Hey Adam I am 15 years old and you have inspired me to start collecting retro consoles now I have 15 of them and I just would like to say thanks and keep up the great work!
AdamKoralik you're very welcome. rubbing works for pretty much everything when it comes to cleaning a consoles and when it comes to getting off stickers or sticky residue I use lighter fluid, it's nice because it evaporates really fast and the sticker is basically nonexistent in seconds.
The reason why 5200s are expensive at game shops is yes, they are rare, but even more rare is finding one without problems. That sound issue is a problem. Most sellers see the $50 price and think it is standard, but that is the price of a problem-free 5200, at least currently. I wouldn't pass up a 5200 for $7, even if it powers on and you see a blank screen. The chips inside would be useful if you find another 5200 with defective parts.
I found an Atari 5200 on top of my neighbors garbage can while i was walking my dog 12 years ago. It was in the box with 2 controllers(one actually worked!) and a bunch of games and all the wires. It still had the blue plastic on the metal trim. I still have it but sadly the controller stopped working many years ago.
I did this and it only slightly improved. How long do you have to scrap the cartridge port? What’s the best substance? I used alcohol and then contact cleaner.
500th like! This will be my next cleaning task after the SNES JR. I recently picked up a two port model for $25 in it's original box, paperwork and original NFS Pacman game! Very excited to own one finally. I'm waiting on an adapter to come in so I can plug it into my TV directly, but it does power on!
Bought a 4-port 5200 a few weeks ago. I do not regret it. Its a beast and a load of fun. Though the controller is half dead. Its no exaggeration that they're flimsy.
The pcb is more of a flimsy plastic with the metal wiring running through it its easy to sever the links and the wiring also oxidises over time making them unresponsive. So you have to either open the controller and clean the contacts with windex and a qtip or get a replacment circuit. There are gold contact circuit membranes that come with new gold contact buttons that make the controllers much much better!
I already have an Atari 5200 with the two Wico Joysticks CIB. Couldn't pass up a recent Craigslist find for $40 with a bunch of games two OG Joystick's and a Wico with the Y cable. Going to follow this cleaning method to restore and test it out tonight.
Adam, those boards are more resistant to moisture than you think. I fixed an Atari 2600 that spent a week under rain water by going over the board with q tips soaked with isopropyl alcohol.
Was the RCA cable soldered into the board or did it simply plug into the board? It was hard to see on video. my 5200 is getting a lot of static on the screen and was considering replacing the RCA cable, pending it wasnt too much of a hassle, to see if it fixes the static issue...
I'll have to check mine to see if ineed a power brick or that square power attachment, refurbished controllers a must. i have a dozen games to. good video.
Thanks for the new cleaning and restoring video, Adam! Also, in the future could you make maintaining videos for the seventh generation consoles (disassembly, fixing common problems, laser cleaning)? That would be awesome. Thanks for all of the great videos, keep it up!
Just got a 4 port. Had to shop around online to get the rfu box thingy you mentioned. Got lucky with random ac adapter I had. Powers up. . . Load screen comes up. . . But glitches there. I don't have controllers either. . . But after watching your video, I have hope that I can clean it and get the games to fully load. I'm excited. Guess I'll try luck finding a working controller. 🤞 Thanks
I've ordered an Atari 5200 and I've decided to set it up to a Sony Trinitron for the time being. Because I want to see what RGB mods come out before I set it up to the RetroTink 4K, since I want to use as few adapters as possible.
Sounds like you need to replace a couple capacitors on the sound amplifier. Cap kits are a dime a dozen though. And if I recall correctly, it's only 2 or 3 to swap out.
Great video once again man. Is there any chance you could do the original model of the Xbox 360? The disk drive on mine is pretty bad, sometimes the thing won't even open.
