The Babe really didn't invent the Home Run. It existed before he started playing professionally, however he did popularize it. There were quite a few times in Ruth's career that he had a higher HR totals than whole teams did.
The reason he invented it was because no one tried for home runs they went for singles and moving the runners-up, if someone hit a homerun back then it was seen as a mistake on the hitter
@Jaime de Espana not clearing the bases is a mistake but hitting high fly balls was considered a mistake, before Ruth people would try for singles the ideal hit was a considered line Drive..... Then Ruth came with an uppercut type swing that would launch the ball over the field is heads consistently. most players back then couldn't do that consistently therefore it was a mistake

Boston used to have two teams. Now it's just the Red Sox who play in the American League (AL) The National League Team later moved to Milwaukee and became the Milwaukee Braves and then later moved to Atlanta and became the modern Atlanta Braves. They are a historic franchise with legends like Hank Aaron, Eddie Matthews, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Chipper Jones. Babe Ruth played for the Braves at the Very End of his career and not for long. New York Yankees are Babe Ruths team. Lots of teams in baseball have moved over time. Many reasons for this including the sport predating the invention of the airplane and new markets opening up out west. Lots of cities used to have two teams that don't anymore. The current cities with two teams are New York (Yankees and Mets), Chicago (Cubs and White Soxs) and L.A. (Dodgers and Angels). Philadelphia used to have two teams but the A's moved to Oakland Cali so now its just the Philadelphia Phillies. St. Louis used to have two teams but the St. Louis Browns who were the original Milwaukee Brewers before the Braves moved to Milwaukee to replace them. This team later became the modern Baltimore Orioles. The Seattle Pilots team moved to Milwaukee and went back to the original Brewers name this is the modern Milwaukee Brewers. New York used to have 3 teams but the two National League teams moved West. the Dodgers moved to LA and the Giants moved to San Francisco so it left just the Yankees. Later the Mets were added to give NY a National League team to replace them. Washington DC had two teams named the Senators that moved. One is the modern Texas Rangers and one is the modern Minnesota Twins. The Modern Washington Nationals was originally the Montreal Expos who moved to DC. I'm sure there are a couple more team moves I'm missing too.
Babe Ruth definitely changed the game in so many ways. More than anyone else ever, before or since. He was such a natural at every position. Career Statistics Batting average: .342. Home runs: 714. Hits: 2,873. RBI: 2,213. Pitching W/L record: 94-46. ERA: 2.28. Top Ten in MLB history in the following categories: 3rd on home run list - 714. 10th in batting average - .342. 2nd on RBI list - 2,213. 1st on all-time slugging % - .690. 2nd on all-time on-base % - .474.
The movie "The Babe" starring John Goodman is a pretty good movie, but not great. The last spoken line of the movie pretty much sums it up. A fan says to Ruth after his last game "You are the best. You are the best there's ever been." I think that is probably still true of the legend.
The 1927 Yankees. Known as Murderer's Row. What they are talking about him inventing the Home Run, is he made it mainstream sensation. It was as popular to hit Home Runs until he came along. He was a great Pitcher.
Babe Ruth broke the record for most home runs in a major league career at age 26 and proceeded from that point forward to break the record more than 500 more times over the rest of his career. His home run record of 714 home runs in a career stood from 1935 to 1974. And his teams only played 148 games per year instead of 162. It still took 40 years for someone to best his record. That's how important he was to the game. Only 9 players have hit more than 600 home runs in a career since 1876 when Major League Baseball was formed. And only 3 players have hit more than 700 home runs, and one of them (Barry Bonds) used steriods to do it. To this day the two great giants of the home run world are still Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron (the man who broke Babe's record in 1974). But unlike Babe, Hank was a black player and played against black and white players. Babe's entire career took place before baseball integrated black players. That wasn't his fault, of course, but it does mean he never had to hit against Satchel Paige or other great black pitchers. Nonetheless, Babe is still a legend because he was the first greatest player and because of him baseball became the national pastime.
Allure, Boston Red Sox is one of the original baseball team since 1901 and continues today. Boston Braves started in 1871 then Braves went Milwaukee then one and last city & current home in Atlanta as Atlanta Braves.
He popularized the home run, it already existed but it wasn't something that ball players didn't actively sought for. Babe actively intended to knock baseballs out the park. And it created the most awarding stat in baseball.
He didn't invent the home run, but he was the first guy to hit home runs consistently. The original record before Babe Ruth was like 19 or 20 and he doubled it in the early 20s.
The only criticism that I can come up with regarding the babe is that he didn’t play in an integrated league. Other than that he was an icon who saved baseball after the black sox scandal. He also played some of his career before the live ball era. He was an all time great pitcher and hitter, no one else can really say that, not to mention that he is as imbedded in American culture as anyone. When they asked him why he earned more money than the president, he was like I had a better year. Him giving his farewell speech at the house that Ruth built is as moving as a scene that I can ever remember seeing.
Ok, Babe Ruth did not event the home run. But before 1920 the home run was very rare due to various factors (huge ball parks, dead baseballs, and baseball strategy). Ruth was the first modern home run hitter. He was the first to make the home run a major offensive weapon.
