much what my mom got me, in 80s clothes.
In the 90s, I went to a Catholic high school -- dress code/uniforms! And then to a state college, where I learned it's OK to wear *gasp* COLORS on top with a dark skirt, and not just white collared shirts! Plus late 90s meant vaguely grunge-flavored clothes.
Then there was my "professional clothing" stage, which has basically been having two different wardrobes for the last 20 years: what I wear for work, and what I wear on weekends. And my mom was still buying some of my "work wardrobe."
The last 2-4 years, I've been watching CosTube, plus you know, working from home in "pandemic clothes." Last year, after years of pants/jeans/shorts, I started looking for skirts and dresses that felt cute, and a little of my own take on "historybounding". It took until just a couple weeks ago to realize that I've basically decided I hated having two different wardrobes, I'd rather have things I can wear for the 2-3 times a month I'm in the office, or working from home, or just because I feel like it. So I still have jeans and shorts, but I'm done with the "work pants" thing. And I'm really quite happy with it so far.

This is exactly the type of video I've been looking for! I love learning more about folkwear from your videos. I've also been going through a Gen Z-inspired style shift, for which I blame Euphoria. I have felt almost guilty that my style is changing, but I've realized that it isn't a bad thing, that I can have multiple versions of personal style, and I know I will always keep my original love for a vintage/historical style. So absolutely don't worry about your changing style! Wear what inspires you!

Welcome back! It's perfectly normal to switch between styles or let our style evolve over time - the only people I know who always dress the same are those who couldn't give a rat's ass about fashion, they just wanna be warm. I went through grunge, the Y2K craze (it happened just as I became a college student and those narrow, knee-length, ridiculously flowy skirts worn over boot cut jeans haunt me to this day), then I became a vintage preppy secretary, then a Goth...and nowadays I look more or less like a cottage witch. I'm 38 and as far as I'm concerned, this adventure with personal style is only beginning.

I would love you to make a series of videos that each showcase an outfit from a particular region - showing your research, the characteristic details, the ‘do’s and don’t s’ and then how these inform your fabric/item choices and how you put a whole outfit together representing that region (which of the pieces were made, vintage, or thrifted etc). And all the accessories of course!
As an English speaker you don’t have access to your sources to I always appreciate the rich information included in n your videos.
You are also super lucky you can still talk to people alive now who wore these traditional clothes.

In regards to having a complete fashion change, I've found that all of my favourite people (my mom, all of my dance family, etc) had a shift around 30-ish. It's less about having a crisis, and more about realizing what's important to you, and what makes you happy, other persons' opinions be damned. And once you hit that mental state, a bunch of doors open up because you no longer feel confined to "what's good for my age/body type/area/established fashion sense" because the great part about fashion is that it's an extension of self expression, and can and should change as we do.
On another note, I'm glad to hear that you're in a safe area and finding a way to create content that is good for you, as well as makes you feel good. I, for one, love your sense of humor (it's exactly my brand) so I'm excited to see how you take to short form videos on tiktok! I thought Shouty Shepherd was quiet! Glad you are all back. Easy to get despondent lately, I was pretty much like that last year, had to get to grips with myself! My current day wear is holey t-shirts, raggy jumpers and tatty trousers or skirts. Cinderella! But who wants to wear nice stuff when mucking out ducks and doing grubby work outdoors. I don't know how you keep your lovely skirts so perfect! But I do love the tiered floral skirts (lace or broderie anglais is a bonus), or tartan/plaids. Otherwise just basic trousers and t-shirts. I'm leaning towards dirndl skirts too.

I'm 60+ now and am shifting back to hand sewn (with machine woven fabrics) folkloric outfits... Thanks for giving me the info on the cloudy weave wool skirt! I have a woolen one in autumnal colors sitting in a tote waiting to be used and I have 3 widths of black velvet ribbon tucked away in another tote with some black satin... hmmm, I'm going to see if I can get an english language version of that book you are using as a reference.

So glad you're back! I was kinda worried. I found your site months ago when searching long hair style videos. I had subscribed to your channel because you know how to have girlish fun in such a traditional yet international way. Seriously, I'm glad you're doing well and your cat too.

