When I was a kid in the mid 70's we all had fold over Old Timer pocketknives. A friend of mines grandpa had this huge Tri wheeled leather belt machine he had made. We saw him using it one day and asked him to sharpen our pocketknives, he did then warned use to be careful because they were way sharper than we were used to. He wasn't lying, I cut my thumb just barely touching that blade! lol
@@pinetree5489 Yes, I was 9 or 10 years old when that happened. I really enjoyed the learning times of that time period so long ago. I truly didn't understand a right from a wrong decision back then. Learning was on the fly back then; I miss the innocence of the time period back then. It's hard to believe almost 50 years has passed since then, I almost remember it like it was yesterday. I don't understand how other people don't remember learning times of their past that are my age. I guess my plate was empty and I was all about learning how to fill it. That served me well for years to come, I forget the things that aren't worth remembering, I guess.

keep a sandwich plate by your sharpening table ... a ceramic one ... the ring on the bottom is bare ceramic ... and works great for the final passes ... also holds paints for arrows and things ... or coffee mugs ... or sandwiches ... even candles and beer too ... ;)
Our deer season runs through the 22 of Dec, Don't really care for how close the hunters came to the back of the barn, though. I have stock. I have to have thyroid surgery on Dec. 20th. Yah, no Christmas turkey for me, but will fix Christmas dinner just the same. Maybe I will try the AG1 in the New Year. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks Shawn, I used to watch my Dad sharpen knives with that knife sharpener you were using and I didn’t understand the concept back then but I do now. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
We all need to sharpen our minds as well as our tools, Shawn. You have gained an incredible amount of knowledge over the years, Your contribution is more important to those out there who are considering Self-Reliance living in their future. We all now know that it takes strong team work to make it thrive. Wishing you much success, Shawn.
I’ve made dozens of drop point knives over the years for skinning knives . Most of them were made from old sawmill saw blades and tempered to where a new 8 inch file will just barely cut them . After I got them finished and sanded out I used a cloth wheel and jewelers rouge on an electric motor to polish the blades and finish the sharp edge . The blade would have a mirror finish on it . I sold many of them and gave some to friends and family . I’ve made some out of planer blades too and once you get them sharp and polished out you hardly ever have to sharpen them again . All you have to do if polish the edge again with the cloth wheel . I sure enjoy all your videos every week . We like deer meat here in Arkansas too .
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if the world returned to the time of hunting and fishing, without the current comforts... because playing cabin is easy, but the hard part is having lived in that time without the comforts of today
Good job you have a thick coat Cali as retreieving your toy in thick deep snow would soon freeze your belly and legs. My good friend Winter was a hunter and if he managed to shoot a deer, he'd hang it for three days then butcher it himself, as that was his job in civilian life. Good to see some traditions never die Shawn.
Makes me appreciate my childhood. I give credit to my parents for the things I've learned. We were very self-sufficient. Hunted, fished, trapped and grew a huge garden. Processing deer was like running an assembly line. Miss those days.

I have that same little wood stove.. I put it out in the shed though.. and now I'm using a 55 gallon drum kit.. I like it a lot better; Much more room. I welded in some cross bars and put in heavy sheet metal in the top so that it traps all the heat and has a good burn before it just escapes straight out of the flue. I liked that little stove though; My house is just too big for it.

AG1 yes it keeps you Sharp. Fun to see the deer move into and out of an area. I keep trying it in small amounts
Just a FYI. AG1 is quite expensive. May be a good product but it will cost you
Sure would be nice to be able to see what you are doing on the bench top
It is a while since I have seen much activity at the main cabin, with most at the workshop.
The only tool that I have is my brain...and you are right, it isn't too sharp!😊
haha
