  • A small Staffodshire town on the edge of one of the most precious areas of beautiful countryside in Britain. Cannock founded on the rich deposits of coal once extensively mined locally, had a close and proud sense of community. This was manifest during celebrations commemorating the Queen's Silver Jubilee, July 1977. The highlight was a visit by Price Charles, the town looked stunning with all the bunting and almost every shop taking part in a colourful best dressed floral window display competition. Following the royal visit there were marching brass bands and dance troops, a carnival of vintage and steam vehicles, a parade of floral floats and a funfair.
For the small Staffordshire town this must have been its finest hour! An absolute credit to the organizers in particular Mr. R. Dyer.
This is a condensed version of the official commemorative video.

What a spotless town Cannock was.
I went last Saturday and what a shock to the system it was. Empty shops and a deserted shopping precinct. The people had soulless hollow faces. I shall never return.

Thanks for sharing - I was on the Cannock Brownies float but unfortunately couldn't find it on the footage. We were dressed as nursery rhyme characters and the float was a trolley used on the market.

Hi Jayne Anne. I’m enjoying this I remember the queens silver jubilee very well. She visited my city of Wakefield in July of that year. I’m loving looking at the pictures from that time. By the way I’ve been looking up my family tree and I’ve learned that my grandfather was born in Burslem . Thanks once again Jayne Anne. X

I think many of us can recall that year Freddy. It was like a mile post and people seemed more united then. The Prince seemed delighted with the whole thing but didn't stay very long but the fun and games went on. This was once a lovely rural town on the edge of one of the most beautiful areas of natural beauty in the country. It still has some of its charm. I'm very fond of Staffordshire and know Burslem in the Potteries. You will be familiar with Arnold Bennett of the Five Towns ... or is it six? Thanks Freddy. Jayne Anne

Enjoyed this - bought back many memories. We lived the Festival for 2 years as my dad was one of the 5 person organising committee - chaired by Ken Thomas, not Mr R Dyer (by which I think they mean Mr D Dyer - a member of the team but not chair

What negative depressing comments, it still is a small town on the Edge of the Chase, the centres the same, they just altered the roads. I live in Hednesford, it’s great, much better than it was then

OMg watching this made realise how much or little Cannock has changed. Seeing some of the old shops and guessing what they are now. Also the layout of cannock now as to what it was.

By the way, thank you so much for ALL the videos you've put on here, the classical / light classical ones (Delius especially) and all the ones relating to the Midlands. All just brilliant. Take care - Roy x

@@roypage6271 Did you know Mr. R Dyer? I think he had a son dressed as a bee too. There's a special place in my heart for Cannock. Lived for a short time in Wolverhampton Road.
Thank you so much for the lovely positive comments Roy, it makes this so worthwhile.

Yes. I think his son was named Oliver and was in the same class as ours. A small world isn't it. We're at Shoal Hill not far from the "Tavern" xx

Roy Page Old Penkridge Road area. Got caught 'speeding' along that road just before the 60 mph de-restriction sign. 35 mph. Penalty and a fine as result. What a lovely area Shoal Hill best when the heather is in bloom. Walked there many times and through Huntington and Dog in Tree onto the chase or towards Cocksparrow lane and Littleton pit. Cannock Chase has been an inspiration to me through many ups and downs. Cannock had a strong community spirit founded on mining. Yet then it still had that safe, leafy rural atmosphere. Thanks Roy, great to share this with you. Jayne Anne xx

It has been over a decade since my move to Yorkshire.
I have seen rapid change never expected in my life time.
Sad, but not for the better I fear.... likewise and earlier from a home in a 'nice' corner of what was once Staffordshire, now a part of the West Midlands conurbation a sprawling mess of urbanization.
Now the changes are happening here, there and everywhere at an alarming rate, not good for mankind or Mother Nature! B.... SAD... This makes me very thoughtful and nostalgic.

@@feline1104I hatexsay this but the next move might be away from the UK I've grown to hate what I'm witnessing here. I understand things have to change but some places are getting unrecognisable and beat down. Walsall was the most shocking recently for me. It was ok in just the 90's but my God what a hole it's become !

In the crowds would be a few born in the late 1800s, and plenty of people who were young adults or children during WWII. And a few viewers born in this year - say February.
