I feel like Emily could have been a better friend than her friends. I felt that Andrea should have never quit Runway because, deep down she started loving her job and she was more pleasing her friends before putting herself first. I understand that she didn't want to turn like Miranda but she could have been that generation of women to change that stigma if she would have set boundaries to Miranda she would have respect her
@MrRickymoore She was better but still more of a colleague at best, when Miranda said she did it to Emily like she did to Nigel I was like WHAT?! Emily was mean, hostile shared little to nothing about her life, made fun of Andy at every chance, but when she got hit by karma, and a car we were supposed to believe she should feel bad? Nah, sucks for you bully I'm going to Paris. 😂
Her bf and her both agreed at the beginning that it was only for one year, so I never understood why within that same year he felt so betrayed by her commitment to her job. That said Andy becoming a workaholic is not just due to the industry - I’m finally accepting this label myself after years of my spouse calling me a workaholic and it’s very much just in me - regardless of what industry I’m in I live my job and in fact, it’s even worse when I actually like what I do…. So I have a feeling that even when Andy gets that job at a newspaper she will likely still be a workaholic, and they will not work out because that is not Nate’s cup of tea. And that’s his right. Everyone doesn’t want to date that
What gets me about that is that he's supposed to be a chef. Aren't those some of like the most hard-working people in the world? Don't they work crazy long hours? I'm no chef, but that's what I've heard. If he had a different kind of job where he wouldn't have those demands, I suppose his perspective would make more sense, but him being a chef just makes him look kinda hypocritical.
I love this movie “And Emily that’s all”, your view brought a whole new perspective bc I never even thought about it that way. Andy was growing so Nate should have progressed as well. They both could have been bosses and he could have open a successful restaurant. The guy that flirting with Andy was more of her speed bc you could tell he was going somewhere in life.
The situation was further exacerbated by Nate's demanding career as a chef, requiring him to work long hours and miss important events related to Andrea, while she only had to endure a one-year commitment at Runway, not a lifelong obligation.
Yes that’s what shocked me! He is atomie in the morning, in the evening… how is that possible for chef? They usually work long shifts. Maybe Nate cooked only during lunch time
The fact that Andy’s personality didn’t charge after the job- she always spoke nicely to Nate and her friends, was the first to apologize, and always wanted to talk the conflict out- convinces me that Nate didn’t really KNOW Andy. He knew her aesthetic. He sees Andy changing her looks as her changing entirely, because how she looks is how he perceives her. She was supposed to be his humble not-like-other-girls girlfriend. He wanted her to always look the way he wanted and to act the way he wanted. So once she did things for herself, he was done with the relationship. Notice that when he talks to her about being a stripper, he starts “I would’ve been fine with..”. It’s all about him and if she makes choices he approves of first, never about him talking WITH her, taking her plans and interests seriously, and understanding her choices. To him fashion will never be serious or important, he is not interested in learning, so that automatically means Andy’s job will never be serious or worth anything, therefore she had “no integrity”. He’s a man who doesn’t respect femininity, so when Andy starts dressing more femininely and gains feminine interests (remember, she was pleasantly surprised when she read some books about fashion!), he loses his respect for her.
THIS IS THE ONE!! I thought it was just me. Her friends were the ABSOLUTE WORST.😣 I can't even try to talk about her boyfriend. The boyfriend was bad and I don't mean "2023 - Unworthy of a Boss Girl" bad. I mean he was bad for the time at the release of the movie (2006). I'm not at all sure what the intention of the writers was in writing the dynamic she had with her friends and boyfriend. They were all toxic to Andy. Never have I once seen someone advocate for Andy in the way she deserved to be advocated for. I definitely have seen it about a million times. Everything you said in this hot take is the Gospel truth.