Probably not, the seventh gen stuff is a tad more complicated than I'm comfortable with. Plus, it's also a lot less reliable. So, a simple cleaning won't exactly fix most things with those.
i have a 4 port version with the trak-ball 5200 controller and the wico 5200 joystick even have the vinyl cover. the question i have is will it work on my newer flat screen tv i have a antenna in on it haven't played it in a few years
Rust inside is a right pain to get rid of. I recently opened up my Sega Mega Drive that one of my mates gave me back when I was at school and there was a few massive rust patches on the shield. I haven't attempted to remove the rust yet but usually I find that wire brushes remove rust quite well.
My local gaming store has one of these with one controller, all the cables and maybe 5 games; all for $65 dollars. Is that a good buy (assuming it all works)?
I got my Atari 5200 on ebay in 2007 for only $40 with its original box and maunals ans everything needed and many games and with shipping cost around $100 I paid to import it to my country but nowadays the prices has gone up.
I clean PCBs all the time with Water and purple power to degrease it, works great and it's safe if you discharge the board and let it dry before plugging it in. Also to clean rusty or otherwise nasty RF shielding, I use PB blaster. I never saw the inside of a 5200, I opted to not deal with the issues of the 5200 and get an Atari 8-bit. Its the same hardware (well incredibly similar...the 5200 has slightly more ram), but you can use proper atari joysticks.
Hey, great video as always, Adam. I had a quick question though. I've checked ebay for thisa few times and can't really find a solid price. How much is an original gray model N64 worth when it comes with the original box? I have one that my dad got me at a garage sale for 25, and I'd kind of like to sell it.
N64s aren't really worth much at the moment. Their time will probably come in the next five years. Though without the games, it won't be quite as valuable. But, the box does add something to it. I'd advise waiting for now, but that's your call.
Oh I have some games, nothing like amazing but I have some and I had a follow up question, I was talking to this guy and he said he'd trade me my N64 with Dr Mario with the box for Pathway to Glory: Ikusa Island on the N-Gage. That can be like over 100 dollars(you can check ebay) but I haven't seen any sell for that yet. I know you have this game because you said you have a complete set, do you think the deal is worth it?
SondoSoft Maybe. The most it's actually SOLD for in the past 90 days on there seems to be $45. On paper, it looks good. Just depends on how much you want the game. Personally, I'd do it.
Well, the guy told me this(and I don't think he's a greedy jerk) those are international sales, It seems the North American copy is more expensive which is what I would be getting.
Also,I didn't mention his copy is factory sealed, and he would be giving me a factory sealed copy of moto gp for n-gage and a sealed copy of sonic 2 for game gear, so I think I'll do it.
So I Went To My Local Goodwill And Found One Of These For $25 Very Clean Including Nothing I Let It Go. Was It Worth It? And Could You Dry The Outer Plastic With Light Blow Drying?
Really up to you. $25 isn't bad, but not great. You could dry it that way, I wouldn't recommend it. It could warp the plastic. Air drying is fool-proof. Just takes time. How much of a rush could you really be in to play the 5200?
@@AdamKoralik How much of a rush could you really be in to play the 5200? LOL If you had an aftermarket arcade stick you would want to play the 5200. the games are great, you just need a better controller!
I really envy you Adam.. all those classic consoles.... All i even want is a Sega Saturn.. but the price of those games are nuts for that system... i would give anything to find a modded saturn.
I always leave a cartridge in all my Atari consoles because they never figured out the dust cover concept. Especially odd noting the upright orientation of their cartridge ports on their systems.
Actually just found one of these (4 port) at a local resale shop with 22 games and 2 controllers 'fully tested' for $50... my ass... Good news is - a few nights and a little will power, power supply soldering, and some cleaner later - everything is mostly functioning (my power button doesn't click on its own, so i have to pull the lid off and physically pull it up and click it to turn it off and on). If you ever get a controller - mine was DOA, but shockingly opening it up and using the pencil eraser/can of air worked wonders and it's at least 90-95% functional. Great video man - reason for my comment though - when I pulled my lid off, I had the rust/gunk on the RF shield in the exact same place as you. Almost too strange to me a total coincidence.
