You can tell a lot about the weather by the water level in the Burn and the flow, it's been the same down here - time to build an Ark ! 🤨 Standard advice is to leave cutting back fascias till risk of frost has passed, but I often cut mine half way back to tidy them up in Feb then hard back to buds in late April/May, but we're milder down here ! Seeds are generally looking great Andy, there are always some that don't germinate and we shouldn't be surprised with the old ones I suppose, I'm guilty of trying my luck with those also - I'd still broadcast the remaining seed in the garden borders, particularly the flowers - you never know your luck ! Nothing wrong with keeping a Spreadsheet, I do the same, admittedly a little simpler in design ! 😉 It'll be interesting to see if you get any "volunteers" germinating in the compost you've re-used for the potting up. For the record, it's not considered a great idea to re-use compost from failed sowings for new seed sowing or pricking out of very young seedlings as they can be susceptible to viruses and keel over and die, so not worth saving for this even though it's got bloomin' expensive in recent years. Gone are the days when you could get three grow bags for a fiver but it's only about five years and they're almost that each now ! Get yourself some hoops for your beds, better for the net and safer for your eyes than canes ! 20mm MDPE is about £1/m or Pex pipe is a bit more for 2 or 3m lengths but quite convenient if they happen to be the right length - I also made some covers out of solvent weld overflow pipe and fixings and chicken wire which is a fun project ( although chicken wire can be evil stuff ) !
You do know that morning glories are essentially bindweed right? :). Run a light fan on your leggy plants to make them more hardy. It's called hardening off.
Wow Andy, I didn't expect such an emotional rollercoaster! Anyway, my Mum keeps some seeds in the Fridge. Looking forward to you phoning in to Gardener's Question Time!
Hi Andy, Good idea with those lights in the green house, send them back they don't serve any purpose and for £16 put the money back to better use. Your fuchsias are coming back to life you can trim off the old stems, those seedling at the end are looking good. You are doing great in the green house, catch you soon take care
Hi Andy, fairly new to your channel and very much enjoying the English gardening (I'm in Australia). I think your solar lights are probably just fine, i have a few sets of the second lot you showed, it may be your English sun and your expectations from the amount of direct sun they receive. I noticed no mulching in your garden, is that the usual way in England?
You can get labels with a smooth and a rough side. Just use pencil (if you can find one) on the rough. It stays on through all weathers and you just rub it off to reuse.
I use a pencil to write on my markers, you can use an eraser to remove the writing, but I usually just reuse the ones I wrote since I sow the same things every year
Also, we use those pvc electric conduit pipes to create a sort of tunnel for our netting, or even plastic foils to create a sort of greenhouse temperature underneath.
Good netting you'll need for carrots and alliums check out Gardening Naturally fine netting and soft butterfly netting for brassicas on hoops secured with pegs .
Yup, plus pozi screwdriver doesn't work in philips screws so it means hunting around for a philips driver... and supplied screws are normally rubbish anyway. 👍
Green potato skin would imply they're trying to photosynthesise because they were left in the light! Can't imagine you'd have issues growing them, but don't hold me to it. Eating them is a bad plan unless you enjoy spending a few hours on the John.
Certain seeds you have to use fresh like carrots, parsnips and often onions but some last for years like brassicas .Cardboard rolls are a mess ,only tried them once 😊
Not sure why but toilet roll tubes always go mouldy. I had more success with a wooden pot maker that you wrap newspaper round to form a pot. Whole thing is then planted out when ready. I bought the wooden pot maker but should be easy enough to fashion from some wide diaper dowel or similar. Oh and we have a large built planer in our yard and our cat thinks it’s her litter tray too 😂
You do like to hear the birds singing. The issue we have with solar lights is not so much the quality but Mrs putting them in places where Mr can attack them with the strimmer as my main contribution to proper gardening being cutting the lawn 🌞
It's just in conditional formatting. Format -> Conditional -> Data Bar. I use LibreOffice Calc so might be slightly different in Excel but I think it works along the same lines. 👍
Cheers! I had one a few years ago (different garden) that grew like a huge hedge and never needed cutting back. Perhaps that's when they're more mature. 🤔👍
I’m no expert but I did read somewhere that to chit potatoes they needed to be in a dark place. Also I do have experience of fuchsia and you need to cut the dead stuff back. Also with climbing plants I think you need to trim them back slightly as well so they don’t become too spindly over time. 🤷♀️Thanks for the seed spreadsheet info. I guess I’ve got a load of seeds to get rid of too. ❤
We lost a bottlebrush as well this year. Not a particularly cold winter in Bucks this year but it's not showing any signs of life yet. I bought some plastic hoops for our raised planters & covered them with netting held on with bulldog clips. I got some Geranium plugs at a local growers. Bought loads of them for our floor planters, pots, wall planters & hanging baskets. They are currently in the conservatory until there's no chance of any frost. I've also invested in a battery operated lawn scarifier to rejuvenate our lawns & remove all the moss. Your vids provide lots of motivation to get out in the garden Andy. 🪴
Thank you! I seem to remember we had quite a hard frost and snow in early Dec - think that's what did it. Other than that it's just been relentless rain. 😭
Sharpie gets sharpie off best. Scribble over old sharpie and rub off. Great garden video
Always relaxing _(for me anyway)_ to watch you pottering around the garden Andy. Thanks for the video.
No worries - glad you enjoy them! 😁

