I was asked why I don’t have Uber or Lyft signs in my SUV. My answer was” I don’t advertise for free for no one” people don’t need to know who I work for. They have the name and my plate. You want your name on my ride? Pay me for advertising.

EXACTLY! I could have written the same comment except for the SUV part. haha. Yeah, I don't get the drivers who stick all the logos in their windows If we accepted hailed rides, like a taxi, it would make sense. But we don't. And as you said, I don't advertise anybody's business for free. So I have one tag that I put on the dashboard when I am picking someone up just so they'll know I'm their Uber, and I take it down the moment it's no longer necessary.
I used to have the sticker on the windshield but i got tired of getting new ones after every new windshield so i only have it at the back and tbh it reduced the times i get pulled over... but i do get what you mean tho we should get paid more for advertising
You do realize certain states by law make you have it on? You also realize the reasoning is for passenger safety? You do care for your riders?
Been a driver for 8 years 19K trips. No problem with it. But I also drive like I got some sense. Remember riders will report u way quicker than the beacon.

I do think Uber and Lyft both track our driving behaviour thru the app. I get "Smooth Cruiser" reports weekly from Lyft

I'm considering removing the stickers, except my airport will fine you if you try to pickup without the decals apparently. They make you enter the commercial area.
Only The special license for Airport pick up not in windshield. No sir they cab ask and I show the inspector no decals on my car period Uber Lyft don't pay enough for me to advertise them .

I bought a new car. Salesman says take it off when you bring it in for service. Mechanics treat it differently
They already collect all that data through your phone and app. They don't need the Uber beacon to do it. Also your dashcam footage can be used for evidence. As long as you are driving as you should and obeying traffic laws and are not found at fault if something happens it will be fine.

They are collecting your data, that's different, in my case (I don't do uber anymore), I can control what data I share with uber from my phone but you cannot mess up with beacon setting
No one likes to be monitored, and no one drives perfectly all the time. I am not concerned about insurance rates increases due to my driving behavior. I was participating in All-State insurance drivewise program. All-State was refunding me so much money, they kicked me off the program. I cannot sign back on for nothing and have been trying for over a year

The Uber app already collects most of that data anyway. That’s what their “Weekly Driver Insights” is all about. It tells you how many times they caught you speeding, how many harsh brakings you made, and God knows what else. There’s no privacy anymore, so I don’t see the trouble this beacon can cause me.
That said, I can’t get my beacon to work anyway. I’ve gone round and round with Uber Support and nothing they’ve suggested has worked. I can plug my device in. Mount it on my front windshield, go to my account settings, and there is NOTHING there about pairing my app and my beacon. I’ve deleted my app and reinstalled it, signed out and signed in again, gone to my account screen and still, nothing there about a beacon. 🤷♂️
The Uber app tracks your speed. They will show you on your dashboard how often you have been speeding.
I've received a warning in the app. "Your recent driving data shows that..." bla bla bla. It's inevitable sometimes, I drive safe & smart. Period
for all the naysayers, i think the key thing to consider here is that the data your phone collects while the app is running is both under your control (on its face) and is also gatekept by subpoenas in the case of a serious legal action. this means uber would have to pursue access to your phone data or telemetry if they wanted to reference it. the data gathered by their own beacon device is persistent, always under uber's ownership, and cannot be measured or revoked by the driver, and is likely higher in fidelity than what they are able to measure from the android or ios APIs.
Yes that app does track your speed “if” you allow it. You car switch it off. Go to Account then to app settings. You’ll see speed limit. Switch it off by sliding it left. You have to do this every time you log back in.

No mic inside of the beacon, but they can listen to you through the app. They just give you an option now to do so.
Thank you for this information it figures they would try to do something like that. It makes perfect sense so mine will be at the bottom of a drawer somewhere or Lake.
Nothing new here, the app is already doing driving behavior telemetrics. Just drive safe and avoid problems alltogether.
That was my thought this whole video, i was thinking the app on my phone already probably does exactly the same and more.

Everything is tracked through your phone. If they want you, they can find you. I get notices about me speeding all the time. i do not have the beacon set up, just my phone. I was going to put this on my dash, but first i googled some reviews. You always have some good information. However, you know and most of us already know, the phone app does the same thing if you are on the app, or any app for that matter. Cheers and keep up the good work.
Wondering now about the tablet that Uber sent me? The minute I go online, I immediately get a message saying that it’s not turned on or not working. Even when it IS turned on and working. I get a payment of approximately 2 dollars a week for having it. Does it also have tracking devices, etc? I might just send it back.

