  • Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe Carpet Cleaner
    Model: FH50150
    Seized scrub brushes stopped spinning due to rusted motor shaft.
    This is a very common issue with air type motors, as the air & moisture mix to cause the shaft to rust. Models with a sealed separate electric motor tend not to have this issue as frequently. A replacement air type motor for this model is generally $25.
    This model is often sold at stores like Kohls, Walmart, Target, etc.

    Good instructions. I would add to clean everything and soak the bearings in Liquid Wrench for a few hours, dry, and apply a liberal coat of water proof grease. These are sealed bearings, sealed against dust and dirt, not water. On the gear teeth and shafts I use lithium grease. Run reassembled for 5-10 min to work the grease in so the brushes spin with some torque. The bearing on the end of the shaft is easy to replace ($9 for 10 on Amazon). The one behind the power fan is much more difficult, so be careful when pushing the shaft out of the housing. You may want to soak the shaft in Liquid Wrench over night. Replacing both will make the drive ‘like new’ otherwise you risk bearing seizure again.

    This is great except for these items:
    The huge text sometimes obscures what the hand is doing, and without sound, I had to re-watch a few times . . . not a serious problem.
    The bearing doesn't just come off; it is pressed on the shaft, and would have to be carefully pried off. In my case, it was frozen/corroded to the shaft so I could not get the transition gear off.
    Otherwise, the instruction was well done. I found all the screws easily, and will have no problem reassembling the machine, but I may have to buy a new motor assembly. I'm still working on cleaning and freeing up the drive shaft. We shall see.

      The huge text was intentional, and when laying out the video, I tried to make sure most of the important items could be viewed. The large text was so someone could run the slider back and forth and see what step they need to easily track to. The original video actually did have my recorded audio. However, there was a lot of ambient noise and the video was actually about 10 minutes longer. By removing the vocals, I was able to trim 10 minutes off the length, and it wasn't as distracting with ambient audio. I did not have appropriate equipment to create a over dub of the instructions.
      If the bearing is seized completely, to where the shaft cannot move, the assembly should be replaced. The new assembly should be opened carefully and greased thoroughly before installation.

    Before going through the trouble of disassembly, check the docking seal, and the matching hole on the bottom of the recovery tank, to make sure it did not become dislodged, or is dirty with lint, the end of your cat's tail, or other foreign matter. Clean and apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the seal with a Q-tip.
    When iserting the recovery tank, make certain that the toes on the back of the tank are hooked into the slots before clamping, or you will have very little suction, and the brushes will not turn. Also, the brushes will not turn, and there is little suction with the handle in the upright position, as the air gate is closed. The handle must first be lowered onto a chair seat, or held by another person, with the front raised, and the power turned on. You should then be able to feel the brushes turning. Try not to chew your fingers up by feeling the bruses turn.

    The turbine assembly is very cheaply made, and I'm sure hoover knows about the problem but refuses to spend the money to fix it. The metal gear and bearings should be stainless. It's the only way to fix this problem. I'll never buy a hoover carpet cleaner again because of this negligence. The fix I'm going to try is globbing the gear and bearing up with grease, and then letting the brushes spin for a few minutes after each use to make sure everything is nice and dry inside. I hate this sort of thing... one cheap part makes the entire product garbage.

    • @Doramius
      @Doramius  7 лет назад +5

      Agreed. they could have also done a better job of lubricating the bearing. I was using Singer machine oil, and that helped for quite a while. Another unit I repaired, I had used lithium grease, and it has not seized up since, after nearly 2 years of sporadic use. I think Lithium grease is the best product to use. Knowing this, I still think they should have used higher quality parts and better grease to begin with.

      I haven't had to deal with the power assembly on this unit. There's 3x screws on the bottom for the power cord, but I have not had to make any changes or replace the cord on these, yet. Be very cautious and understand that and modifications you do to the power assembly are at your own risk.

