My Grandfather, who is still alive and kicking at 100 yrs old. Put those cables up on half dome as well as helped to build the golf course at Yosemite. He always told us when we were growing up that he was proud of the work he did there as a young man part of the California Conservation Corps.
Creating one trail for people to use has a lot less impact than people picking their own path up the mountain. Keeps the traffic and potential litter to a smaller area.
Jared Gilbert of course there's always Mr Downer in the comments. Go ahead, try walking up the dome without the cables and poles. Natural selection will thank you.
Good job. Brings back a fine memory. Did this in 1992 with wife and 15 year old daughter and 78 year old stepfather. He got the cheers when he reached the top. That man was in good shape.
If you're afraid of heights but still want to scale HD, the trick is to don't look up or down. Just take it one step at a time and focus on the few feet in front of you.
Nah! Just tackle something else if you're having doubts or are unprepared, because all you're doing is putting yourself and others in danger and you;re inhibiting other people's enjoyment. Tackling one of your biggest fears here, is just selfish
SuperJourneyer I tackled my fear of heights by watching. that's the limit of my vertigo. would never even dream of going there and trying this. I'd just put people in danger trying to rescue me when I froze up there not being able to ascend our descend. I know my limits and this is not one I'd do. would be extremely selfish to everyone else and those who had to rescue me off. common sense should always prevail.don't take on what you're incapable of doing.
Chris Barry Glad they put a quota system in with more awareness of what it requires. When we did it far too many people had no idea what they were getting in to and were paralyzed with fear, unable to move. We ended up going on the outside of the ropes just to get down because it was so clogged up.
I am so grateful to have accidentally come across both your ascent and descent go pro videos of the cable route on Half Dome. In 1978 I hiked this trail, from the valley floor up and back, in one day. I was a 37 y/o woman hiking alone. Though I had seen photos of the cable route, when I came over Little Dome and saw what was before me I could barely believe it. Then I girded myself for the upward journey figuring I hadn't come all that way to turn around. It was one of the most memorable events of my life and I never expected to experience (or relive) it once again until I came across your RUclips videos. Thank you, from my heart. Peace, BJ
Made it to the base of el cap last September a whopping four hundred feet! Realized my knees, heart and lungs could no longer handle it. At 68 y/o that ship has sailed for me. Sad. Appreciate anyone who can film it. It’s quite a feat. Congrats to one and all for completing their dream. You are all rock stars I’m my book. I would consider it if Jimmy Chin or Alex Honnold took me up there. Lol

Thank you for posting this. I have loved Yosemite since I went there the first time when I was 21. I live in Northern California and go there whenever I can. I used to not be afraid of heights, and I had a goal to climb this by the time I was age 50. Now I am almost 62 and after watching this, I know for sure I couldn't do it now. But thank you for taking me along. I wish the lens was not wide-angle, though, (not complaining, just an observation!) as it was difficult to get perspective when you looked off to the side and other times. I got a bit dizzy, LOL! I didn't plan to watch the entire 22-minute video, but I DID! Some of those large packs people are wearing really seem a danger to me. Thanks again, guys!
What a fabulous video of the cables. These cables set Half Dome apart from almost all other hikes. What a great experience. So many ppl were going down backwards. In my three times using the cables, I've seen a few, but not as many as in the video.
I am pleased to see many things in this video. One, the shot of people backing down the cables. I thought I was a big wuss for doing that in 1976 when I went up for the first time. The second was that big CRACK you had to get over near the very top. I had forgotten about that CRACK up until now, but I remember thinking how in God's green earth was I able going to make it up and over that thing (I did). Thanks for the memories, Gabe.
Thanks for posting! This was one of the best videos I've ever seen. Watching in the comfort of my living room, I felt vertigo, and shortness of breath. Excellent video. Would like to see the downward journey, also. Congratulations on the excursion!!
Yes. I never climbed it when I would have been able to, so I’m THRILLED to have a sense of what it might be like. Climbing down seems scarier and I’d LOVE to see footage of that, too.
It surprises me that there are not two lanes of cables. One for ascending and one for descending. There's always congestion at places like these, and particularly when you least want it. If a sudden thunderstorm appeared, everyone would have to get down the cables in a hurry, and a single person freezing or panicking in the middle of the cables could put many more in danger.
I made it to the top in 2004, wow 10 years ago, the cables didn't look so bad back then, although I was scared I don't remember it as being difficult, now after watching this, in my mid 30's, I don't know if I could do the 11 miles hike plus the ascending to the top again...Awesome video, brought great memories!!!