I think this thing would have helped me when i was doing Uber Eats 2 yrs ago when a drunk driver hit me and it was his fault. Could have used that data.

Your phone already does that, in fact the Lyft app can even detect if your phone is on the mount. You tell me how sensitive that is.
Have you notice how the app knows where the car is as it comes to you.
The phone has most of these sensors, I turned off that "motion" access in settings (Uber) but they will know your speed for sure.

Have you seen the new authorization for background check on the platform? It wants to pull any kind of report on you (not just normal Background Check) in perpetuity anytime they want, and share all data with whoever they want to give to. It requests your signature.

I know Uber listens in on what the passenger and driver are talking about. Because i got a message in the app from uber after we were both putting down uber for it ever shady tactics. The message said not to discus uber with a third party (customer) because they might take the info and use it to commiit fraud. Lol
I had no idea this was even out! Nobody in UBER has ever offered this device to me. Do drivers pay for these? If I had one, the first thing I'd do is take it apart and remove that device. They don't need track all that shit. I just need it to lite up the sign. Truthfully though, I have my own custom one I had an Engineer make for me and it's small and just adheres to the window and has a nice blue glow to it. It's subtle and effective. Don't need anything else.

Yes it does and with far more technology packed into it with accelerometer, gps, etc. They already have all your data.
Read article that explains why the Uber beacon was really created back in 2016 under the guise of passenger safety. The device collects a lot more data through its multiple internal sensors than just displaying a pretty glowing light for easy passenger pickup.
I have had one for over 3 months. I'm not worried because I don't speed. Still not good though.
Mine is still new in the box and I imagine it will stay there till it becomes a collectible lol.
All you need to do is look at what happens when people install contraptions or apps like this to save money on auto insurance.
Before you can blink, your rates go up because you brake too hard, drive too fast, turn too sharply, drive too many miles and use your phone too much.
Ask yourself, has Uber done anything that would make you want to invite them into your car so they can observe where you go and what you do?
Just like an insurance company, Uber will use any and all information they gather about you to screw you.
This is like testifying against yourself at your own trial. Don’t do it.

As a college kid trying to earn money to pay for my education I just don’t care. I’m very happy for apps like Uber and Lyft that give me the opportunity to make GREAT money (for a college kid) on my own time and be paid instantly. If Uber wants to track me they have a much better device called an iPhone they can already do that on. I’m happy to use this device if Uber would like me to. I feel like there are entitled drivers, and grateful ones. I’m very happy that I’m not a selfish brat bitching about a beacon you can choose to use or not.
I just got offered one and I just ordered it. It’s coming soon. I’m a great driver first of all I don’t speed. I don’t like speeding and Lyft have been giving beacons for years.
Also makes you a target for criminals, a target for police, and angry unhinged drivers can call your plate in to Uber and say you cut them off or whatever. Have to be a fool to use one.

I didn’t even know that was an Uber provided beacon and I thought it was from Amazon.
I don’t have one as I don’t even trust Alexa . Hell I don’t even use the decals unless I am driving for them other than that there’s no room in my car order stickers or devices😂😂
I received my beacon but never plugged it in because I sort of suspected it has a monitoring feature, and i do not want to be targeted by bad actors following me. Now I have a reason to throw it in the garbage

Taking mine out immediately. I am spied on enough already. UBER designs apps they are not good drivers, nor should they even try to pretend they are. The beacon is gone from my car.
Remember to unpair the beacon in the app or you will get a constant searching for gps alert.

I have one, i have used it up until i saw this video. Your def right about it being pretty, and its the authentic light that not every driver has, but that being said, yeah not so comfortable with my info being out there cause u just never know ehat could happen even when your a good driver. I woukd rather not have anything used against me that i dont have full ownership of the data. And even when we think we bave control of the data, even thats questionable

The beacon is not working against me, it’s plain not working. The stupid thing died after one day, and now sits on a shelf on my desk. Guess I got lucky.

As a Uber driver for me it’s safer without any led lights because atlis the only person that will look for your car is the person who called for Uber !! Lots of idiots out there already and you exposing your car is not safe , I’m not saying is 100 % safe !!! here in Bakersfield California it's been always 7 minutes wait times, 2 minutes and then 5 minutes, or they change it to 2 minutes and 7 minutes 🤔🤔🤔👷👷👷 , l got that message too about wait times to 7 minutes from UBER