I completely agree with your thoughts on Nate and friends and will gladly die on this hill. For me the most telling scene about Nate is the Birthday one, i remeber it sticking with me even in the cinema. Firstly its a single birthday for the year she has to work there and not even a significant one, his complete lack of support and understanding is ridiculous especially (as you rightly said) with him being a chef, i wonder how many events, holidays and occasions hes had to miss. Secondly despite the party being over and him being ready for bed he makes the concious choice to stay up so that he can get a dig in and chastise Andi, that means either one of two things. One a grown ass man sat up pouting and sulking so he could hurt her for missing his little party or Two he conciously chose and planned to wait up for her just so he could scold her, manipulate her emotionally and twist the "quit your job" knife some more. Both these things are huge red flags, at best either hes an emotionally immature manchild or at worse hes a manipulative emotional game player if not emotional abuser. Its my headcanon she dropped him and the friends, grew closer as friends with emily left runway after a year with a whole new journalistic social circle, set herself up for life and never looked back. Learning not to repeat some of Mirandas crueler behaivours but taking her lessons and mentorship into her own successful story.
I don’t disagree with you, but be honest (completely honest): If the roles were reversed and the boyfriend missed the Bday party, would your opinion change?
@@gastondoumerc7863 Not at all, im hard pressed to imagine a situation where a true, healthy partner regardless of gender identity or role wouldnt understand thier significant other missing a singular (none significant) birthday event for a career defining job with an established expiration date. Also as stated in my comment Nate works in the kitchen/chef industry which is well known for being intense, time demanding and causing you to work on holidays and special dates. So though i have no in film proof i dont think its a wild assumption that he himself has probably missed things in thier past or arrived very late and not even for a career making role. Which even futher highlights his hipocrisy and problematic behaivour.

I always think about all of the points you share in this video. I'm not too fond of the ending of this movie. Andie should have realized how toxic his boyfriend was and agreed with herself that it was okay to work for Miranda since hard work is needed for success. She grew so much professionally, she was networking and utilizing every resource around her for her benefit. A year under Miranda could have given her so much more, no doubt. It's so sad also to see Miranda not being supported by her own husband either! Another little insecure man. Sad and annoying.
I'm still confused about how Miranda considered what she did to Nigel the same as what Andy did to Emily. From day one Emily was mean, rude, condescending, and shared nothing about her life, and made fun of her at every chance she got except for when she got Chic and thin; but when she got hit by Karma, a cold, and the car, we, and Andy, were supposed to believe that it was the same thing? Nah she treated her like less than a colleague and if karma decided she needed to sit it out Andy was right to go to Paris and enjoy herself.
watching this movie again at 28 made me realize how TERRIBLE both nate & her friends were. she didn’t do anything but decide to take her job seriously and make the most of her temp situation, shared perks w her friends for free, and upgrade her style. i HATE that she went back to him in the end, ugh
Watching this as an adult, he was definitely a sucky sensitive ass boyfriend!! 😂😂 her friends are on their paths while she got a once in a lifetime job opportunity and they act like they don't get that there was gonna be a shift that she was trying to navigate through
Yes. Yes. Yes. I’ve always despised Andy’s “friends”, especially for that phone trick but generally for their lack of understanding around the demands of her job. Nate is selfish, moody, and cruel. Andy’s better off without them.
ALSO! Andy didn't have her own friends, like what the heck? That's actually a giant red flag which is the major signal of the you-are-with-a-toxic-partner-my-beloved-friend kind of situation.
My best friend and I saw this movie when it came out in 2006. We're young millennials. The first thing we noticed when commenting on the movie was "shitty boyfriend, shitty friends." They're there to receive the gifts but not to support her.
I don't even think it's about her working in fashion. These kinds of time-consuming, highly committed jobs are common in other fields, even in industries that people like Nate would deem more "substantial," like architecture. It's especially time-consuming when you're just starting, familiarizing yourself, and trying to make a place in that workplace and industry. Whatever job Andy has, if she's dedicated to it, her relationship with Nate will always suffer because Nate wants to be the absolute priority in Andy's life. Basically, Andy's life has to revolve around Nate.
I understood what the movie tried to communicate. However, it focused more on how Andy should not be working in that industry rather than how working around certain people (Miranda) was changing her morals and values. There's nothing wrong with getting a better sense of style, professionalism, network, etc. Her friends and boyfriend knew what she was getting into, yet instead of criticizing the bad things she may have been integrating in her life, they complained about her working in the fashion industry and her appearance. The movie focused on the wrong issues (concerning Andy) and did not address the shortcomings of her boyfriend and friends. The only thing she had to apologize for was her lack of presence and her cheating.