Are you gonna get some controller's to play it? I know you mainly collect old system's but id like to see you fail trying to play it with the really weird controller.
AdamKoralik I don't know if you ever heard about it, but those retro looking Atari flashback 2 consoles are actual Atari 2600's newly made. you can install an Atari 2600 cartridge slot in them and play the original carts in them.
from what I read they used the original diagrams and schematics when they made it. apparently it can also run 7800 and 5200 games but I'm less sure about that.
Is Windex (or Windowlene in my country) safe for cartridges? I'm pretty sure it's okay just I've seen some sources saying that it actually damages the pins in the long run. Should you just use rubbing/cleaning alcohol?
That's open to debate. 50% of people go with Windex, 50% with rubbing alcohol. I obviously prefer Windex. I find it works better and leaves less residue on the contacts. The choice ultimately is yours.
AdamKoralik Wow you sure do reply quickly, I already have Windowlene so I'm inclined to use it if it works. There are some pretty conflicting messages out there some saying it's fine and others who see it as a cardinal sin. I'm sure someone said something about perfumes in Windex being a bad things for corrosion, but I'm yet to see any form of conclusive evidence.
+AdamKoralik What are you talking about? Alcohol evaporates and leaves behind no chemicals. Who knows what is in your random Windex-like product. Some glass and surface cleaners are even oil-based.
Adam, i was thinking of converting most of my retro consoles to scart/hdmi. I was wondering if i found all the adapters to make them scart, then found a scart splitter and bought a decent scart to hdmi, would that work?
Depends on the consoles, only a few of the consoles would actually benefit from that. There's a list in the description of this video: ruclips.net/video/RS55pmLIEjA/видео.html
really windex? i figured thatd be bad for games and systems. so a while back i got a atari 2600 and some games but the cables were missing could you link me to oem cables on amazon?
The controllers never work? It worked for about 2 years with 4 ports when I had it as a kid. Today, there are easy mods for the joystick that make it work great.
@@AdamKoralik I've got 3 2600 joysticks broken within the past 12 years. I still have my rebuilt 5200 stick that has surpassed 12 years still working great in 2020. You should do your research on Best Electronics refurbished stock controllers.
Just wondering why shouldn't we use WD40? Does it ruin the console? I've heard from a few people that it works just as well as the pledge. And I've used it and had nothing bad happen to my stuff. Just wondering your thoughts?
wait an RF cable is a black RCA cable? nice i have one also yesterday i ordered a sega master system model 2 since i'm just starting to collect for the dreamcast and currently haven't ordered the console, video cable or composite video cable so later i can buy a toro, may use the sega saturn's power cable at first, i'm not going to collect for it yet and wow i quickly got carried away
No, they look similar but don't perform the same function. An additional box must be connected to the cable you see in this video to connect it via RF. If you were to connect that in to a composite port, it wouldn't do anything. I suppose it might even damage something.
I have a lot of Atari computers and I always remove the tins when cleaning the system. As for rust on the tins, I remove the rust with a brass wire wheel or whatever and then give them a shot of Aluma-blast paint. The rust is caused by dust falling on the tins and adsorbing moisture. The video cable should pull out of the motherboard.
AdamKoralik i did, but theres that rattling noise in mine, and me and my friend opened the thing up and it was a little dirty and we cleaned it. My games for it, super street fighter 2 and spiderman, work and i dont know if its my system or not. Do you hve a model one genesis cleaning video? If so can you give me a link to the video?
lucarioluxray29 I don't have that particular video, no. But there isn't much to it. The primary thing is properly cleaning the cartridge contacts and the games. And I don't mean just blowing on the games, never do that.
