The bowls with the cut outs are used on a buffet and they hold spoons, forks, etc. I am the proud owner of a set and have used them every time I gave a baby shower, wedding shower or a special birthday where food was b served buffet style
Those square things in the first box are microwave potholders or they are great for holding ice cream bowls and stuff like that so you hand don't get cold. I know cause I make them.