She didn't cheat, they were not together. And she had the right to be busy because at the end of the day she is the one supporting her self and her bills, not the awful friends and boyfriend
I love how at the end it was somehow ok for him to just up and take a job out of state as a sous chef when they had just “taken a break” while she was in Paris. Not a lot of time had passed so hypocrisy much?
Yeah a part of me wonders if Nate only really got with Andy because he viewed her as someone that he wouldn't have any competition for, would be easy to stay with since she had low self esteem, and thus is okay with the bare minimum. Her becoming more successful at her job and dressing better made her more desirable to other guys (since she wasn't frumpy or unfashionable anymore) and she was gaining more confidence. Or he thought Andy was going to be more successful than him if she continued and it was hurting his ego. Considering he talks down to interests women have...yeah. Andy would have forever been below his level if she did what he wanted and Miranda ended up blacklisting her everywhere. Like Nate the CHEF didn't care enough to not burn her grilled cheese. I'm not a chef and the only time something burns when I'm cooking is when I didn't know the burner got red hot.
I watched this for the 1st time yesterday. Nate hated Andrea was doing better than her, which means he had to level up in his life. Nate was stuck in his comfort zone and the moment he saw Andrea doing better and changing her image he wanted her to be at the same level as him
This is so true on everything!!! I had a best friend for years that we honestly would do not the greatest stuff together. We did substances together a lot and got into situations that were sketchy but we were so lost that we didn’t care. I found art one day and fully feel in love and dived into it and became so happy and I noticed such a difference with our friendship. She was not happy that I was no longer being miserable with her. Seeing me better myself made her resent me sadly. But luckily I got away from that toxic friendship.
Well, I'm about to turn 58, I'm recently retired and fully dedicated to my career as a writer of fiction, which until now I was only able to do part time. I burned out at my job as a journalist so I stepped out. My divorce was bitter, I got cheated on, and most of my friends never understood my hours. or have read my books. I date but guys usually like to think I'm an aspiring writer, not one that has been publishing for almost 20 years, and they walk away when they realize that's a career, not a retirement hobby. I'm happy for whoever gets to have it all, because on the brink of old age, I must say I never could.
Wow, this is very true. I love this movie but I absolutely can’t deny how much it villainizes ambitious women. The ending kind of tugged on my heartstrings a bit, but this video snapped me out of it. Andy was leveling up and realizing the depths of her talent and potential. She had a successful, well connected man pining for her. She was obviously a star. It’s sad to see the ending of this movie where she gave up all of her potential to stay stagnant. If she’d stuck with Miranda, she’d be famous, wealthy, well connected and married to someone ambitious and successful.
Wow took me this long to realize his jealousy towards Andy. Technically they were both climbing the corporate fence-Andy just reached hers sooner than expected without really any firsthand knowledge whereas Nate had undergone years of training and schooling just to be appointed to Port wine reduction duty. Andy needed the experience to catapult her to the career of her choosing where Nate already received formal training at his craft. Not to mention her inertness towards Runway which Nate makes references to throughout the film where he in contrast exudes true passion for his craft because he knows it's a stepping stone. On the other hand his partner isn't as appreciative for the opportunity she was literally handed without any forethought although this is a step closer to her real future as well. Lack of gratitude having landed a coveted position plus no prior knowledge of the editorial and its associates despite the aspiration to become a journalist are breeding grounds for jealousy in someone who not only takes their profession seriously but also has the qualifications and education to back it up. Only drawing towards the end of the film do we see Nate having acquired his dream job not only take a smugness towards Andy's utter failure in not completing her year at Runway, but finally agreeing to compromise on their relationship and outside life goals once he gains higher economic status.