@@AdamKoralik cool. I think the atari 5200 is a way underrated system. Its graphics were great sound was good and very innovative for the time. It was poor build quality and a cheap board for the controller that doomed it. was backwards compatible that would have helped like the 7800
I had bought a 4 port one recently that came with 2 controllers and no power cord for $30. But at the time, I did not realize I needed the converter box to even use it. So I bought one boxed for 10 bucks, plugged it in, and the converter box basically started on fire. Opened the box and there were broken solder points everywhere. Got incredibly pissed and returned the system. Should have kept it. Apparently, there is a easy solder mod that allows you to use a regular 5200 power cord and completely avoid the converter box. Oh well, at least the $30 then went to a awesome 7800!
For black systems such as this, I would suggest using VHT vinyl dye to restore them. The individual who gave you your 'ultimate Dreamcast' well he painted it with VHT (used it myself when I painted one of my Dreamcasts black). Its not a spray paint per se in that the paint sits on top as a layer- rather it bonds with the existing paint changing its composition so to speak. Obviously it being the winter painting outdoors is a big no no but its something you may want to consider for the future. A 5200 would be easy to do- mask off that metal part and the process would take no more than five minutes. The results are like no other and put any spray paint job to shame.
AdamKoralik No problem. This stuff has been around for a while used exclusively by car enthusiasts. But a few daring individuals found out that this is the closet thing you can get to factory restoration of your system. As you have such a piece in your possession you can attest. Because the finish looks no different than the black paint Sega used in the past.
I'd say he's more of a collector than a gamer because he doesn't support digital or PC gaming. There are a ton of legendary franchises, especially RTS's that are PC exclusives and innovative indie titles only obtainable digitally that he probably will never experience, a 'true gamer' enjoys and supports great games whatever the platform or mode of delivery.
tsangpogorge So because I don't do things the way you want me to I don't qualify? Thanks. An argument could be made that by your definition unless you own every piece of gaming tech, ever, and have tried them all, you too don't meet the gamer definition. Nor would....anyone. Gaming requires that you pick your battles. I can't get in to PC gaming because of my lack of interest for their method of delivery, but also because it is impractical to invest financially in that as well as what I'm passionate about. I don't have the money or time to experience EVERYTHING. I'm willing to bet you don't either. But if you do, I bow to you, the lone gamer on Earth.
You keep saying the controllers never work. That's false if you refurbish them with Rev 9 circuits and either get the new carbon or gold buttons or use foil tape.
Adam, two port is better in some respects, but a few games don't work on it (Pitfall, Mountain King, K-Razy Shootout). You'd have to swap a bios chip with a 4port. Recommend the Atarimax SD Ultimate flash cart though, it's expensive but you can play close to 200 roms (5200 released, unreleased, Atari 8-bit user conversions).
the 2 disk are for color calibration and to calibrate the controller. ONLY callibrate if all joysticks do not work right. example if all drift to the left. bye turning the wheel you can set it to be "centered" I have fixed and repaird a lot of these units its not hard really
You mean an adapter right? The Genesis controller port is the same as the 2600 and 7800, but different than the 5200. The 5200 uses similar ports to that of the Neo Geo AES.
Not to sound like a dick or anything but you do know you could use a regular household fan to dry your things a lot quicker right? You could just prop them up front of the fan or put them in a box with the fan blowing into it, both would do the trick and save you a ton of time in the long run. I've used this method for many things, from automotive repairs like fixing headlights that fog up inside and k&n filter cleaning to painting plastic components.
I got this free in really good condition Edit: mine doesn’t have those clips that hold the cable on the bottom, but it’s the same version, the one with two controller ports
GUESS WHAT GUYS. I still have my Atari 5200 from the 1980's. I am glad I kept mine. To me its a collector item. I wouldn't waste my time trying to play it when I can to Atari game online and play for free.
Interesting fact about the 5200 the prototype controllers wprked flawlessly but they changed the design for manufacturing costs and the controllers barely worked.
Finally, a way to clean this giant wedge I use to hold my door open!
