The sharp blade is produced in two slightly different versions - this version is diamond-sectioned throughout but fullered for about one third of its length. Wheel-type pommels are sized to provide a grip for the second hand when required, and the straight tapering cross provides excellent hand protection”

    Well done sir, as always. And dude, I think that at this point, you do qualify as an expert when it comes to modern production swords. I'm sure plenty of others will agree. You've seen quite a few more than the average consumer of sword and sword products....

      I agree with Eric. You are very knowledgeable about the nuances of modern recreations and are someone I would consider an expert; at least for the casual sword collector.
      I do also greatly appreciate how humble and straight forward you are in every single video about your background.
      Thanks for so many informative videos!

      Glad you like them. I give a bit of a disclaimer in the beginning of each video because most videos do not get viewed by subscribers. I would imagine hearing the same thing over and over again in each of my videos is not fun. I don't particularly like repeating it but it seems important for a first time viewer.

    The loose fit in the scabbard might be the result of the previous owner filing out the mouth. The Stock scabbard has the ugly tendency to dull the blade when drawing and sheeting. So most owners give the blade more room to move past the metal.
    I personally will probably leave the first two inches of the blade dull as well for control purposes. Many swordsmen will put their index finger over the guard for more control.

    Now I want one dammit! I think we do trust your opinion by now and at that price point it’s hard not to find this sword a little alluring although, I’m mostly a Katana type of cat.Thanks for the review. It’s always a pleasure to see a new video from you.

    pretty sure this can't be the dull version that has been resharpened The dull version has a significantly longer fuller and it is much more whippy so that it can be safe for training purposes.

    Looking at the point, I'd think that was a sharpened version from the start. I had one from years ago, it wasnt sharpened to the guard. As far as being sharpened all the way to the hilt, I think it's really more of an issue with modern production methods than any real historical influence. Were some swords sharp to the guard? Maybe, probably, we're humans we do all kinds of stuff and I'm not going to say it never existed. But I will say that there's little reason to sharpen a european sword all the way to the guard since the lower half of the blade is used in defensive actions in most longsword techniques I've seen. It makes sense to leave the part of the sword that's gonna be taking hits from other blades somewhat dull to extend the life of the weapon. Most of the long swords I've had. All of them with the exception of my first, a cold steel hand and a half from 12 years ago. I believe had a dull ricasso that extends between 3-6in up from the guard.

    @15:55 ... no offense here, you seem way more knowledgeble than myself, but... an observation re the cutting, I've had the same problem, it may have to do with where on the blade you are hitting, often my cuts are also too far forward towards the tip where the blade is thinner. That said I understand cutting in garage there is less room! That's not to say the edge may not also need work, I had a tinker longsword and the edge wasn't great, at first...

  • @mysticmarbles
    @mysticmarbles 3 года назад

    For what it's worth this sword cuts really well once it's sharpened properly. I have customized several of these blades and it's not too much work make the factory edge scary sharp. Just don't get the sharpening service from KoA or they put a bad secondary bevel on it. It looks like that's what the original owner did and then probably dulled it some more with cutting.

      Do you recommend this one over the Tinker longsword? How should I get it sharpened if not by koa?

    • @mysticmarbles

      Joshua Harris For backyard cutting the bastard sword packs a slightly more powerful punch at the expense of range. Very minimal difference though. I like both. The best way to get your swords sharp is to learn to sharpen them yourself. Barring that you can hire someone on sword buyers guide forums or various sword groups on Facebook. It gets very expensive the more you cut with your swords so doing it yourself is better in the long run. Mike Edelson has a good video on how to do it with a $50 belt sander.

      Depends really. Good thing about bastard swords is they can be used with one or two hands with ease. The longsword has the advantage of length for HEMA practice if you get the dull one

      The long sword handles really well and the finish is very attractive. The edge as with almost all hanwei blades will require a touch up on the edge when ya get it.

    Man unfortunately hanwei has fallen off on their quality of work . ever since paul chen died , its like they got more careless in their work . and also hanwei is very over priced on their practical line of katanas . I do like the practical plus elite katana but I cant pay 350 for that sword , especially when I can get a custom made katana from sino sword or swords of northshire thats much better put together for the price . I dont know anything about their tinker bastard sword because im not into the european style of swords . Im a katana fan 100% ! Thats my all time favorite weapon . but you do good reviews on all the swords that you talk about .

    Mathew the sword is a pile of garbage that will fall to bits with heavy use, none of the "fittings" are hot worked onto the sword. The guard will rattle over time before becoming unusable with any vigorous HEMA training.
    Please don't promote these garbage construction method swords, in case a HEMA student actually thinks it's worth his hard earned money. Anything that doesn't have a hot worked guard and peened pommel isn;t worth buying. Why do you think 95% of original antiques found in the dirt are still intact, with their crossguards and pommels still on the tangs, even after the wood and leather handles have degraded into dust over 600 years, the hot worked hilt construction remains intact.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  5 лет назад +1

      That is good info. What would you recommend? I don't study HEMA though I have seen a few schools practice. The HW Tinker swords would not hold up like a well made feder but I did not think that was the point. Plenty of modern made swords are fixed on with a hex nut and perform well in handling and cutting. It will loosen over time but generally the option to tighten is available in most modern contexts.

    • @londiniumarmoury7037
      @londiniumarmoury7037 5 лет назад +1

      @@Matthew_Jensen I have seen video footage from HEMA schools of the Tinker sword actually breaking during sparring. It broke vs a Peter Regenyei Feder, and snapped in half live on camera. I would recommend anything from Kvetun Armoury, Regenyei, Fabri Armorum, Danelli, Castille Armoury, Albion and a few others.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  5 лет назад

      Given that blunt versions are made, I would expect some level of sparing to be appropriate. That said, it is not built like a feder or at least not any feder I have seen. Then tend to be much more robust. Do you think this blade is being sold as an equivalent to a feder?

    • @londiniumarmoury7037
      @londiniumarmoury7037 4 года назад

      @Tomi Lakkinen The tinker longsword isn't cheaper than a solid Feder, it's got nothing to do with sword snobbery, it's got to do with safe training tools that are built properly. You can buy better quality training swords that are cheaper than the Tinker Longsword.

    • @londiniumarmoury7037
      @londiniumarmoury7037 4 года назад

      @Tomi Lakkinen I don't think the sharp and blunt version have different construction, just one has a live blade and one has a blunt blade, if yours has held up that's good but I'm just informing people that this sword has failed on other HEMA practitioners during sparring, and some clubs and practitioners might want to take that into consideration when buying gear. If they have fixed any quality control issues that's good. All I did was report an issue that HEMA practitioner sin Europe have noticed with this sword,.