Oh if Miranda met Nate or any of the friends they would be seriously dressed down and be looking for a new ass, because she tore them a new one 😂😅 God help them~
13:50 now there... I hate Nate with a passion, that's why I searched for this video. But I don't think "fashion" is what people think it is. Nowadays people confuse fashion with trends. I do like fashion, but I won't go out of my way to adhere to it and much less follow some trends. In addition, beautiful, and well-dressed women aren't always confident, as can be evidenced by Emily Blunt's character. Arrogance isn't confidence, that's another thing people confuse. As for makeup: I haven't used makeup until I was about 25. Do/did I hate it? No, it's lovely. But I still can't stand the trends. I think if you were to see me under this black and white, superficial lens you created you would make the conclusion that I "hate" fashion, or "hate" makeup, and would be left with a dilemma of why a girl like that would hate Nate (or NOT hate beautiful confident women for that matter). But I don't think anyone would like Nate, that's the thing. I don't think even other men would approve of Nate. He's just an all-around loser. I can't understand why they even made an unattractive character like that. Must be the script writer's personal bad experience from the past or something... And I have to admit, your wish for Miranda having to meet Nate and give Andy "motherly advice" is just perfect. Nate would have vanished like an evil spirit at Miranda's single glance.
The only way I can enjoy the ending is if I see it as “Andy has self esteem issues that lead to being mistreated at work and in her personal life. At the end of the film she’s overcome one aspect, but the battle is not finished.”
I didn't like Nate, but Andy should have had better boundaries with the blond "fashion guy" (Christian?) when she was with Nate. She was flirting back with him for sure, which isn't okay. And he was obviously a jerk too (just a different kind of jerk). Her friend wasn't wrong to call her out for flirting with him. But I agree with you about everything else!
I don't know who I hate the most in this film, between Nate, Andy, Lily, Miranda, or the other"friend"!!!! In my oppinon, the two BEST characters in this film were Nigel, and Christian!!!!
Can we be honest here for a moment, people in general get attracted to other humans, now granted that doesn’t mean you act on it however it’s human nature. Let’s not sit here and pretend as though it doesn’t happen, especially when you’re not getting support at home from your significant other, Is that not the reason why a lot of men claim to cheat ? “My wife wasn’t supporting me, she stopped doing things she used to” did she act on it ? No. Did she tell him she had a boyfriend ? Yes. Did she giggle when he flirted ? Yes because she’s not a robot and you can’t control what people do. I guess she was supposed to run away and scream he flirted with her 😂 Secondly if you have someone who isn’t uplifting you, supporting you and putting you down for every single thing you seem to not be “doing right” you’re going to have negative feelings towards them even if it isn’t your S/O it could be your own friend. No one owes you anything, no one is responsible for your happiness or your insecurities. That’s for you, God and therapy, and if it isn’t fixed before getting into any relationship there will always be cracks and things sliding in or even choosing the wrong people because you haven’t worked or fixed yourself
This comment is hilarious because when m e n level up and leave their childhood sweethearts for IG models and industry women y’all clap for him but her being attracted to another man is 3v!l , the same m e n who are in relationships and follow sc@ntily c|@d w0 m 3 n and say it’s nothing wrong with it ohhhh the irony of it all. Bffr when you’re in a different space things change, including relationships.
And rightfully so. She met men who were supportive, useful and could give her a decent life. This is what happems when you level up. If people do not do the same and get resentful of you for doing it, you will outgrow them and leave! Men who level up end up leaving too. Yet men are aloud, right? Get out of here.
Wow, that was such a good line, 'A lot of people are friends because they are on the same level. They don't like to see them elevate.' If he had a different kind of job where he wouldn't have those demands, I suppose his perspective would make more sense, but him being a chef just makes him look kinda hypocritical.
Lily was a haterrr, thank you i been saying this for yearssss
Exactly! That's all that I wanted as the end story. I vote Nate is an abuser, heads down. I've seen those in real life.
Which even futher highlights his hipocrisy and problematic behaivour.
no need for headcannon. in the next book, she breaks up with him
@@ulexite Nate was a crybaby. Just like my first husband was. I worked late. His mother even called me and asked me if I was having an affair. Lol.
the scene when Andrea gave her friends gifts and they in turn thank her by playing keep away with her phone always make me mad. I was mad when I watched the scene at 11 and Im still mad as a full grown adult. 🙄
fr i hated that scene bc they tried to frame andy for being uptight, when they were acting like children. i think they’re all supposed to be like 23-25yo too which is worse 😒
I can’t stand people like her friends
They wanted the spoils of her job but didn’t want her to have her job.
