  • Despite claims that it’d lead to some sort of housing armageddon, reforming negative gearing and the capital gains tax concessions would make the system fairer, says Greg Jericho.
On this episode of Dollars & Sense, we discuss the allegations of dodgy conduct against the big supermarkets and the government’s apparent interest in negative gearing and capital gains tax reform.
Greg Jericho is Chief Economist at the Australia Institute and the Centre for Future Work and popular columnist of Grogonomics (www.theguardia...) with Guardian Australia. Each week on Dollars & Sense, Greg dives into the latest economic figures to explain what they can tell us about what’s happening in the economy, how it will impact you and where things are headed.

The government needs to get back into building public housing, the private sector have no interest in providing a service.

While I don't disagree with you, the government can't just unilaterally say everyone's house is now worth 80% of what is was yesterday. So what do you propose be done to at best significantly slow the rate of house price growth or reduce house prices?

    John Howards Negative Gearing

Greg please explain! Prior to 1985 there was NO Capital Gains Tax and negative gearing existed and houses were apparently affordable. Maybe the answer lies in the government abandoning the housing market? Greg you did not put the 50% Capital Gains Tax discount into context. In 1999 the Howard government were taxing incomes above $50000 at 48.5% a crushing rate. This forced many into negative geared properties to reduce their over sized Tax bill. Greg if as you suggest negative gearing should go as well as CGT discount then there needs to be a substantial uplift in the tax brackets to compensate.