Doing the same thing myself. My therapist likened it being inside a rubber band in a certain shape and you want to make it another, it takes awhile to push and pull to get it right. Growing pains, takes time.
Also, I so do that with my cats too. One of them gave up years ago on my nonsense. lol

You're absolutely not alone! I'm turning 30 now and oh the things I've learned about myself the last year, how I've debated if its possible to mix my gothic punk style with my love for "cottage core wood witch" and colorful accessories, mixed with traditional Swedish clothing of the early 1900's. Fun fact: it is! And I feel like, among others, I have you to thank for this and for spiking my interest of experimenting more with how I express myself through my clothes and hairstyles ❤️

I have done totally 1950s, vintage heels. Then back to my punk casual look. Basically every so many I transition between the 2 styles. I am also in my 30s.

I am so glad you have found a place to be happy!
Please don't (feel) stressed about wanting an entirely different style (life, Clothing/fashion, or any philosophy or way of being). It is human nature. If you quiz folks on in, as in the live chat, many will say they have done the same, especially in their late twenties to early thirties. And yes, I have observed that it happens in later decades too. Even your fellow RUclipsrs showcase &/or imply this. Rachel Macksey (... uh spelling?!), Goodnight Moon & Emmymade are the only ones I can think of right now, but, I am fairly sure there are others. Imo, you're clever, cheerful and creative; at least, in your videos. My guess is that most of us subscribers will join you on your journey, for as long as you are interested in this venue.

I’m also becoming more comfortable in different styles of clothing as a 29 y/o. Wore a crop top with long flow-y sleeves out the other night and felt fantastic

I went from leather jacket and tight jeans in my teens to ... uuh, whatever didn't smell too bad in university (don't judge me, I was also working on a horse farm while doing my degree)... to "office casual: cowboy boot edition" in my 20s and 30s till I lost that job, now my "style" has been whatever's comfiest in the house (usually PJ pants or yoga pants), stuffed under cargo pants when I have to run off and fix broken things at work, and I'd copied a really comfy short sleeved tunic shirt and also a really comfy sweatshirt a few times. But since the plague, I started getting more into historical sewing so now my "being comfy around the house" clothing includes a couple flannel house dresses I made in medieval rectangle and gores style, another one in linen, and a couple more versions of the sweatshirt and tunic, a super warm plaid wool skirt and a house coat made of that same wool plaid, and I wear all these things out of the house on occasion. Not sure if my style has changed or continue to have none but I want to actually wear comfy stuff I've made. Also made a Kefta based on Sewstine's pattern and turned it into a full winter coat, it's just a bit stiff around the collar when I sit in the car :)

Nice to see the Shouty Shepard again! There's a really cool video on YT:. Living together in the Ottoman Empire filmed in 1910. The 1st scene is the village weaver in Masadonia. I loved seeing all the folk costumes of the different people of the Empire.

I'm 18, dressed emo (all black, chains, bla blah) from when I was 10 to 16 and last year I completely changed and I mostly wear bright colors now, you won't find me without wearing colorful floral print somewhere these days lol so you're not the only one! (I became a happier person after puberty too, made me want to look more cheerful)

Don’t worry! Changing styles is fun and part of life! I’m 36, in my teens I wore retro clothes to school, wigs, hot pink eye shadow and bell bottoms! In high school that continued but I started wearing bright muscle shirts under dress jackets with pin skirts that I safety pinned bells under, I worked in a factory and mohawked my hair, spiked it, work t shirts that were inflammatory to express myself, hired on a railroad and it’s jeans and t shirts and I like more classy dressy outfits outside of work, LOVE wrap skirts(saris) with shawls and tons of jewelry… don’t feel weird, it’s natural🤗

Went from men's graphic tees with jeans to pinafores and cottage core dresses. Hair went from shaved sides undercut to 1930's curled, all in a year or so! Whatever part of your style you want to hang on to, change, drop, whatever, you are still you. Though, I am in favor of still rocking the folkwear (aspiring folk-bounding here so I am biased). Your videos always bring a smile to my face, no matter how much time in between uploads. Glad to see you doing well.