@@heartsmyfaceforever8140 it made me frustrated as a kid and just plain angry now as an adult bc what do you mean you’re going to do toddler grabby-hands for the $$$$ purse w/o a thank you but then do hot potato when the REASON you got that purse is calling??? pisses me off so bad i had to come back to comment again lol
He was very trash. No woman should apologize for leveling up and looking good.
Yep 💯
At the end of the movie Nate gets a job as a sous-chef, so he’s going to have a demanding boss, crazy schedule, and work long hours just like Andy
watching this movie again at 28 made me realize how TERRIBLE both nate & her friends were. she didn’t do anything but decide to take her job seriously and make the most of her temp situation, shared perks w her friends for free, and upgrade her style. i HATE that she went back to him in the end, ugh
Watching this as an adult, he was definitely a sucky sensitive ass boyfriend!! 😂😂 her friends are on their paths while she got a once in a lifetime job opportunity and they act like they don't get that there was gonna be a shift that she was trying to navigate through
There’s no benefit of age even being a chef cause he can’t even cook a proper grilled cheese. He BURNED it .
Yes. Yes.
He wanted someone who could accept what he had to give. (Nothing) hanging out with those women would elevate her expectations
I hated Nate and her friends immediately.
The fact that Miranda treated Andy better than her "friends" and boyfriend says a lot about them
Oh yes you are right
My best friend and I saw this movie when it came out in 2006. We're young millennials. The first thing we noticed when commenting on the movie was "shitty boyfriend, shitty friends." They're there to receive the gifts but not to support her.
Finally someone is talking about this
I don't even think it's about her working in fashion.
Right! I couldn't stand him even as a kid
@@sissi6013 Of course she has the right to be busy. Not being available for your friends and family will have it's consequences, as with anything.
Nate was stuck in his comfort zone and the moment he saw Andrea doing better and changing her image he wanted her to be at the same level as him
Andy could have been the next Miranda.
I thought her friends and boyfriend was good as a child, but now you swayed me on how rude and unsupportive her friends and boyfriend are.
I watched this movie first time as a straight male in 2024 and I agree 100% w you. Was literally yelling at the screen entire time.
I haven't seen the movie in years and will be rewatching this. Especially after this video.
Emily is a much better friend than those who claimed to be her friends
The only way I can enjoy the ending is if I see it as “Andy has self esteem issues that lead to being mistreated at work and in her personal life. At the end of the film she’s overcome one aspect, but the battle is not finished.”
I didn't like Nate, but Andy should have had better boundaries with the blond "fashion guy" (Christian?) when she was with Nate. She was flirting back with him for sure, which isn't okay. And he was obviously a jerk too (just a different kind of jerk). Her friend wasn't wrong to call her out for flirting with him. But I agree with you about everything else!
What's wrong with liking nice things? 😂
Sidebar - Nicki has the best veneers period!!!😂😂 I love her teeth and smile so much lol
They were her enemies

I don't know who I hate the most in this film, between Nate, Andy, Lily, Miranda, or the other"friend"!!!! In my oppinon, the two BEST characters in this film were Nigel, and Christian!!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
God how I hated that pr#ck
Yeah you’re complaining about his insecurities but she did EXACTLY What a woman who ‘Levels up’ does. She started becoming attracted to other men
Can we be honest here for a moment, people in general get attracted to other humans, now granted that doesn’t mean you act on it however it’s human nature. I guess she was supposed to run away and scream he flirted with her 😂
Secondly if you have someone who isn’t uplifting you, supporting you and putting you down for every single thing you seem to not be “doing right” you’re going to have negative feelings towards them even if it isn’t your S/O it could be your own friend.
Girl looking back at this movie they were all trash like they didn’t want her to succeed 🥺🥺🩷
