U can easily do this at home.. just skip the rice cooker.. Hot Pan.. Oil minced garlic and onion.. saute.. then add rice and fry.. 3 min later add water or broth as you like.. one cup at a time.. then add all the things you like.. cheese, herbs, beacon(if you like), sausage (optional).. and keep stirring.. after 15min take of the heat and keep stirring (add salt to taste).. too dry add little broth.. too wet (on and off the heat).. off heat just stir it (to avoid rice sticking to the pan).. Risotto in 30min...

Nope, because the onion isn't supposed to fry, in risotto, it just has to become translucent (in Italian we say “appassire”, wither). I agree that the oil should have been hotter, imho, but not boiling, otherwise you'd immediately fry the onion