I have been up this several times. My kid first time at seven ( harness, rock/mountaineer stuff volunteering help). Before the kid could make it, empty cables up (we started early), outside cables down. They got the technique. Board, test step test step, and good to go for the next board. When it is busy it is only one cable you can use. When you get almost to the the top there is a sketchy big step up where the cables are not as much help. Then before you know it you are at the top. There is an amazing amount of room at the top.

that looks so much easier than when i did it back in like 2005. there were so many people that there was a major bottleneck and you only got one cable because one cable was for ascending and the other was descending. on top of that people would freak out and sit down, blocking the inside of the cables, so you would have to hang outside of the cables to go around them. it took about 45 minutes to get up and 45 minutes to get down.
My husband and I succeeded in climbing half dome this week. We were so happy that we: started at 5am, brought a lot of food, 2 L water and a water filter and had gloves that we bought from OSH....the gloves saved the day. Your arms need to be able to pull you up the cables. We did a hike in LA....up Mt Baldy, that was more difficult than half dome. Don't underestimate the "sub dome" either.....so glad we did this.!!!
@@virginiaalvarez6424 having a fun hobby isnt stupid. I understand if your not brave enough to do this, many people arent but no reason to be a stuck up bitch over it to people who feel comfortable doing this
An important thing to bring is good pair of gloves. I see people in gardening gloves and there are a mound of ramshackle gloves at the base of sub-dome, but I would recommend a decent pair of climbing gloves. And a good traction on your shoes for the descent down to eliminate slipping.
Did this a couple of years ago and passed a guy with one arm, near the top of the cables as I was heading down. He was clipped on, which made sense, but I figured if he could do it I shouldn't crow too much myself! Even so, best walk I'll ever have.
Wow. I’ll bet. That would be impressive for anyone to climb it, but with only one arm? Cannot imagine. Moving the clip would be terrifying because you’d essentially be risking yourself each time. Your comment reminded me of when I walked my first (of 4) marathons. I had leg surgery 3 months earlier and when I was at about 21 miles, I was hitting the notorious wall (and thinking about quitting). I heard a tapping sound behind me that gradually got closer. Then a man, with one leg (the other amputated at hip level) came alongside me, walking with forearm crutches. He asked how I was doing. I was embarrassed to tell him I was struggling. He walked with me for about a mile. He said, “It’s like this. You pick ‘em up, you put ‘em down. It’s that simple”. He repeated that phrase over and over. He finally asked me if I was okay. I said, “absolutely. I’ve got it, because of you. I’ve never forgotten his words. They’ve carried me many times throughout my life. I only wish I could thank him now.
@@kathyhenderson2437 Thanks Kathy. I'm glad I'm not the only person who occasionally leaves comments to posts made 5 years earlier! Mind you, I still think about that walk - the logistics were so tenuous that allowed me to do it. If truth be told, it was only because the rangers were on strike that I could because my permit was lent to me by someone else I met the day before!
Fortunately for me, my many times up the cables came long before permits were required and also at a time before such crowding. Having spent much of my youth in Yosemite, I certainly understand the attraction.
I used the cables way back in 1979. Back then all the vertical poles were very wobbly and I remember thinking, WTF???, Yosemite officials approved this wobbly death trap cable rig??? The vertical poles look firmly attached in this vid, thank God, I didn't think I was gonna make it back in 1979.
I've done Half Dome 7 times, never with the poles up or the 2x4's bolted in as steps. If the poles are loose it doesn't mater. It's the cables that are your safety, and they ain't coming out! They remove them during the winter so they don't completely deteriorate. THey usually put them up the week before Memorial Day. We always did our HD ascent the weekend before tourist season officially opened and it became a zoo.
I was talking about the poles and 2x4s being removed. To my knowledge the cables may be up year round. I can't imagine trying to solo the route and attempting to lug up the weight of the cables.
I got to go climb that, looks like good therapy for someone who is afraid of heights like myself. I get so terrified but it doesn't keep me from doing anything and you wouldn't know by looking at me, but in my mind I would be fighting panic every second of the way! haha!
I have climbed these cables 3 times. The view from the top is the most magnificent thing I have ever experienced. I fell 165 feet rock climbing on Washington column (across Tenya canyon) in 1983. I would love to stand on the summit of Halfdome again, but I don't think it is going to happen.
