This actually makes me very grateful for the priesthood keys still held in the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. This illustrates how doctrine can drift over time as it probably would in our church without the keys.

For real. One crazy thing that has clearly drifted was the understanding of the nature of God and Jesus. Joseph was so clear and profound on this doctrine throughout years of his life and yet they have still strayed from that simple truth.

Very interesting interview. I learned a lot. Considering they believe in Joseph Smith's first vision, it surprises me that they believe in the trinity. It even further surprises me that they don't believe in Resurrection the core of Christianity. She infers that our belief that the church is the one true church is exclusionary, which is not true at all. It's quite the opposite. The church may be the vehicle in which God has ordained to administer saving ordinances, but ALL of God's children will have the opportunity to choose to come unto Him and be baptized by proper authority whether in this life or the next. Our view of heaven encompasses the grace of God and is more generous than any other Christian denomination. In our view, more people will make it to heaven than any other Christian denomination believes. The 3 degrees of glory give MORE opportunity for God's children to be admitted into heaven not less. His plan for his children is full of grace and mercy. The 3 degrees of glory also emphasize the importance of agency. In the end we will ultimately choose where we want to live in the eternities based on how we choose to use our agency. It's up to us. It's about agency, not hierarchy and exclusion as she infers.

They were struggling financially & to receive financial help from the universal church fund (don’t remember what it’s called) that many different Christian denominations draw from, they had to accept the credo trinitarian belief. When I visited there 20 some yrs ago, any questions were answered in very generic terms … like they gave up their beliefs that connected them to us, but hadn’t yet chosen exactly what they did believe then.

You’re a great interviewer, you have the gift of getting along with anyone and keeping things friendly and light.
    Edit:
When religion is involved, I find it very difficult to be agreeable and keep listening about it for a long time, I don’t have a long patience for that, in my mind all it goes is “I don’t believe any of that and those people are deceived”. I clearly don’t have Jared’s gift.

I’m trying to get rid of those same prideful ways myself… I struggle the most when ppl incorrectly tell me what I believe, & when I try to share what I really believe, they tell me I’m deceived & my leaders are lying to me… & right out tell me I’m going to hell. I’m grateful we’re taught to seek for truth everywhere… & that we don’t believe we’re the only ones going to “heaven.” I wonder if we shouldn’t use “having the fullness” more than using “the one true church” wouldn’t present better to the general population.

    • @greentree_
      @greentree_ Год назад +5

@@loridavis7086 I know I kinda hesitate saying that to other people because it sounds so superior. But that is the truth and I believe it, and will continue believing it till the day I die. But it really is tricky and offensive to other people, they can’t imagine there’s only one true Church because they believe themselves to be a great people doing good (and most are) in great churches. But as much as there are different ways to be saved in a kingdom of glory, there is only ONE way to reach exaltation and inherit everything that the Father has. Pres Nelson boldly said “It’s not enough to be a nice fella, you need covenants.”

@Lori, I paraphrazed, his exact words are: " *Well, the Book of Mormon refutes the mistaken impression that all you need is good works and to be a nice fella. You have to have ordinances if you're going to reach the celestial glory that God has in mind. So, there are so many wonderful people in the world who have that feeling that as long as I don't break the law and I'm polite and careful to people, then I'll, that's all I need to do, but the Book of Mormon teaches over and over again that you need to have the ordinances and of course the temple. That's why we have temples-- so that all the potential that God has in store for his children can become a fact, a reality* ." (Pres. I had no idea that RLDS had gone so astray from the original teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints. Many of these teachings are verified in the New Testament, such as the need for Baptism, and Paul's teaching of the 3 glories in Heaven. Very interesting that they have moved so much farther than even some Christian Churches from basics of Jesus Teachings, to try and fit into the World.

I can’t help but see the comparisons of the past…. It’s like the modern day is mirroring the ancient timeline. Each believing that they are right…. But when we look back we know who are the covenant people… sorry I’m not trying to offend anyone… just using the past to clearly see the present…. The similarities are uncanny
The church of Jesus Christ of later day saints = house of Israel (original covenant people restored)
Community of Christ = Catholicism and other sects that have changed the doctrine or “re” organized the original setup. ( trinity, no degrees of glory, ect)
The church of Christ = Muslim’s … a brake off that now owns the temple land…. Part of the original covenant.
Sorry I don’t mean to offend… it’s just how my brain works in seeing parallels.
Ecclesiastes 3: 15 That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

The communities of Christ is just another Christian denomination with little difference from others in doctrine and beliefs and it’s because they sold their restoration doctrine back in the 80s in order to avoid bankruptcy. They joined a larger group of churches for financial support and had to ditch a lot of their unique doctrines for that help. That is why 1/3 of the members left their church, not because of the name change. It’s truly sad what happened but that was inevitable and is just more evidence that Brigham young truly was the next Prophet after Joseph Smith. The one true church has only grown every year since the founding while all of the break off groups have shrunk if not disappeared completely.

