Can't of been easy for Des Lynam to fill in the boots of Richard Whiteley for Countdown, at the same time I'm still happy that Countdown is still going strong to this very day
Richard Whiteley was a legend of this show and nobody will ever match him. Des O'Connor was another fantastic presenter, and while he was nowhere near as good as Richard, he brought his own presenting style to the show, and I thought he was great. Lynam though...let's just say I didn't watch much Countdown in 2006...
Des Lynam only did it for a year. He lived in Suffolk at the time so travelling from there to Leeds proved too much for him so quit. An offer to move 'Countdown' to London with Lynam still as host was rejected because the show's spiritual home was Leeds. Left there mind not long after Lynam's successor Des O'Connor quit to Manchester then 'Media City' Salford.
@@wrexham1983 You are quite right but the presenters that came after him weren't bad either . I would've been dissapointed if they had been the same as the great Richard Whiteley . They should be themselves.
Not an easy task to take over from the legendary Richard Whiteley. Richard was in the 'seat' for a very long time: - it was his show! I've never been a sport fan so had not seen Des Lynam on air (apart from an odd Grandstand clip here or there). Nevertheless, I think he did a great job during his time on Countdown.
Des Lynam had potential as host but his heart never seemed in it, probably for the reasons already mentioned in these comments (the long travels etc). It felt as though Carol carried most of the show during this time.
Notably this was episode 4100 as of Wednesday 10th May 2006 in that series and the original episode 3959 was back at (near the ending in Series 52) Wednesday 24th November 2004.
@DAVlDMlCHEALROBlNSON Finally and this is my last word on this.I felt Des Lynam and Carol did not get on.I remember that Des made some remark that carrots or some vegetable repeated (maybe this is on RUclips) on him.Carol tried to get him going on it for a laugh and Des just cut her off. He wasn't interested. Des introduced a sort of cut throat competitive edge to the game which in my view was totally out of place.Countdown is not the FA Cup Final. It is or was a mild easy going game for fun.
Des Lynam sounded like that he had no experience in this show and didn't look very happy; he had to travel such a long distance to present Countdown....
@supagan Lynam was a disaster. He was totally unsuited to the job. Within months of taking the job he started whingeing about the long drive up to Leeds where the show is recorded. Surely he knew this before he accepted the job. Only after he had left Countdown did he give the real reason why he quit. It had nothing to do with the long drive. Lynam admitted that he, himself, soon realized he was not the right person for the job. For that he must be admired. As for ratings, what are your sources?
Gyles Brandreth or Tom O'Connor would have been a sensible replacement for Richard Whiteley given audiences already knew them on Dictionary Corner for so long. Lynam just didn't want to there by the end.
Why did Des refer to Helen Mathieson as the reigning champion and Colin Wreford as the challenger? Am I missing something here? I seem to recall hearing that episodes were recorded with guest presenters whilst Richard was ill, which then never aired following his death. Is that what's going on here? Are they picking the game up from a point which we never got to see? Because surely a new series starts with two new contestants, doesn't it? I'm confused.
Not quite, the series has to stop when they get to the quarter finals (obviously), so the champion here was interrupted by the Series 53 quarter finals.
From Carol's autobiography they were planning to start filming with guest presenters on 27 June, presumably to get some in for being broadcast to be 4 July, but Richard passing the day before stopped that. From Richard's final link from the final of series 53 it was meant to be a Champion of Champions.
@DAVlDMlCHEALROBlNSON Now I think of it....It was cucumber sandwiches that Des said made him burp although he used the word 'repeat'. Carol tries immediately to draw Des out on what he means. Carol plays the innocent. You get the impression she wants to tease this 'repeating' cucumber sandwich thing out and milk it for all it is worth in laughs and fun. Unfortunately Des is having none of it and more or less cuts Carol off at the knees. This episode may be on RUclips.
@supagan Des is on record as saying - after the Leeds travel nonsense - that he left because he didn't fancy spending the rest of his professional life starting the clock on Countdown. I have no opinions either way as regards liking or disliking Des but I do feel he did not have the intellectual interest of Richard Whitely in the programme. There was no repartee or chit chat or even a laugh with Des. Des O'Connor was a comedian who I thought enjoyed himself. I felt Des Lynam didn't..I felt
I didn't like it when Des Lynam started presenting Countdown; at the time when I was 9 years old as I was so used to Richard Whiteley hosting it, I was wondering who that ugly looking man with the untidy mustache was, unaware that Richard Whiteley had died due to septicaemia, but I was relieved that Carol Vordaman was still on the letters and numbers, but despite this, I didn't watch Countdown much afterwards.
@@gruxxxHow is it horrible to write this Karen? If you can't take what I had thought in my childhood about this, then maybe you shouldn't have written that reply saying that it's horrible when it's not!😡
Richard Whiteley Was Better Then Carol Vorderman Then Des Lynam Then Des O Conner Then Jeff Sterling Then Susie Dent Then Rachel Riley Then Nick Hewer Then Michael Glaister On Countdown
Forgot to mention Richard Digance, who was meant to have only been stand in host for Richard Whiteley until he was well enough to return. That obviously didn't happen & I believe the shows where Richard Digance hosted it have never been broadcast on TV.
Jimmy Carr And Rachel Richard Whitely and Carol Lewis and Rachel Nick Hewer and Rachel Des O'connor and Rachel Jeff Stelling and Rachel Chris Murray and Rachel

Deal Or No Deal The New Gameshow with Noel Edmonds follows after New Countdown!
Honestly, I did like Richard Whiteley, he was a really good host, but honestly, my favourite has always been Des Lynam.
It was RW baby x

Des Lynam was the best presenter of Countdown
Also can someone find his last episode.
I would prefer Richard Whiteley but nice opinion
Des from the post-Whiteley era of course
I didn't like it when Des Lynam hosted Countdown; he sounds like that he has no experience in the show nor did he look very tidy.....
If I had to rank the hosts
Richard Whitely
Jimmy Carr
Jeff Stelling
Des O'Connor
Nick Hewer
Des Lynam
I hope you will update the list when Anne Robinson get in the host seat?
