Dude. You're such a good teacher. Seriously, teaching is an art in and of itself and I feel like you're an absolute MASTER at it. It's amazing how you can deliver such succinct, well-informed, content in such a fun way. I'm floored.
And a comedian too! He’s an genius! Who can make something like music producing funny? Takes real humor lol!
I couldn't have said that better.
I feel like I'm a child when watching your video.
Best and quickest way to learn and understand lol
I feel like he's an idiot when I seen his intro.
Edit: but he has technique. He's a cool dude.
I did too until he yelled “whAT the FUCK!!”
thats good
"Onions have layers, but so do beats."
Someone give this man a cookie, because that's brilliant.

1:15 that's how I feel every time I'm mixing
uSe yOuR eArS
true! mixing is a fucking nightmare
In all seriousness, this channel inspires me to keep making music. Thanks, Underbelly.
I subscribed because you zoomed when using the EQ . That attention to detail was what i was looking for , Thank You!
a show with igloogost!?!? thats crazy.
Dude and shades, nutty lineup
This actually really helps you understand mixing without the jargon. Thank you for the onion reference!!
The genuine smile after casually insulting us always gives me just enough inspiration to keep going
Synth Layering
------
Round Tones Dull and Soft , good for foundation
-Sawish for upfront layer.
-Turn up octaves to help layers, turn up the sync or proccess a layer differently to make it stand out more
-Cut extra frequencies not helping the layer.
Kick Layering:
-Again make each sound play a role.
You are so UNDERRATED.
Thanks for the FREE and HIGH QUALITY education.
"I'm gunna eat onions all day today and cry about it" 😂 😂 😂 😂✊✊🔥🔥🎤
Oh wowsers
You should definitely finish cooking up a track from these onions.
Fabulous! "Onions have layers... But so do Beats!!" Had me dying. had to watch it over and over again

Another dope vid, big ups on that gig..lineup looks dope and SHADES is wild
Thanks for sharing. Great insight and distributed in such an easily digestible way!
Why have I just found your stuff it's so informative/fun to watch omg
I just noticed that I didn't subscribe to this channel, so I didn't suck at producing. But now, I do.
this video is actually more about sound design than mixing down
can't believe you played a show with iglooghost (my fav producer) you are a legend. i still suck at mixing-- but you give me hope. now if only derek could get his shit together..
Whenever he says "Ok, so check it," I always thing he's saying "Ok, suit jacket."
In your video, where you mixdown your individual tracks to audio, to start mixing a creatively finished song, you turn off the EQs and some other effects first and I get why, I think. In it you say, that if the respective effect is integral to the sound, you let it on for that process. So in this case for the EQ'd layers I recon you would not turn off the EQs on the layers, cause they are part of the sound of the instrument. Is that correct? Thanks, I love your content and the way you present it :-)
great..learnt new stuff.m a sucker in layering instruments..but yo showd some good phylosopy right here..
"I'm gonna eat onions all day today, I'm going to cry about it"
This is a very important lesson of sound design and to get distinct sounds.
PD: I would love a show about anything by underbelly. Like cooking or something, just imagine it.
Super helpful. Thanks!
1:30 this scene actually shocked me for me underestimating capabilities of layering, I put a shocking face for sure😂😂
nice vid as always, just a tip, you can layer multiple kicks in the same slot in the rack, just cmd+drag in it.
*cntrl
thank you for all the nice tutorials bro!!
I didnt realize beets had layers. This my favorite cooking channel!
Wowzers. Even I start to make sense of this.
You crack me up man. Great work! Have a wicked gig. Gotta get you to UK for a gig sometime!
''oh wowzers'' fucking lol'ed fairly hard
That whistle at the very start nearly deaded me
I really appreciate this tutorial man!
These videos are a really great way of teaching ableton thanks :)
*checks it*
Thanks for the tips gonna add this to my repertoire.
With captions on, he said,
"Onions have layers, so do beets."
Lol. I thought that was funny.
In video #1 before you bounced all the audio, you turned off all the EQing effects on all tracks. For layered tracks like these, would you still turn of the EQing before bouncing the audio?
Superb!!!
Shades & igloo & underbelly. happy for you man. thanks for the vids
dude you gotta drop this song its fire
Take a shot every time he says “wowzers”
Great topic! Could you do one on how to utilize the other forms of eq in regards to layering? (Shelf, Bell, etc)
Hahaha omfg This series of tutorials is very good hahahaha greetings from Spain!
Dude, your videos are great!!!
perfect layering , thanks
🤗😭😏
This is amazing! Wowzers
I'm a bit confused. Episode 1 you mentioned to convert everything to audio files, but here it seems you're doing the mixing/ eq to midi files like the drum rack. Shall we be applying these eq elements before or after converting the track to individual audio tracks?