I think you can take it or leave it in this church . The Book of Mormon. Is not their main focus . They are more like all the other Trinity church’s . I have always wonder why they or anyone thought a prophets first son would automatically be the next prophet or the one to get the double portion when it never ever happened in the Bible . If anyone can name a first born Son? Seems it never happened . Abraham did not give Ishmael that right but Isaac big thy feel they were the one chosen to be the covenant people . And Joseph in Egypt’s first born did not get it either . Nor did Issac first born twin son Esau but Jacob . The pattern of first born did not seem to happen . Even Moses was not the first born Son . So to say Joseph Smith the third should inherit it makes no sense as it does not follow the pattern . We have Joseph F Smith and Joseph Fielding Smith . Only two related . I think the interview went well and she told kind of clearly what they believe but it was different then what I thought . Seems they went completely away from the restored church . I would like to see what the temple Lot church believes .

I wish I could ask her some questions. I don't think she understands, that if people do not accept, or turn from Christ's teachings, or rebel against them, will not be in the same level as someone who tries to live by the laws and doctrine of Christ. We see the levels of people today even now, the levels of wickedness and the godless, the Satan worshipers, and casual believers who say they believe but don't follow that up with any effort...we would rather be living with people who love the Lord as we...I would imagine she would agree, if she really thought about it. However ,according to our doctrine, after death, when they have paid the price of sin, they will ultimately inherit a glory, terrestrial, telestial...and will be happy, after realizing their sins and what harm they have done. And the Celestial glory, we know only a worthy married priesthood holder can inherit a place in the highest glory in the Celestial glory. These are the only ones who will increase and inhabit other kingdoms, just as our Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother had spirit children, in another realm so will we, who have worked to achieve that level, through our ordinances, our work, our thoughts, words and intent...Do they believe in the Book of Mormon? I get from her talk, as she believes in the Trinity, you go to Heaven or you go to Hell...If you read the Book of Mormon, how can you come to this conclusion?

What about when Jesus says you need to be born of water and the spirit. To enter the kingdom of God? Do they not follow the Jesus of the Bible?

Thank you for a wonderful interview. It was interesting to hear your guest explain their current belief system. I love how you let her speak and not speak over her.

What I found interesting is how far they have moved away from our beliefs and how they are continuing this trend. Even her own children haven’t been taught things that she believed or once believed. It definitely doesn’t feel like they are an off shoot of our church anymore and it appears they will continue to move even further as older members die and their beliefs are not passed on to the future generations to learn from and develop a testimony of..

Amazing interview. I'm surprised with how much the largest branch has drifted from Restoration revelations. I'm surprised that they don't have a doctrine / church affirmation of the resurrection. Like that's not even an LDS teaching it's in the Bible that people are resurrected generally

Fascinating interview! Thanks for this. I've been to Independence and inside the sea shell temple of the Community Of Christ. Spoke with a missionary assigned there. It's a very beautiful building.
I knew they moved more toward protestant and evangelical type Christianity, but it seems they are also moving into universalism as well. She is a great speaker and I am glad that she seems to value Jesus Christ as the saviour.
    Great episode.

"We need a community" I love that. It's so true, no matter what faith you are we need to have that support of others around us to help us make it through this craziness. Was very interesting to listen to and learn more about their beliefs. Thanks again!

We had a bit of a discussion on using the term “the 1 true church.” Latter Day Saint Q&A has a good podcast on that:

Interesting how when asked about their view of the First Vision at 24:52, she says Jesus' encounter, not Joseph's in the Sacred Grove.

Really enjoyed the interview! You both were so respectful and I loved what I learned about Community of Christ. I feel like she misunderstands a lot of what the church of Jesus Christ teaches (like how she views the 3 degrees of glory, it’s pretty one sided, like she learned everything from someone who left our church or something) but she was very kind nonetheless. It’s funny how similar we feel about things for the most part.

So interesting to believe in the Book of Mormon and not believe in the name of the church...or the 3 degrees of glory which is also mentioned in the Bible..

I can certainly see how others confuse the degrees of glory if they mix up Worth and Worthy and also just not realizing that it is about the desires of your heart and what you WANT that not wanting to live or be forced to live like God means that you don’t have to AND you don’t have to suffer in hell for all eternity.

Great interview with a wonderful woman. She’s a great ambassador for the Community of Christ. It appears that many of the unique teachings /doctrine of Joseph Smith have been changed either slightly or drastically. Seems they’ve become mostly mainstream. It’s wonderful to believe the restoration is continuing. I wish them well in their efforts to bring people to a belief in Christ.
