My high speed fan would cut out when I hit a bump or turned a certain way. Thanks to this video, I only had to take off some of the front to stick in a long pointy metal pick to clean up the gunk on the fan speed connectors. Works well now.
That springy bit of metal is a ‘fusible link’. I used to see these all the time on wirewound resistors in televisions back in the 70’s. You are meant to use high melting point solder to ‘reset’ them. My theory is that, over time the solder would ‘cook’ and go ‘dry joint’ and allow the spring to operate. Quite often you would see where someone had bent the springy arm to take the tension out of it, so it would not operate 😂
@@harveysmith100 Because ‘normal’ solder would ‘give’ more quickly and you would be repeatedly re-soldering it. I guess that is why so many people bent the spring to reduce the tension 😂

"Half arsed" LandRover ideas are very common Mike but only on anything with the Green Oval, and all at no extra cost. the armature bearings in the fan motor are dry I'd be thinking. Lube them and the fan will run a lot easier with less electrical load.
@@marklong2248 never said I didn't like them, I've owned a number from a 1968 Series 2A a '77 RRC, '94 D1 to a '98 D1 but they were all a lot of work, and I can see why they had a bad reputation for reliability, it didn't effect my ownership too much because like Mike and many others I could fix them myself. I'm too old to be bothered now, I just want something to drive that isn't a 'hobby'.
100 quid; I'm glad I have a spare. I'll have to buy a pair of the magical pliers. The push buttons can become intermittent or stop working because of corrosion and/or dried out lubricant. Fortunately, they're repairable, it's the same with the fan speed switch.
The resistor for the Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500,4000, appears to be identical and seems to work fine on my '94 Disco 300Tdi. It's not very expensive and is readily available. Chinese made...

Hello Mike, I have 2 pb with my heater unit, (on my 1989 RRC) first gear (low) doesn t works, and fan unit is more and more noisy. My vacuum switch for in/out is out of order too. Thé question is, since i found at thé scraps à disco 1 (killy), if it is useful to remove thé dash of thé disco to find useful parts for my RRC ?(from what I know, killy disco is 300tdi from 1997)
The 89 will be totally different - this is why we swapped the 1991 to a 1995 dash as it has a better heater and shares common part with the discovery It is not an easy job to do, but I have known owners put this disco dash in the early RR
Ok, thanks for you response, I Nevers though about puting thé disco dash in the rrc, it was juste about thé vacuum switch, thé fan and thé fan switch witch have 3 gears in my car.
You hit the nail in the head! "Cost nothing to do but time" On mine i find that's so item the case. A case if cleaning the C**p off .... You got a fairly good puff out if that blower finally....
thanks for the good video, I don't have to disassemble the panel with the radio, just fix the heating resistance.👍🧑🔧
Glad it helped
I used to dismantle these for a living, far more fun to take them apart knowing you’ve not got to put them back together!

Good comment John.
Why a high melting point rather than a low melting point solder?

Yeap - all day to fix a heater - the Disco turned out to be a good buy after all!

Good call on the bearings.
Actually it is a good call on the "Half arsed" comment
Half arsed but still running or fixable after 30+ years. Maybe not that shabby.

Knipex do a really good pair called the Knipex twin grips. Ridiculously good and adjustable for size
"Look at the sh*t on here" 😄😄😄 Get that on a t shirt or mug in the merch store Boom !
love the 4 screw holes on the centre unit near the gear stick from the 'car phone' hand set.
Came off a RR, so it would be the cup holders as they are on both sides

Good to know
I recommend Lysol instead of fabreeze because Lysol disinfects. Excellent job either way!
Didn't have any

Poutine is a Quebec dish - cheese, gravy and chips - many variations of this all over the place - I am not fond of the cheese!