The Poor Man’s Half Dome is North Dome. It’s not a very long hike from the Tioga Road and the beauty of North Dome is the spectacular view of Half Dome
At 14:20 you're almost HALF done. The other half you need to go down. Those of us who hike know going down is twice as difficult. You'll never get me up there cos there is no way I would be able to get down. Ha
I completed the climb at 61.. I hope to take my grandkids up when they turn 10:)) I didn’t enjoy the 19 miles round trip in one day nor do I like the park.. but it was a bucket list item so I’m happy
My personal opinion is that anyone who attempts to climb the face of this rock should have to be physically anchored to the cable at all times thankfully to my knowledge this hasn't happened yet but eventually someone is going to suffer some serious problems while climbing the rock and fall taking out everyone below them .as they clause a chain reaction fall it could happen because of someone having poor health or suffering from heat related stress cramps dizziness ETC. The park service should make everyone that decides to climb the face use safety rigging to secure themselves to the cable and no one should ever be allowed to descend while anyone below is climbing up most people think that they are invincible while even the best equipment rock climbers suffer deaths eventhough trained climbers are following every safety precaution the main difference between the trained climbers and the people climbing up the face unprotected is the average person doesn't have the knowledge of safety it's going to be a sad day because of stupidity .
GoPro is amazing. I was too little to go up, but my brother did. I only made it to Vernal Falls when I was about 10, born in Yosemite in 1947 at Lewis Memorial Hospital, no more live births there anymore. Janie Ross (Christensen)
I would love to climb that one day. I grew up in the countryside and climbed a lot of high and dangerous things as a kid (I'm lucky to be alive). I haven't climbed anything in years because I moved to the city. I would love to climb this and feel like a kid again.
Been to Half Dome more than 5 times, back in the days it was crowded and dangerous, no lottery or anything like that. The only fact is you MUST BE FIT, the hike alone to the base will drain most people, making it harder to be back on time to Curry Village before night time. Lottery or not, you must be fit or take your chances.
+Randy R I've done the hike 3 x's. Twice I backpacked into Little Yosemite Valley, stayed overnight and then did Half Dome the next day. The first time was in 1976 when I started at Happy Isles. Then I did it again in 2013, but started at Glacier Point. Last year, in 2014, I started at Glacier Point, walked through Little Yosemite Valley up to Half Dome, then down the Mist Trail ~19 miles, in the same day. If I do it again, I'd do it in one day like I did in 2014. I'm 66 years old with atrial fibralation. Just 'do it'!
@@williambranham6249 Not necessarily - indeed scaling Half Dome as an undead phantom with power of flight is about the ONLY EFFING WAY YOU'D EVER GET ME UP THERE...............
@@markgerrard383 Yes I have an extreme fear if heights. I lost a job as a college student when helping build houses. I couldn't walk across the second story joists. They put me on the ground and eventually off the site. I was relieved.
Did it. 1999. Sunny day just like this. I was a backpacker, and I found it easy. The rock was sticky dry and you're always holding onto cables and there's cross slats spaced all the way up. A lotta people going up and down; no one fell. It was fun, not at all terrifying. Everyone going up and down seemed relaxed, just like in this video. The coolest part? Getting to the top and then going over to the face, and getting on my stomach to inch up to the edge and looking down over the face. Now, THAT was terrifying. Why? Because the flat top angles down slightly to the edge of the face, so you feel like you're gonna slide over the edge. It took me three tries, each time getting up and looking at how slight the angle was, before I felt confident enough to inch back out and get my face out over the edge. And my reward was better than anything I expected. Why? Because I got to see climbers coming up the wall. What an awesome sight and moment that was: to have climbed the cables, be on top of Half Dome, being on my stomach peering out over the face, AND see climbers coming up the wall. 20+ yrs later, and I still vividly remember the yellow and red helmets of the climbers. Life memory...
I'm in pretty good shape, I guess. I didn't do anything special to prepare, just rode my bike & play tennis a couple of times/week. It's an ~18 mile hike r/t with an elevation climb of 4800'. Starts out at 4,000' so you need to be in enough shape to do that. The cables require a bit of upper body strength as you are effectively pulling yourself up. I recommend getting acclimated to the altitude, do some cardio, build leg strength & you'll be fine. Take lots of water, start early & take breaks

Impressive! I went up the Mist trail last week, and one of my life goals will be to climb up to half dome.
What an awesome video!.....and adventure.....thanks for sharing.
9:12 that woman looks pretty unsteady, scared me a bit
she's a bit too heavy lol
awesome.. so glad its done with a go pro. the wide angle always serves well
Awesome video! Can't wait to be there later this year!!
Looks so steep!
So glad that their strike worked out in an excellent and memorable experience for you
Zero interest being behind strangers and their unknown abilities
That whale butt coming down would be terrifying
LOL for REAL
My thoughts exactly!!