    +Doramius Just what I needed to get my Hoover FH50150 brushes freed up and running again. I made sure to clean the lint filter in the air passage and there are bearings above and below the helical gear shaft on my shampooer. The lower bearing was pretty easy to get going again (I used WD-40). The upper bearing was completely seized and I had to capture the inner race between 2 nuts on a 1/4-20 screw and grab the outer race with pliers to break it free. Although it's freed up, I'm sure it'll seize up again soon because the shaft and bearings should be stainless. I did make sure that you can actually back-drive the air motor with the brushes when things are freed up.

    • @Doramius
      @Doramius  6 лет назад +4

      So far using lithium grease has been the best at preventing seizing of the brushes. This is a very inexpensive unit, and actually very good for the price. Unless you're wholly concerned about the warranty, opening the unit up and using lithium grease on the bearing and motor shaft is not a bad option as a preventative option. The risk is completely yours, but IMO worth it.

    • @Doramius
      @Doramius  Год назад

      Before trying to remove the bearing, you may want to use something to dissolve the corrosion. Just be aware the plastic holding it may be brittle. Yes, the bearing is replaceable. If you are able to get the old one out without damaging the plastic, the new one goes in nicely. You can try most corrosion solvents, but note some solvents can attack the plastic housing. Regular WD-40 or Evapo-rust are generally easy on and good with plastics.

    I'm thinking of using
    WATER RESISTANT SILICONE LUBRICANT to keep these from rusting. What do you think?

    • @Doramius
      @Doramius  5 лет назад +2

      Lithium grease is usually better for this application, since it bonds better to the metal of the bearing. The motor cover material is resistant to the lithium grease, from breaking it down. The speed at which the shaft spins in the bearing might get pretty warm from friction, which is probably why it rusts and seizes so easily) and silicone doesn't do very well with warmer temperatures, where it can wear down and lose its lubricating ability. You can try it on your own and post results, as I'm sure it will work initially, but lithium grease is recommended.

      Someone recently showed me where they submerged a completely rusted seized motor, with the removed gears, in white vinegar for about 24-48 hours (replacing the vinegar every 8-10 hours). They used a stiff bristled brush to scrub the shaft occasionally. They carefully dried it off, made sure the shaft moved freely, and then applied the WD40 White lithium grease. So possibly a new technique for those severely rusted shafts to try one last ditch effort to see if you can get them back into working shape.

      @@Doramius maybe. I didn't want to break it off. I'm not sure if it is supposed to come off since it's not shown in the video.

      If you look at the placing of the gears back, and the testing of the motion, it should give a better look at the assembly. The white cover just holds the gears in place.

    I just bought one. Can you give me preventive advice?

      If it is used regularly, the brushes tend not to seize up so easily. If it hasn't been used in a month, you can try manually turning the brushes, by hand, to break up any light rusting. If you feel comfortable opening the unit, you can follow the video and when you open the motor, you can apply lithium grease to the bearing and shaft to help prevent rusting. Lithium grease can be found at Walmart, Target, most auto stores, and I've seen several grocery stores sell it. It is very inexpensive. WD40 even makes a Lithium grease. You can use regular WD40 in a pinch, but lithium grease seems to work for a more extensive period, without re-application. Using regular WD40, I've had to re-apply every 3-6 months. Using lithium grease, I'm coming on 20 months without requiring a re-application.

      Doramius Thank you so much. Besides this obvious flaw. Does it clean carpet pretty good? Got it for 80$ on Amazon so hope it's worth the money.

      Overall, it's not a bad design. The function is actually pretty good for cleaning and does very well. $80 is quite a bargain and well worth it. Depending on the level of carpet soiling, you can dilute more or less the amount of detergent used. For extra soiled areas, in wash mode with less diluted solution, make a few more passes back and forth generously spraying the carpet, making sure to get the scrubbers over the desired area. When Rinsing, you may need to empty the waste and refill the clean water quite a few times. These brushes are some of the easiest to clean hair and pet fur from. Most of the time, the cleaning solution works great to remove pet and other smells, but after washing and a light rinse, lightly shake baking soda over the lightly damp carpet. Wait 15-20 minutes, and then rinse completely.

      Thank you for showing detail of the disassembly process. i was finally able to get the brushes spinning again but it turned out the fan blades were stuck, not the motor shaft. Great video!
