Agree. I do prefer gen 1. Making an analogy using Hi-fi : Gen 1 is like a vinyl and Gen 2 is a like a CD. Both are great but Gen 1 is more sensational…
Its a crap comparison, vinyl is poorer quality sound, nothing ‘great’ about it, it’s pointless, it why they invented the CD! they digitally remastered most of the older music in any case, for good reason. As for the 997’s I think the gen 2 is a nicer looking car in and out, sound wise I probably prefer gen 1, engagement wise gen 2. Driven both own a .1
@@simmo2745 interesting take on the vinyl vs cd, I honestly did not know the difference. I always believed that vinyl had a better listening experience. As for the Gen 1 vs Gen 2, I would agree that the Gen 2 is definitely the nicer in/out, however I feel that the .1 is more engaging. Curious to hear your experience of why the .2 is more engaging :)
@@simmo2745 instead of judging and being rude, you should start learning: the best source for high-end hifi is vinyl not CD just because of the compression!
Not having the luxury of large disposable income/savings, I would choose the Gen 2, much lower production numbers means rarer and should help long term value. The DFI engines and revised IMS/RMS etc means reliability will help avoid horrendous rebuild costs which must really hurt. The more modern PCM will help, but ultimately it will be about the drive, performance and ownership experience. Thanks for the video Basheer.
The 9a1 are also coming up with bore scoring, they are just younger. Some things are much harder to repair. You have all the typical DFI issues with soot on valves. It is a give and take between the two models. The IMS is of course gone but then the chain runs faster. We shall see what this means longer term. The mk1 997s are after all 15 years old.
The exhaust is an easy fix, the .2 cars feel the same other than a little extra power. Due to the lower production numbers and higher desirability they will also appreciate more 😉
@@invictusporsche I’d upgrade the steering wheel to one from a newer model 911 or Macan, replace the old stereo head unit for one with modern features such as Bluetooth and CarPlay. That would just enough to make it look so much younger than it really is.
997.2 manual is the sweet spot. Better engine (exhaust note can be improved with upgrades), same body size and steering, with better peace of mind regarding engine reliability. I don't agree with his statement that there hasn't been enough time for reliability issues to show up. It's been only one year less than the 997.1. The 9A1 engine has proven to be relatively bulletproof after the fuel pump is sorted. THAT is the main reason driving the price difference. the M96 and M97 engines are great but a small percentage end up needing very expensive repairs and it keeps people away. This can be confirmed by looking through the porsche forums. It's not the driving characteristics of the cars since they are extremely similar. To shy away from that fact in the video is silly but I appreciate the comparison video.
sharkwerks x-pipe (or similar) opens up the sound nicely (that's what I have). Some people do a full aftermarket exhaust like a Tubi or other. Those make the car much louder and more aggressive in their sound. All personal preference.
Great video buddy. I own a Seal grey base Carrera gen 1 and I will never sell it. The price difference between gen 1 and 2 is way to high in my opinion. I absolutely love my gen 1 2006 C4S. The IMS was an issue for a tiny percentage of 996?and early 05 997 but could be easily fixed with a clutch job. The 2006 and beyond had the upgraded IMS and is great. You just have to drive and maintain them. They’re not for everyone.
IMS issues happen to a very small amount of 996 and early 2005 997 models as well as Boxters. Its a manufacturing quality issue that Porsche has improved with a larger IMS bearing in the 2006 and on cars. The dot 2 don't have it all. You can fix it, when doing your clutch job.
Gen 1, manifold induction, is the better sounding motor. Gen 2's hold more value as the production numbers were quite low as the US market was imploding into the Great Recession.
True about the Gen 1 manifold induction. Interesting perspective and definitely right about the Gen 2's holding it's value due to the low numbers sold :)

'the interior has been completely revised' The only difference internally between the gen 1 and gen 2 is an updated radio/satnav console. Everything else is literally the same.
997.1 for me looks better , sounds better , more analogue feel and much easier to find with a manual transmission. The .2 looks more outdated now with the led pixel type lights and the newer now looks older updated interior when compared to the more simplified elegance of the .1 and ...PDK mainly found in the .2's although very capable I will leave for the ladies out there ..

The 997.2 is a superior car in everyway other than the factory exhaust which is an easy fix. Having driven both cars many times they do not feel any different other than the slightly higher power of the .2. The .1 feels more dated but it does not feel any more analog. The claim that the .1 is more analog is silly.
what about the IMS bearing issue ? ? is it resolved on the second generation? how long did you own it ? or currently own it? do you know price difference between the two gens?
@@christophercolumbus8944 There is no IMS in the 997.2. I've had mine for almost 5 years, and only had to replace 1 wheel bearing in that time. There's quite a bit of a gap between the two gens, but it will depend on where you are located and many other factors.