Huzzah!

The ports are different. That trick only works for Atari 2600 and 7800.
Soo did u ever anwser all ur AMA questions? Cause I didn't get a response yet
What did you ask? I went through and answered everything I saw.
I'm glad you got it running. I'm still on the endless hunt for a controller. :/
Is isopropyl alcohol a bad substitute for windex?
I find it to not work as well, and to leave more of a residue. But it'll work.
Are you gonna get some controller's to play it? I know you mainly collect old system's but id like to see you fail trying to play it with the really weird controller.
I'd like to, but finding functional ones is borderline impossible.
AdamKoralik I don't know if you ever heard about it, but those retro looking Atari flashback 2 consoles are actual Atari 2600's newly made. you can install an Atari 2600 cartridge slot in them and play the original carts in them.
Yep, that's the one clone console I actually want for exactly that reason.
from what I read they used the original diagrams and schematics when they made it. apparently it can also run 7800 and 5200 games but I'm less sure about that.
Really good video again man they really help me in fixing consloes and your friend list is full for the xbox 360 anyway really good vid
Is it? I never really check it. I just accept any invites that come.
Is there a way you can use a Jaguar controller?
Not that I'm aware of.
AdamKoralik
Wow you sure do reply quickly,
I already have Windowlene so I'm inclined to use it if it works.
There's a list in the description of this video:
ruclips.net/video/RS55pmLIEjA/видео.html
AdamKoralik so if i used the method i said with the consoles you confirmed, it should theoretically work?
Matthew Zepess
Yeah, that's what I do.
AdamKoralik thanks
really windex?
i figured thatd be bad for games and systems.
so a while back i got a atari 2600 and some games but the cables were missing could you link me to oem cables on amazon?
Nope, seems to work perfectly every time.
What cables are you referring to?
The controllers never work? It worked for about 2 years with 4 ports when I had it as a kid. Today, there are easy mods for the joystick that make it work great.
You'd be the rare exception then.
@@AdamKoralik Rare exception for the controllers to work today?
Correct.
@@AdamKoralik I've got 3 2600 joysticks broken within the past 12 years. I still have my rebuilt 5200 stick that has surpassed 12 years still working great in 2020. You should do your research on Best Electronics refurbished stock controllers.
Adam knows the AVGN Cool
Can you make a cleaning wii video
Just wondering why shouldn't we use WD40? Does it ruin the console? I've heard from a few people that it works just as well as the pledge. And I've used it and had nothing bad happen to my stuff. Just wondering your thoughts?
Personally, I made the switch because Pledge dries faster and smells nicer.
$7! Wow! I got my from eBay last week for $9 (winning bid) but with $35 shipping cost. And it comes with a power supply.
my 5200 has some heavy plastic damage to it, do you have any recommendations for repairing that ?
Buy another old system for parts
that atari 5200 case is perfect for neogeo mvs pcb
wait an RF cable is a black RCA cable? nice i have one also yesterday i ordered a sega master system model 2 since i'm just starting to collect for the dreamcast and currently haven't ordered the console, video cable or composite video cable so later i can buy a toro, may use the sega saturn's power cable at first, i'm not going to collect for it yet and wow i quickly got carried away
No, they look similar but don't perform the same function. An additional box must be connected to the cable you see in this video to connect it via RF.
If you were to connect that in to a composite port, it wouldn't do anything. I suppose it might even damage something.
k, i didn't know where to plug it in and wouldn't of plugged it into a composite port just because it's a RCA cable, is the box called a RF modulator?
I have a lot of Atari computers and I always remove the tins when cleaning the system. As for rust on the tins, I remove the rust with a brass wire wheel or whatever and then give them a shot of Aluma-blast paint. The rust is caused by dust falling on the tins and adsorbing moisture.
The video cable should pull out of the motherboard.
Hey Adam I have a question on my genesis model 1, my genesis cables aren't working. Do you have any idea what it is?