Sometimes you have to take chances live adventurously and be an alpha..its called having fun. life isn't always a safe space on twitter
@hahaimabitch1 I’m with you on that
I hiked it in '82 and '83. In those days, one could camp overnight on top. Great views both during the day and at night.
This is making the bottoms of my feet sweat. 😳
Fortunately for me, my many times up the cables came long before permits were required and also at a time before such crowding. Having spent much of my youth in Yosemite, I certainly understand the attraction.
Lane for people climbing down should be separate.
Maybe a slide that takes you all the way down.
Yeah....absalutely..
80 years ago traffic wasn't a problem.
It may look like there is enough room for two but there really isn't. Off to either side is sketchy as hell in some sections.
Best video of half dome.
Such a great video. I hope to do this some day.
Don't be fooled! I did the cables last summer and there were very wobbly.
It wasn't built by Yosemite officials. It was built during the depression, long before you, or your parents were born, most likely.
I was talking about the poles and 2x4s being removed. To my knowledge the cables may be up year round. I can't imagine trying to solo the route and attempting to lug up the weight of the cables.
@@climberbob1 the poles are sunk 5 inches deep into the rock
Thank you for posting this vid and congratulations! :)
I got to go climb that, looks like good therapy for someone who is afraid of heights like myself. I get so terrified but it doesn't keep me from doing anything and you wouldn't know by looking at me, but in my mind I would be fighting panic every second of the way! haha!
Watch this video...i can't control my heartbeat...
that looks insane, great views. rip to the young woman.
Every summer I use to take my Boy Scout troop on a five day hike through Yosemite and we would always hike to the top of half dome.
Wow! Amazing view!
Thanks for taking me with you guys! The only way I could ever see it! Awesome job!! Now you have to get down! Lol
Beautiful 🌎
That´s just amazing!
At 14:20 you're almost HALF done. The other half you need to go down. Those of us who hike know going down is twice as difficult. You'll never get me up there cos there is no way I would be able to get down. Ha
I imagine most anyone could get back down pretty quickly
I completed the climb at 61.. I hope to take my grandkids up when they turn 10:)) I didn’t enjoy the 19 miles round trip in one day nor do I like the park.. but it was a bucket list item so I’m happy
Wow !! I got so tired watching this intense video that I need to lay down on the couch. Seriously.
Several people have fallen off that thing
So what, all sports is dangerous. You probably wanna put pillows on derby cars Karen.
Never did Yosemite, but I did “sleep” in the stone hut atop Mt. Whitney one time.
Coldest night of my life in a dacron bag.
Amazing. Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Wonderful! Thanks for posting!
Not everyone can say “ I climbed the half dome “ so congratulations guys 😀
Alex Honnold climbed it from the other side without a rope once.
@@carnyzack I think we can all agree that Alex Honnold is the exception, not the rule
I'm gonna try this with my hoverboard.
weenermeat I wouldn’t, i did this with my Segway and almost died
I’ll hold your beer
Lol..record it!!
You can try, but you could risk your life?
Rascal.
I Really enjoyed this video, all I need to do now is convince my other half that we are going on a little hike next weekend.
I have heard there is a big net at the bottom. So I will give it a go!
QA LOL. There is no net. You slip and you're gone. I hiked up years ago. I thought it safe enough by keeping hands on cables. Took it slow.
I hiked it from the valley floor up! Now that's a hike!
This is one of the many things I want to do before I die.
If you do it , it will have to happen before you die, but I know what you mean.
@@williambranham6249 Ahh but at least you're here to tell the tale !!
Did it.
Would having something to clip into the cables ready for safety be overkill?
I hiked it about four in the morning, and no safety clips, by moonlight. Was a rush to say the least. Cried tears of joy.
If they make you feel more safe and comfortable, take them. Maybe when you get there you'll feel comfortable doing it without em, maybe not.
Not at all. One slip and you die. You or others.
With Murican healthcare, I'd clip on before going bankrupt or dead
I'm in pretty good shape, I guess. I didn't do anything special to prepare, just rode my bike & play tennis a couple of times/week. It's an ~18 mile hike r/t with an elevation climb of 4800'. Starts out at 4,000' so you need to be in enough shape to do that. The cables require a bit of upper body strength as you are effectively pulling yourself up. I recommend getting acclimated to the altitude, do some cardio, build leg strength & you'll be fine. Take lots of water, start early & take breaks
I feel unsafe on my bed...
Anywhere that's so common and accessible where you don't feel the need to say hello to strangers, is a tourist attraction.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks :)
Those cables were scary going down when I was 19 in 1975
