  • FYI: I don't own stock in Rippling and they didn't pay me to make this video. No money changed hands. This is one of the greatest comeback stories in Silicon Valley history and I was excited to be able to tell it here on the channel after meeting at a CEO summit earlier this year. We both have a connection to Founders Fund (I'm an entrepreneur in residence there and Parker raised money from Founders Fund a few years ago).

    ABOUT JOHN COOGAN:
I am an entrepreneur-in-residence at Founders fund and the co-founder of soylent.com and lucy.co, both of which were funded by Y Combinator (Summer 2012 and Winter 2018).
I've been an entrepreneur for the last decade across multiple companies. I've done a lot of work in Silicon Valley, so that's mostly what I talk about. I've raised over 10 rounds of venture capital totaling over $100m in funding.
I work mostly in tech-enabled consumer packaged goods, meaning I use software to make the best products possible

A video on the company Zynga would make a fun and interesting video. Back in the heyday of Facebook games it made a lot of games that people loved to play like Farmville. I believe that making a video on the company and the impact it had on Facebook games would be a great nostalgic video for your viewers, that is if they had a Facebook account, of course, which we both know that over 90% of your audience have had one before and have mostly likely played a Facebook/Zynga game before.

It rubs me the wrong way some founders are glorified. This dude built the same company twice, boasted about getting 120m ARR in 4 months, yet they still relied on 1 bank, single point of failure. They they need to resort to hastily rising 500m and furiously hack for 10 days to make payroll. For a company that should be great with numbers they were pretty loose with risk aversion. You would expect from companies throwing 100m around to have a backup plans, crisis scenarios worked out but instead you get a video swooning over bad business practices. What Rippling did was knowingly putting their own customers in danger of the whole system failing... by relying entrilely on one bank up until that late point of their existence.

I really appreciated this piece. This channel is very monolithic in the sense that it focuses a lot on the journeys of white male entrepreneurs and their fundraising efforts. I watch because as a black female business owner this is one of the only “spaces” that I get to hear these conversations in full detail. Also as a business owner I wish I could identify as a white man so it can finally stop being so damn hard (but that’s another story for another time). This piece wasn’t the typical story - he has the same typical pedigree but somehow he manages to put people 1st 🥇 despite having to rebuild and start over. I enjoyed watching this - thank you.

He's gotta watch his weight. He's ballooned to nearly obese. Hope he doesn't have an underlying health issue causing that. As for comebacks, well, that's kind of the norm in SV. Fail often until you succeed. I feel sorry he ran afoul of the government, but that's also common, as it is said every CEO is probably violating the law every day they work (Amazon probably is breaking the Robinson-Patman act every day for example, though they have carveouts). As for restarting, surprised the previous company didn't have a non-compete agreement; probably they were unsophisticated.