So that's the reason why my beats make me cry
I learned everything I needed in the intro. Bye.
That hit me in the feels
“Onions have layers but so do beats...” wise words 🧐 🤔
Love the "NOT ASS favorite"
Dope tutorials!!!
You maniac, i love your videos !!
Arigato, Underbelly-san!
*takes a bow*
I do suck at layering, this is perfect
Good stuff bro, on point subjects, well though, well explained and fun to watch. Would analog or semi-analog processing improve significantly the sound?
Guear or not understanding the concept behind mixing is what must be learned so thanks.
shades definitely is music for my underbelly
What does sync on the wavetables mean? Is it Random phase? The beat tastes really good btw!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillator_sync
Johnny Moser Wow thank you, never heard of that.
The most famous osc sync song: ruclips.net/video/ExYsh1W22Wo/видео.html
Oh wowsers, this is so funny but so didactic at the same time, thank u for this
whoa. a show with igloo. that's fuckin crazy. good luck, dude!
I need those tickets!!!!
fun and helpful. thanks
I wasnt ready to hear him swear. legit scared me lol
1:17 i didn't expect him to cuss like that much hahahaha
LMAO, your personality is fantastic!
bass sounds like dedmau5 - opens SERUM - now i see why. awesom video man, please keep doing these
Yeah. You're pretty much the only guy on RUclips I depend on to explain this stuff properly. I mean, you know what's better than a 303 baseline? 3 X 303 bass lines. Now how the hell am I going to layer that? I'm just going to do it.
You mean I can put different elements in my music that complement each other? That's crazy! OMG Mind = Blown.
Hope your show went well
Playing with Shades as in Eprom and Alix Perez? Make some of that shit in one of your videos. That shit is dope, thx Dad.
A condescending arrogant misfit. Definitely my type of person! You really know your peppers NO. tomatoes NO.. ONIONS, that's it I meant onions!! Thanks for this set of videos. Thoroughly enjoyable and I learned something too!
so wholesome
Best tutorials ever...
Hey Dude, this is so cool! Thank you for making this video man!🔥
Would you make some layering technique production in a style of radiohead especially on their synths, texture, ambience production?
I don't understand where the "layers" come from? Do I have to dublicate every track and layer it manually?
omg dude do you have a full version of this song somewhere??? sounds sooo dope
wish i couldve caught u with shades man that woudlve been epic hahah
"onions have layers but,so do beats~poet underbelly"
hey Underbelly, got a question...So when I exported the tracks for mixing, I turned off all the effects and automation applied to the tracks then I converted it. Loading back those track in the arrangement view for mixing, how do bring those effects and automation back or don't i need them back??????
this is kind of an old comment but to anyone wondering. maybe u do now but 3 years u didnt quite get it. There are two things, 1. sound design. 2. Mixing. So mixing is stuff like cutting some hertz in eq, stereo shaping, gain staging, sidechaining, gluing things together. With underbellys method, you dont do mixing while producing or doing sound design, dont do any automation when producing or any kind of reverb effects and such, thats mixing most of the time. Now, sound design on the other hand, DONT TURN OFF THOSE EFFECTS, if you put a phaser with distortion on a sound and it will make a unique sound, those effects are what makes the sound, or you have a bass synth loop and you automate the pitch envelope so it creates some kind of vowel, you dont turn that off during exporting!! because without those effects and automation, its not that sound anymore and when u export it turned off, u will basically be doing sound design in a mixing stage. Now underbellys guides are really nice, but there is nothing wrong not bouncing anything and just do mixing and stuff while producing, what underbelly said, its really good for begginers because they tend to lose focus on producing and end up mixing on a kick drum for hours and all the ideas will go away, so its advisable to quickly make an arrengement and then do mixing.
@@syokiofficial very well said.
I was turned off by the sarcastic tone of these videos initially, even though I know it's semi-tongue in cheek. But anyway I've continued to watch 'em and I thought this one, in particular, was pretty helpful. Thank you.
Midnight oil burnin'?
madpie109 the guy is very annoying bt lot of useful tips ....I keep coming back dnt mind him jst take the info .
How is it annoying? I find him hilarious
SHAUN MAQ I think his idea, is don’t take it seriously and don’t over complicate. Keep it simple.
@@Azza.10 the synth is literally called onion
why would you take it seriously?
You don't always need to layer 7 doubled guitar tracks...no wait, yes you do.
Thanks sir!
Do a video on serum?
2:01 i didn't know sinks sounded that good
congrats on playing with igloohghost! Hope to see ya at hypnothesis sometime soon