Babe Ruths HR totals are more impressive than modern totals too. Although Babe played against Black players in the Barnstorming games and things of that nature those games aren't official MLB games and don't count towards his records. Thus alot of people biased towards modern players try to denigrate Babe Ruth by saying the league wasn't integrated. However things were actually alot tougher on the players of that era. Specifically tougher on the hitters. For example most of the stadiums were Much Larger dimensions. Meaning the fences were much further as much as 100 feet further away from home plate in some sports. Another thing is the pitching mound was raised higher giving the pitchers an advantage. This was lowered to the modern level in the 1960s because offense was lagging behind pitching. Baseball went from Ted Williams in the 1940s who batter .406 to Carl Yazstremski leading the league in Batting Average at .301 and they decided to lower the mound making it slightly easier for hitters. Things like this are often overlooked by modern fans when they don't want to acknowledge the history and the great achievements of the legends of the game. Same thing happens to legends in other sports. Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Jim Brown, etc.
Boston had two teams. The Braves eventually moved to Atlanta. At the time NY had 3 teams. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to LA and the NY Giants (not to be confused with the NY Football Giants who actually play in NJ) moved to SF. The Mets were an expansion team.
A home run was different then. You had to actually hit it out of the stadium. The yellow line didn't exist. Most of today's home runs would be ground rule doubles back then. If the bar was never lowered, he'd still have the home run record!
Boston HAD 2 teams until 1952. In 1953 the Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee. Then in 1966 the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta and became the current Atlanta Braves.
And in 1970, after 1 season, the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee and became the Brewers. And they hired Bob Uecker to be the radio broadcaster for the Brewers.
I don't know if you have looked in on another linebacker like (LT) but there was a player (DT) and his name was Derrick Thomas of the kansas city chiefs check him out because if he didn't die he would have by far had just about every record there was for a defensive player
Babe had an interesting life, he had a big heart for kids because he grew up in an orphanage He was an amazing pitcher which is also often overlooked. Babe would sometimes eat as many as 12 hot-dogs during a game.Yankee Stadium was called the house that Ruth built Legend.
Only 19, the law at the time stated that Ruth had to have a legal guardian sign his baseball contract in order for him to play professionally. As a result, Jack Dunn became Ruth's legal guardian, leading teammates to jokingly call Ruth "Dunn's new babe." The joke stuck, and Ruth quickly earned the nickname "Babe" Ruth
Ruth is a legend for sure. He also competed before the color barrier was broken by Jackie Robinson. The greatest ballplayer of all time is arguably Ty Cobb. He wanted to prove he was the best and set out to do so. He was the first class to be elected to the Hall of Fame when it opened. The reality vs the Myth of Cobb is truley fascinating. Most people still think he was a racist due to stories told by people looking to capitalize off selling their story. His only real crime was playing the game harder then everyone else. Even when he died a rich man a majority of his money went to charity.
@TideFan01 Right. The problem is pointing out a good video or highlight for a review. I guess for the most part the videos on RUclips show that he was most likely made out to be a monster because they weren't as good as him. That movie COBB with Tommy Lee Jones is entertaining but everyone knows Al Stump sold a bunch of lies.
you asked how he got the name Babe. when the manager/owner of the minor league orioles wanted to sign him, the manager was forced to legally adopt him in order to get him out of st. mary's. this fact made his teammates and others call him the babe.
Oh yes and Rickey Henderson said he was the greatest baseball player ever because all he did was run from 1st to 2nd a hundred times. My favorite moment is when a damn near 50 year old Nolan Ryan struck that cocky "you know what word" out
Truth is back then, non-white people were segregated from baseball. It's reasonable to suspect that he may well have had some tougher competition, and faced better pitchers if the league had just taken the best players regardless of their skin color. That wasn't his fault but it's an important point. Really highlights how much society has changed and how important it is to focus on the ability of the individual and to try and get passed the group identity stuff.
Love to see more baseball. If you're looking for Yankees, you can go back and do the legends; Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson.... or you can keep it current and do Derek Jeter. One of the most polarizing figures in modern baseball. It'll getcha clicks. lol Because his fans are devoted almost as much as his haters are to hating him. Mainly because he's the most statistically boring star in baseball history, and playing for the Yankees puts a spotlight on you, and those that hate the Yankees think it makes him overrated. He didn't do it with monster home runs, he did it by leaving his heart on the field every inning. Those that love him call him Captain Clutch. Those that hate him call him Captain Intangibles. But in the end not a lot of players have 3,000 career hits (he had 200 hits 3 seasons in a row. Twice!), 5 World Series rings, won a world series game with a home run, and a ton of defensive highlight material putting his body on the line (except diving to the left... he doesn't do left lol). The legends aren't always flashy. Sometimes they just play the game how it's supposed to be played. And win.
Reggie Jackson was a more modern day Babe Ruth and was also a Yankee and he broke Babe Ruth's record for most strikeouts and he had a candy bar named after him unlike the Babe and he hit a home run once that is one of the hardest hit ever and he almost got into a fight w his manager on television and his nickname is Mr October because he was amazing in the playoffs and World Series .
