I grew up with a younger brother who was born with cerebral palsy, he couldn't talk, walk and was even fed through a feeding tube. I was young myself then, I do however remember how much it touched my mother when people stopped to acknowledge, included him simply, showing normal decency and care. He was 10 years old when he passed away, I know he was surrounded with love. Your comment resonated with me personally and I just want to say thank you...thank you, for being that person that encouraged others to not turn away, the person who modeled what it looked like to acknowledge and invest your time into people with disabilities, people like my brother, who may have otherwise felt less significant. Thank you.
@@cheers0521 Thanks Billy! Before my current 24 years in local journalism, I spent 20 years before that in Human Services, with a number of those folks with CP and many other so-called disabilities. Some of those folks were the BEST teachers I ever encountered, even though many could not talk or walk or feed themselves, etc. If we really want to see the humanity in another person we have to look beyond the surface... and look with the eyes in our heart, not the eyes in our head. One of the points I kept reiterating dealt with the label "disability" and how it was functionally lacking. The reason is because the prefix "dis" essentially means "not." So if someone is "disabled" we're saying they are "not able." I say, not able to what?? Not able to feel joy and laugh, or feel pain and shed a tear? Not able to want to be loved? Not able to possess a soul? None of that holds true with those I considered to be my people. I say rather than labeling the disabled, we need to disable the label. When we "see" someone only with the eyes in our head (using subjective emotions/perceptions and predispositions and assumptions) we automatically fail to see their humanity right in front of us. And to avoid the tugging of conscience to look them in the eye, we look down or look away or turn away. History is replete with examples. You and your family were seeing your brother with the eyes in your heart. And doing so, you saw what so many others missed!! I'll end with this... and I care not if people think I'm crazy... there was a special place in Heaven for your brother.

I was going to comment on how this is one of my favorite songs because the lyrics are so profound and timeless. Yet reading many of these comments tells me the many do not understand these lyrics one bit. You need to look into the history and context that this song was created. Listen to the words Roger Waters says through out his life. Its consistent.
