100% go for the fat separator! I was not making my own broth from scraps of veggies and bones (raw and/or cooked) because it was such a pain separating the fat. But once I had my separator, I was no longer wasting the scraps and my holiday turkey gravy came together MUCH faster and better. But also, of course, I use it for cooking the less-expensive cuts of beef or pork roasts to separate all that fat. Then you are left with just the flavorful cooking liquid which you can add back incrementally to your desired texture.
I think its that technically, however, in the USA I always hear people call the beef one shephards pie. Idk why lol. Even tho I know that it's technically a cottage pie, I still call it shepherds. 🤷♀️ we're ass backwards over here 😂😂
Yes, I have a fat separator. I actually got it years ago for a Christmas gift and I use it every Thanksgiving and Christmas to remove the fat from my turkey broth before I make the gravy. It has a little plug that goes into the spout. You pull that out after you put all the broth into the cup and then all the broth comes out of the spout and the fat stays in the cup. I think it's worth it to invest in one. They don't cost that much at all.
Hi Kristen! Line the bottom of your meat loaf pan with light bread, then put the meatloaf on top. The bread will soak up the grease that cooks out of the ground beef!!
When it comes to the fat from a pot roast or even when I make stock/broth I put it in the fridge. So with the pot roast I’d go ahead and serve it for dinner. When it’s time to put the left overs away I’ll strain it (same with stock/broth) to separate the liquids. Put in the fridge and next morning scrape away the fat layer. Then, I take a fine mesh strainer and pour the liquid into another container. This gets the smaller pieces.
I love making a beef stew with large pieces of meat and vegetables. It’s a make ahead meal. The flavors develop overnight. I made this to take out of town our hotel had a small kitchen I reheated it we had some really nice bread and some wine. We ate on the patio overlooking the mountains. One of the neighbors dogs wanted to be friends with us. I bet he was hoping for some scraps.
I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel! Seeing your cooking videos or lunch box ideas has helped me get motivated in cooking..been tired of the same ol recipes lol keep up the good work!
Great video - although re: your shepherds pie it's actually a cottage pie :) Shepherd's pie is made with Lamb and Cottage pie is with beef. My top tip is to use your fork to make lines/grid through the mash and then they go crispy in the oven. Adds a nice texture to the dish.
My vegetable soup is a lot like your but I use frozen veggies. I love the V8 and the cabbage makes the soup in my opinion. The roast beef with potatoes, gravy plus we toast the bread. We call it a Kentucky brown. Everything looks delicious! Thanks for sharing!
I really appreciate these viseos. As much as I love watching your weekly content, living in Australia, this video is so much more relevant to me as it is now Autumn. Thank you for these more season specic ones.
Kristen this came at the perfect time! We have the grandkids 13&15 coming for 2 weeks next week and I was just gonna sit down tonight and make my Oct meal plan and grocery list for the kids visit!! They will love all of these! I will add Chili, fry bread tacos(their favorite) fried shrimp and grits and that should be just fine!! Oh and I just made your vegetable soup last night…that’s our 3yo granddaughters favorite thing to eat, so I make that (with her help of course) every week when she comes and send her home with enough to have a few days at home!! Thanks again so much sweetie for sharing!! I’m 65 and have always been a fairly good cook but have been watching you for years and have learned so much and added so many good recipes to our favorites!!💕🥰🥰💕
Everything looked so good especially the meatloaf. To me there is nothing better than day old meatloaf sandwich on fresh bread. Definitely making a meatloaf this weekend! Thanks for the great ideas. Hope you have a great rest of the week! ❤
I make my vegetable beef soup the same way. I grew up eating it in cold months. Still love it, and I make sure to have some canned up for a quick, tasty lunch.
yum !!! all of these meals looked so good!!! now when it comes to the meatloaf, there is always a ton of grease , i use a turkey baster to drain the grease , and put in a tinfoil bowl i made let it set up and then close the tinfoil and in the trash it goes, it seems to work well for me , hope that helps rather then using a paper towel on the meat ...... but that potato soup!!! oh my , just love a good bowl of it !!!
Omgggggg! I didn’t know rolls were so EASY!!!!! and I didn’t know that the attachment I have for my kitchen aid mixer is for dough loll. And I can not WAIT to make that potato soup. THANK YOU so much for this video!
I’m in Southeastern Kentucky and we call that sandwich a Manhattan. We use two slices of bread and slice the sandwich diagonally sand our the mashed potatoes in the middle!
I have a fat separator and it works really well! The fat goes to the top and all the good juices for gravy come out the bottom when you squeeze the handle.
Oh my goodness, you made me so hungry. Everything looks delicious. I can't wait to try some of your delicious recipes. My potato soup I always put ham in. I love soups like you do, yummy!! Happy cooking. Keep up the awesome videos. I'm in Maryland, your accent is so cool.
Yay! I always check for a new video in Saturdays. So happy to see you! It’s still hot and sticky in south Florida but we just keep the AC on low and eat all the fall stuff anyway 😂😂
For the chuck roast. I make a large one the day before put in the fridge. All of the grease harden on top just take it off. When I do a roast the next meal is beef stew. after that it is hash. I would add your recipe to the mix. It would fit in nice.
These all look great! I love almost any kind of soup in the Fall,( almost always from scratch) but I also like homemade spaghetti sauce, casseroles, my easy lasagna recipe,( no cottage cheese or allowed), made with sweet Italian sausage and ricotta cheese! I am definitely going to try your roll recipe! Thanx for sharing!
I have been binge watching your videos for weeks. We definitely have similar cooking styles. One of my favorite things about you is that you admit when you make a mistake or when something doesn’t turn out quite right and don’t edit it out to try to look perfect.
We call that an open face roast beef sandwich. I make mine with a chuck roast, a packet of beefy onion soup mix, and a can of Dr Pepper. Then after I shred the meat I mix the brown gravy into the crock pot with the meat and the cooking liquid and let it cook together while I make the mashed potatoes and other sides. It’s sooooo good!
If you place a few slices of bread on top of the meatloaf while it’s cooking, it absorbs most of the grease. Then just remove and add your glaze. Great way to use up the crusts that no one uses!
Shepherds pie made with beef is called Cottage pie. It looks great though. I grew up with my Scottish stepdad making it with lamb which is also real good!
Every one of these recipes look delicious! Usually when I watch a video like this there is at least one thing I don't like but I liked every one of these!
I love that pot that you made the chicken chili in! My mama used to have a whole set of those pots back when I was a kid. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and everything she has is coming back in style. Love to see it!
I use V8 juice in my vegetable beef soup as well. Yummy and so easy. We use frozen veggies. I make my own veggie blend and put it in a reusable bag in the freezer so it is ready to put together quickly. I use onions, carrots, celery, Lima beans, corn, green beans and potatoes.
I'm making the beef and veggie soup tonight for the family, except I'm using roast instead of ground beef cuz the family won't eat ground meat in a soup. I'm very excited to try it 🥰🥰
I always cook my pot roast overnight while we sleep. In the morning i refrigerate it. The excess greased gets hard and I can break it up and easily remove it. I then shred it and reheat it at dinner time in a skillet with the juices and gravy. This way it gets rid of all the grease.
Something I started doing as a teenager.... When needing to drain grease out of burger, I move all the meat/veggies to one side. I then tilt the pan slightly so the grease separates from the meat. (I usually use a can of corn or a seasoning bottle to rest the pan handle on while the grease pools.) I then line a coffee mug with foil, then I take my trusty baster and use it to suck the grease up, and rather than basting my meat, I squirt the grease in the mug. Just have to make sure to keep it pointed down, cause the hot grease will shoot out if its tipped up. Once I can't get anymore with the baster, I use a papertowel, but its never more than 1. Once im done with the paper towel, I put it in the mug also. I wait for it to cool a bit, then wrap up the open end of the foil, and discard. I also will use an empty can in place of the mug and foil when available. Dont know if this helps anyone. Just thought id share.
I love all these recipes which my family is going to love. My fall meals I make Homemade beef stew with a secret ingredient , Chicken and noodles, Chili , Potato soup. 😀
I shouldnt watch this on an empty stomach should i, i feel like ordering a shop and cooking all of the dinners 🤣 i will be trying all of your recipes they look amazing! When you said Shepards Pie im from the UK this is our comfort food, i didnt realise Americans knew this recipe? Thank you so much for your videos my kids eat a lot of what you cook! ❤ x
I'm a soup person, too. Everything from regular old chicken noodle to chili finds it's way to my fall bowl.
I’m from the UK, and here a Shepherds pie is made with Lamb mince, and a ‘Cottage pie’ is made with Beef mince. Both lovely xx
Thank you for that knowledge!! Hello from Pensacola Beach,Florida ❤
It’s that way here in Texas too.

