SPOILERS: I love the look on Quasimodo's face after he kills Frollo. It goes from victorious joy from defeating his oppressor, and the person who murdered his only friend, to that of realizing that now everyone he loves is gone. It's so heartbreaking, yet an amazing acting choice.
CastielDestler I understand the feeling. However, I've learned to never say never. Even if this production is no longer running, I have the feeling that we will be seeing some future variations in adaptation of Disney's Hunchback in some form or another; I have a feeling that our current stage version won't be the final/permanent iteration, I consider it another experimental entry. I personally love seeing multiple adaptations and where they take the material.
Does anyone else find Drew’s(Quasimodo) screeching in his performance oddly satisfying? Like how it effectively conveys the near animalistic persona his character is capable of(like that of a panicked, defensive one), as well as establishes the blatantly pure humanism that completes his whole personality? It’s like it shows you how he’s both wild and innocent, morose and kind, like two contradictory traits mashing together to create a being that’s capable of so much(good, bad, or both) because of his strength(ringing the bells and saving Esmeralda, hanging Phoebus by one arm and knocking Frollo of Notre Dame, or pouring a pot of molten lead to block anyone from getting into Notre Dame) as well as being subtle enough about it to keep the audience guessing if he’s actually a monster, character wise(if to a lesser degree than Frollo), or not! This started as a question, but really I’m just saying I really like Drew Sarich’s performance here(as well as the cast recording), and both he and Michael Arden make compelling characteristics for Quasimodo. Different somewhat, yes(depending on the script), but still very interesting. :) To be honest, though, I’m REALLY interested in seeing Ben Platt take on this role. Seeing him effectively convey Quasi’s innocence and aloofness, and hearing his tenor(which I feel is classical enough with his vibrato, with a rock edge much like Drew Sarich’s) display the musical BEST from Alan Menken’s score and convey the rawest emotion out of Stephen Schwartz lyrics! What do you think?

I would love to say that after watching this production over and over in the last couple of days, that Drew Sarich is the number 1 actor to portray the role of Quasimodo and both Ruby Coselte and Ann Christin Elverum are the two number 1 actresses to portray the role of Esmerelda. If they were to redo the production of Der Glockner Von Notre Dame I would love for all three I.e. Drew Sarich, and both either Ruby Coselte or Ann Christin Elverum to once again reprise they're portraying roles of Quasimodo and Esmerelda. Sarah McGill I saw this musical last year in St. George, Utah at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre for my birthday. My dad took me to see it. It was incredible. We had front row seats. Everything was live. The fireworks ( which went on during the song Topsy Turvy), fire, animals, and confetti. Whoever was sitting up front got covered in the confetti. Me and my dad completely loved the guy who played Quasimodo. He was just incredible. The actors in order were Ernie Pruneda (Clopin Trouillefou), Aloysius Gigl (Don Claude Frollo), Brock Dalgleish (Jehan Frollo), Belen Moyano (Florika), Lawrence Asher (Father Dupin), Julian Decker (Quasimodo), David Sattler (Captain Phoebus de Martin), Jeff Sullivan (Lieutenant Frederic Charles), Summer Naomi (Esmeralda), Rod Roberts (King Louis XI), Shari Jordan (Madam), and Brian Cali (Saint Aphrodisius).

I watched the production on RUclips from Paper Mill Playhouse. Great singers/actors but it had been enormously sanitized & one remark was he/she wished the James Lapine lyrics had been kept. The PMP's production also did not have the statues. I remember seeing the Disney movie and critics remarked that one problem was that the film could not really focus on the age group the film was meant for. Frollo's lusting for Esmeralda was disconcerting for a child's film. It reached the darkness that adult audiences could understand of Frollo's lusting for Esmeralda. Of course, the film ending had to have Quasimodo not throw Frollo purposely from the tower and Quasimodo's understanding that Phoebus & Esmeralda belonged together. I so like this production and have listened to the CD many times from the previous production.
Shane Brown the production I saw was in English but I have no idea who James Lapine is. I have never heard of him. I am so sorry. The one I saw had both the original songs from the Disney film and new songs. If you want to know what the new songs are, I will tell you. Here is the weird thing, though. Even though it had the original songs from the Disney film, the name Disney isn’t mentioned and here is why. At least I think this is why. The ending was changed to the original ending that is in the book by Victor Hugo I believe which is Esmeralda actually does die. I don’t know if this next bit I am going to tell you is in the book but at the end of the show, Quasimodo dies too. He dies of probably depression, sadness and whatever else. When Esmeralda dies, he holds her in his arms and doesn’t let go. He seems to hold her the way he does even when he is dead. A narrator says that many years later some explorers came up to them and touched Quasimodo’s head. When that happened, Quasi and Esmeralda became dust. Now, the actors obviously didn’t become dust. When that happened, the actors just slowly went through a trap door. Also, Quasimodo actually does throw Frollo off the roof of Notre Dame. For that, they had the actor playing Frollo attached to wire. When Quasi throws Frollo, Frollo falls in slow motion to the stage floor and lands face down. As he is falling he moves his hands and legs in slow motion as well. Btw, during the show there was live fireworks, confetti, fire, and animals. It was amazing. There is actually a trailer right here on RUclips for the one I saw. I think you can look up either Tuacahn Amphitheater musicals or Tuacahn Amphitheater The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Or The Hunchback of Notre Dame stage musical. To be honest, the Tuacahn production is sooooo much better than the Papermill Playhouse production in every way. I did more research & Lapine re-wrote the book Disney film version into the 1999 musical German version. What is posted here appears to be his book version. I bought the 1999 German version CD of the show. My favorite song is "Hoch Über der Welt". My German is not the strongest by any means but understood enough to really treasure so many of the songs. What I saw here on RUclips from Papermill Playhouse, I did not like that they no longer used Lapine's original re-writing. Again, thanks for answering! :)

Still the much superior version of the stage musical. Better book, the new songs for this were written close enough to the movie where they still sound like they belong, the newer stuff in the American version like Flight into Egypt and Place of Miracles stick out like a sore thumb. Not to mention the extra long prologue trying to force Jehan Frollo into the plot as anything more than being annoying and unnecessary like in the novel
