In one of Les Stoud's first episodes of Survivorman [ maybe even the pilot episode ] his leather boot laces kept breaking , while attempting the bowdrill friction fire , so he cut off the bottom of his button-up shirt and braided it and that worked . I don't know how long Jason tried but it took Mr. Stroud over ten hours of attempts until he finally succeeded , I've never seen anyone else try so hard for so long . He also filled his hat repeatedly with water straight from one of our Canadian lakes and drank it as is ; though like Mr. Salyer implied that's probably not the smartest choice .
Less than 1 minute in and already mentioned more than most people 👍🏼 Often forgotten are navigation and comms when discussing fulfillment of needs. Good stuff as always. Also 1st aid and protection in certain circumstances.
Dang brother, this and the river trip, are two of best adventure you've done in awhile. Broke my phone so been unable to watch. But I found an old 20 year old phone just to watch on.
Not sure what one item I will choose, but a Bic lighter probably would be high on the list next to a knife. Fire seems very important. Challenging choices
An old school Swiss Army Ranger Knife, that has the Firefly mini ferro rod and tinder wad, lives in my pocket. This video makes that one tool seem like a great EDC choice.
The oven coulda been used as a drum for your signal device as well. Might have looked for vines A as a means of cordage B as a possible source of water....Very enlightning show this time.
I loved seeing this from your perspective.. I wish we could turn both videos into something.. I enjoyed this one, going out of state and making things happen.. Part II of mine is coming up next Tuesday.. We need to do something like this again!
Both videos were GREAT!!! Impressed by what you got done, tried (bet your brain was tired) & the wrap up of what did & didn’t work this time. Those FireAnts are mean. Had them in the yard when lived in South Carolina. They can kill. Started studying for my General HAM lic & watching some YT as they talk about HAM during emergencies, Wildness Protocol & levels of HAM gear away from home. The thinking is similar, but not the same, to what y’all do. So glad never had to travel the Oregon Trail. How did they do it? Keep up the excellent work
Why didn't you try a hand fire drill after the bow drill failed? I've not been successful with either method very much. I was just curious if it was a wood issue like hard wood and soft wood incompatibility? Great video and I love the idea of using something weird like a toaster oven for survival. Keep it up.
A magnifying lens has a convex surface that focuses the light from the sun onto one small spot. A flat piece of glass probably would not work. Great idea, thinking outside the box. Thanks!
First of all Jason, I don't believe in rules when it comes to survival.... games have rules... so let's see it as a game... Everybody thinks ''What should I pick to survive!''.... Jason: ''I am Survival!''.... hold my toaster!... lol [a screwdriver could give more goodies from that toaster btw...] All and all nice video! I guess your wife's right in saying ''Jason's my survival pick'' lol
Thanks for sharing your adventures! Enjoyed the harsh reality of the situation. It would be hard to sustain if one was stranded there. A for effort! 🌟👊🏻🤩🥾
I was so focused on you trying to get your friction fire going 🔥 👉 I dropped what was In my hand & it shattered into many little pieces (nothing to fret about)👀 I'm pulling for you Jason & know you’ll get the job done👌
@@ONThree no problem 👉 it's a thing, but thank you for your sweet comment! I was pulling for you Jason to get that fire started “You are resilient, creative & determined” 👉 that's why I still I’ll give a win👌
How hot would it have gotten cupping your tin foil, then putting a small amount of tinder or sap in the bottom. Then using the toaster oven glass door as a magnifying glass intensifying the sun and the reflection of the tin foil, igniting your tinder
I like the way you think!! A magnifying glass has a convex surface that focuses the sunlight onto one small spot. A flat piece of glass would not have the same effect. Love the creative thinking.
This is not the weapon, THIS ::banging on skull:: is where the weapon resides. There are resources, some can be made tools, many tools can be dangerous; But, THIS, is the only man-made (woman-made, just so we're clear) dangerous thing.
@@ONThree ya I noticed that further in the video you got a better one. I could feel the determination and then frustration with it still not working. I commend you for following through with it, I bet you learned some valuable experience. I know I was wracking my brain thinking “what would I use to make fire!” “What other methods have I learnt over the years?” Maybe a cache belt would have saved you in that situation? Anyways, good video, it got my mind thinking. 👍🏻
Thank you for your words of encouragement! Because of your kindness I now feel as if I can conquer any obstacle. You have a gift of positive energy. I can feel it! Thank you friend. You have made the world a better place.

Now you know how Chuck Noland in “Cast Away” felt‼️
Testing ourselves is something we should all do. Knowing what our skill level is will help us dial our gear/resources in. Great job.
This time Jason is the tool and MacGuyver would be proud .

Love getting both perspectives. When it doesn’t work it doesn’t work.
You guys are the experts, but I wouldn’t want to depend on a bow fire even if I was an expert. I guess very dependent on the weather
Jason I felt your pain of no water as I was drinking my iced tea.😎
Ha! Nice!!
@@ONThree love what you're doing. I have the classic weird sense of humor. God bless you.

Vines (none on the island) in our area don’t make a very good cordage. I have gotten lots of water from grape vines. Good idea!

Thank you for your experiment in survival. It get's me thinking about what I can (mostly can't) do
You endure it because you love it♥️
Id have found a capacitor to bridge for a spark 😮
Brilliant!
Atleast you tried mate. Perseverance is the first key to survival. Great vid gentlemen.
Thanks 👍
My hunting Daypack, all jobs done.
I would have chosen a grayl geopress as my one item.
Good choice!

I would guess that the island was completely forested. The pithy stalk plants used for hand drill spindles grow in fields and not on the water’s edge.
@@felkeryAgreed. I did not find anything worth using for a hand drill.
Awesome adventure guys! Keep'em coming!
Fun video Jason! I dug it!
Lesson learned 👉 the #☝️ thing to have on hand at all times “a BIC lighter” maybe 2 🔥🔥🔥
Yep!
Epic see ya on the next one
The one pair of shoes you find and still no shoe laces.
😂
Good video... thanks!
Now that’s survival at it’s finest
Should sharpen the metal on the edge of the glass door of the oven
Break the glass, stack pieces and magnifying fire????

Ever tried getting locked up in prison? Surely this man would use his creative skills to survive

Did you film this before all the rain in your area? If so, what did island look like after all the rain hit your area?
Yes. It was the week before. Not sure what it looks like now.
Would a hand drill been an option instead of bow drill?
Hand drill is pretty picky when it comes to recourses. I did not find anything worth trying on the island.
It’s always better to fail when your life doesn’t depend on it.
Agreed
I’m sitting here watching you thinking to myself, there has to be a different way to start a fire than a bow drill, anyone?? With what he has on him??

How dare you call me a tool.
Hahahaha!
All bundled up .. but wear sandals.
That spindle was probably too crooked, I bet you would have much better success with a straight one.
Not a lot of options on the island. I switched to a straight one towards the end. Still no luck.

Why don't anyone ever use a fire plow? It's a bit easier then a bow drill. But I get it a challenge is in the bow drill. But why not a fire plow??
I have tried the fire plow several times. Very difficult unless you have the perfect materials.
Was out for a 20 km hike other day came cross tvs mirco waves you don't know what you find what can use down the road
Hey! Where’d you get my toaster oven!
What state are you in?
Jason lives in Georgia. Not sure where the mystery Island is.
There's a ton of small islands off the coast of Georgia. @@gabehanratty4783
Georgia
We were in North Carolina
😂 you didn't have your batman 🦇 belt 😂
Why u don't plant some fruite trees in this island?ur this tree may beneficiary for our next generation😊