Can't wait for your Halloween meals 👻 🧹 🎃
I'm from the UK. we call it cottage pie when it's made with beef and shepards pie when it's made with lamb. Yours looks delicious
I think its that technically, however, in the USA I always hear people call the beef one shephards pie. Idk why lol. Even tho I know that it's technically a cottage pie, I still call it shepherds. 🤷♀️ we're ass backwards over here 😂😂
i am on a strict diet right now, and im foaming at the mouth over that roast beef sandwich
How has it never occurred to me to use V-8 in soup? Great tip!
I use the spicy hot V-8 in my taco soup to add heat

Yes to the fat separator
Hi Kristen!
Line the bottom of your meat loaf pan with light bread, then put the meatloaf on top. The bread will soak up the grease that cooks out of the ground beef!!
I use a turkey baster to suck up the extra grease.
Or you can get lower fat content ground meat. I mix turkey and beef together.
Oh my goodness! Everything looks amazing, but girl that soup looks sooo good! I love ur videos, we cook the same!
Thank you so much! ❤
@@KristinStepp yes ma'am, I'm always hungry after watching 😂 and I told my mom to watch also, I told her she would love ur videos too!

That Shepard pie looks good with the mash potatoes made the right way without mayo or miracle whip. Sour cream is alright in my books
YUMMY 😋 can't wait to try all of them.
The fat separator measuring cups are amazing. I use mine all the time!
I’m definitely ordering then! ❤️

I make my vegetable beef soup the same way. I grew up eating it in cold months. Still love it, and I make sure to have some canned up for a quick, tasty lunch.
Hi there! I wanted to comment about the fat separator. We have one and use is when we make Boston butts. It works magic!! I would totally recommend!
I've been absent off of YT for a while but I'm so happy to watch your videos again!!
I always add sour cream to my mashed potatoes, so good!

Love Shepards pie, but learned after visiting the UK that the potato layer is much thinner. Like meat mix to potato ratio.
I love Hamburger soup (veggie soup with ground chuck).Goolosh. and also A new favorite. Taco soup.
Also if there are left overs. They are so much better the next day for lunch.
We call it the same thing...an open faced roast beef sandwich! Only difference is we toast the bread!