You'll have to be a lot more specific than that.
AdamKoralik whenever i plug in my av cables for my genesis, they dont work but my genesis turns on, do you have any idea whats wrong?
lucarioluxray29
More likely than not, the game/console is just dirty and needs to be cleaned.
If so can you give me a link to the video?
lucarioluxray29
I don't have that particular video, no. But there isn't much to it. The primary thing is properly cleaning the cartridge contacts and the games. And I don't mean just blowing on the games, never do that.
how does the rf cable go into the tv, do you need something else. before anyone says anything I own the 2 controller port not the 4 controller port
Apparently there's a switch box that the RF cable goes into. Within that same switchbox is where you plug the power jack
I have 2 5200s the controllers are an easy fix if you know how. once fixed they work good.
I did a video on that actually.
@@AdamKoralik cool. I think the atari 5200 is a way underrated system. Its graphics were great sound was good and very innovative for the time. It was poor build quality and a cheap board for the controller that doomed it. was backwards compatible that would have helped like the 7800
I'm a benefactor of this video. Thank you! We can play normal now
...wut
@@AdamKoralik thanks for this video . We fixed our joystick problem
Oh, good. Enjoy!
Get a controller i have never seen a 5200 before and would like to here your opinion.
No easy task, 5200 controllers are notorious for never working.
Oh well, at least the $30 then went to a awesome 7800!
i got one missing the stupid power thing/ input. and the original box
Thanks for the tip. :D
AdamKoralik
No problem. This stuff has been around for a while used exclusively by car enthusiasts.
But a few daring individuals found out that this is the closet thing you can get to factory restoration of your system.
As you have such a piece in your possession you can attest. Because the finish looks no different than the black paint Sega used in the past.
great video you're a true gamer unlike most frauds on the youtubes
I'd say he's more of a collector than a gamer because he doesn't support digital or PC gaming. There are a ton of legendary franchises, especially RTS's that are PC exclusives and innovative indie titles only obtainable digitally that he probably will never experience, a 'true gamer' enjoys and supports great games whatever the platform or mode of delivery.
Thanks.
tsangpogorge So because I don't do things the way you want me to I don't qualify?
Shenmue remix from OG Remix in the intro!
Yep.
I just turned when you get out mr cleans magic eraser into a drinking game this time ;p
How did that pan out?
AdamKoralik
one shot when you did basically
Power supply are easy to get 9v 2 amp and my old NES power supply worked. The DC power one.
You keep saying the controllers never work. That's false if you refurbish them with Rev 9 circuits and either get the new carbon or gold buttons or use foil tape.
You could just rub the mold with a metal sponge (or how is called. Aluminium sponge?).
Atari consoles rule
Adam, two port is better in some respects, but a few games don't work on it (Pitfall, Mountain King, K-Razy Shootout). You'd have to swap a bios chip with a 4port. Recommend the Atarimax SD Ultimate flash cart though, it's expensive but you can play close to 200 roms (5200 released, unreleased, Atari 8-bit user conversions).
Can't say I knew that. Thanks! Though without a controller, it makes little difference.
the 2 disk are for color calibration and to calibrate the controller. ONLY callibrate if all joysticks do not work right. example if all drift to the left. bye turning the wheel you can set it to be "centered" I have fixed and repaird a lot of these units its not hard really
Why not put the shell inthe dishwasher and then buff the shell
I suppose you could.
If it needs a 8 pin connector then you can use a Genesis controller. Strange I know but it works.
You mean an adapter right? The Genesis controller port is the same as the 2600 and 7800, but different than the 5200. The 5200 uses similar ports to that of the Neo Geo AES.
I have had a 5200 in a box for two years now, finding the power supply and controller's has been impossible.
I got this free in really good condition
Edit: mine doesn’t have those clips that hold the cable on the bottom, but it’s the same version, the one with two controller ports
That's really unfortunate. :(