Cheers - great tips! Ha yes, found some volunteer carrots seedlings in the compost. A couple finally germinated! Too late. 😁

Wow Andy, I didn't expect such an emotional rollercoaster! Anyway, my Mum keeps some seeds in the Fridge. Looking forward to you phoning in to Gardener's Question Time!
Ha thank you! Yeah heard similar things about keeping seeds cool! 👍

Cheers! So excited about the seedlings. You should see them now - just a couple of weeks later. They're huge! 😂👍

Hi and a very warm welcome to Australia! I have mulched the garden but it needs much more. Winter wipes it out. 👍🌞
You can get labels with a smooth and a rough side. Just use pencil (if you can find one) on the rough. It stays on through all weathers and you just rub it off to reuse.
Cheers! Those are ASDA labels and are rough on both sides so defo think pencil might be the better route. 👍👍

Ah good plan on reusing old ones!
Also, we use those pvc electric conduit pipes to create a sort of tunnel for our netting, or even plastic foils to create a sort of greenhouse temperature underneath.

Sounds like a plan! 👍👍
Genuine question, @3:40 what’s wrong with the Philips screws? Why throw them away?
Heads of screws strip and round when tightening, much better with pozidrive or torx.
Yup, plus pozi screwdriver doesn't work in philips screws so it means hunting around for a philips driver... and supplied screws are normally rubbish anyway. 👍
Remove Sharpie with magic eraser and washing up liquid
Will give that a try!
Yes they do. Wasted time and compost!
I get to keep the compost! 🤪
Green potato skin would imply they're trying to photosynthesise because they were left in the light! Can't imagine you'd have issues growing them, but don't hold me to it. Eating them is a bad plan unless you enjoy spending a few hours on the John.
Yeah, not sure if I'll even use them. I seem to have way too many potato plants. 😁
Certain seeds you have to use fresh like carrots, parsnips and often onions but some last for years like brassicas .Cardboard rolls are a mess ,only tried them once 😊
Cheers! Yeah, don't think I'll bother with loo rolls again. 😂

WD40 and a good wash in some soapy water afterwards for Sharpie on plant labels.
I use an ordinary pencil on the rough side of my plant labels which seems to stay on well and is easy to remove too. Enjoying watching the videos 🪻🌻🪷
Mrs fazzini uses plastic egg boxes for starting seeds off. She also uses them for storing seed potatoes. No idea if it works but she keeps doing it 😂
You do like to hear the birds singing. The issue we have with solar lights is not so much the quality but Mrs putting them in places where Mr can attack them with the strimmer as my main contribution to proper gardening being cutting the lawn 🌞
Ha yes, the birds are getting quite noisy now - especially the dawn chorus! 😂😎
Should have brought back test Tuesday for the cleaning of the name tags when testing all the products
Ha not a bad idea! Test Tuesday will be returning soon (ish)!
Random question, how do you get that gradient colour effect in your Spreadsheet @16:11 ?
It's just in conditional formatting. Format -> Conditional -> Data Bar. I use LibreOffice Calc so might be slightly different in Excel but I think it works along the same lines. 👍
I always cut my fuchsias right back, I normally do it in winter, but I don't think it matters too much.
Cheers! I had one a few years ago (different garden) that grew like a huge hedge and never needed cutting back. Perhaps that's when they're more mature. 🤔👍
You can cut up plastic milk bottles to make seed markers, then recycle when done so you don't need to clean off the Sharpie
Exactly what I'm doing now 😁👍
Remove Sharpie with steel wool . Quick rub works great .
👍
omg, it's so long since I heard someone say clarty ... I love you XXX
Ha ha - there's lots of clartiness around here!! 😍
Small plastic water bottles on your canes to keep netting up.
Defo - that's my plan. 👍
Use sandpaper to repurpose plastic plant labels.
Good plan!
I’ve found out of date seeds can just turn mouldy
Yup!

They must chit in the light otherwise you get spindly shoots which are no good
@@wales123100 my mistake. Not an expert, as I said. 👍
@@carolynewilliams1194 i used to the same in the beginning!
Thanks all! 👍
