It's a very upbeat song but there's something very moving about the journey it's describing underneath, and I think that if you start by slowing it down it could be a beautiful epic. This feels like the song was given the Frozen touch. Epic. Makes me wonder if they would ever try to put a spin on this movie with this song and animation. [Story Theory 👉]
Story Theory:
The story would begin with the introduction of their folklore. Specifically, folklore spirits that govern their lands and the realm they reside in. Retelling the world from the perspective of the folklore spirits. The story of how they met their Pocahontas and John Smith.
It would begin with Governor Ratcliffe, who pushes the Powhatan out of the land. To mine for riches and power. Leading the English to disturb the sacred land that connects spirits and souls. Agitating the folklore spirits, leading them restless. Releasing their power and dividing the lands. Transforming it based on each of their folklore.
Pocahontas is tasked to face them to restore the land she calls home, despite its flaws. Meeting her version of John Smith, an English explorer caught in the middle of this situation.
After each spirit is put to rest, she and John begin to question if what she is doing is right. This leads Ratcliffe to appear, deciding that Pocahontas and John Smith have outlived their usefulness. He used a mysterious crystal he stole from the sacred land as a way to force the spirits to go after Pocahontas and the Powhatan. Determined that only the privileged (referring to himself) deserve true power and the land that they reside in. Wanting to become a ruler, seeing the folklore spirits as mere pawns and not protectors of the lands they resided in. As he saw they too outlived their usefulness.
So, in retaliation, Pocahontas and John Smith release the spirits once more. Leading to the song we hear.
Where the spirits instead protect them from Ratcliffe and manage to destroy the crystal. Tired that souls like Ratcliffe will poison their realm for generations. They take Ratcliffe to prevent his machination. As well as other supporting members of his. Never to be seen again. The land begins to heal. Leading Pocahontas and John Smith to start their lives together. Hoping to find a better future for both their people. Ending their story.
The scene shifts outside, where it is revealed that the folklore spirits are writing the current book of Pocahontas. Meaning that the events, the people, and the world within the story have been past souls recreated. Trying to give Pocahontas and the people she is connected to a way for them to heal and move on. Unlike Ratcliffe, he was a soul that never wanted to move on. Stuck to greed and power.
With each spirit satisfied with how the new iteration turned out. They closed the book. Knowing this version of Pocahontas and the world they created will be all right. Leading to the credits.
This would be a nice way for a movie like Pocahontas to exist. A reality dealing with folklore and an afterlife. One that tries to find meaning and closure for characters set within Disney lore or in history books. Retelling their souls so they can find a form of peace. Giving themselves a new start.
As animation is a form of ideas we create within a reality that goes beyond our imagination. Especially how fact and fiction are often blurred with one another.
Put a lot of thought into it. Just theories to consider. Despite a long conversation. Thanks to anyone who reads this.
