OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD I ended up taking this through all 12 keys. I practiced for almost 2 hours. I haven't practiced that much in one go since I graduated from music school as a teenager.
I've been following you for years. These last few episodes have been fantastic! You're getting into a fascinating area of musical study and understanding. Thanks 😎🤓
33 solos and cool licks keep me pretty busy. This video is nice to mix up my routine with. Others have asked for minor, I too would like some "darker" sounding blues content from you (think Gary Moore, The Prophet). I'd buy something like that in a heartbeat.
Absolutely great! The most helpful exercise for my brain and my clarinet in years, love the time you take for each exercise. Thank you so mucho! I´d also love to kindly ask for minor keys exercises in that way :)
Is the chord in the background a simple triad? Does it has any tension on it or is it just the voicing that makes it sound like with something extra? Thanx for this wonderful lesson.
Great exercise! It works well just singing the notes also. When I first followed along I was surprised in a couple of the exercises by the root note (1) going up ( to 8) instead of down like in Ex 6 1 6 b6 5. Maybe using 8 instead of 1, or an up arrow would clarify the intention.
Hello I write to you from Madrid Spain, all my life I've been trying to get into the music world. I play piano en guitar and my level is beginning or medium lately i've been playing very much guitar I'm come from Rock and Roll pop but my question is I'm trying to developing my technique and my no lights off music on my instruments in this kind of exercises are very very very very very very useful do you understand then the solos and improvising and I can practicing this exercises on guitar but I would like to ask to you if you know any channel how about useful very useful exercises on guitar do you can recommend me a good Channel like your channel but on guitar thank you very much
this is so great thank you that's exactly the kind of exercice i need to do ! do you have any tips for making this myself ? like a generator of melodic sequence in numbers ?
It helps you as a singer to "hit" notes with more confidence. As a writer it will help you to find the right chord or melody note without having to "poking" around
you're videos have been crucial in me taking time to improve my ears everyday and truly, the benefits definitely show in my writing and musicianship. It's just when someone asks me why should I train my ears if I don't play jazz? I can't seem to explain them, because I don't have a reasonable answer. for me it's just something like a magic potion which shows itself after a few months in doing whatever you're doing in music much better :) @@JazzDuets
Jerry Coker's book does some similar things with number patterns. In fact I'm working on on some of these right now. I think I will grab a few of yours and work on them. Coker works just one pattern at a time through all 12 keys. It's a bitch but I'm finally able to do it.
Why not use the solfege names? I find they give more "character" to the notes than numbers, and they are easier to sing. Btw every time I hear you, I want to learn the Sax. Incredibly beautiful sound.
@@JazzDuetsnumbers are great! Being a native of Nashville born and raised - though now living in Inverness, Scotland - learning songs by numbers is just "how it's done". Singers, man, that's why. 🤣
@@nils8584 b2 is ra, b3 is me, #4 is fi, b6 is le, b7 is te. @JazzDuets I also like numbers and use them all the time, for example in my notes but they are awkward to sing. It's easier with one syllable for each note. And I'm surprised recently how efficient singing in solfege is. Even when there is a difficult part of a classical piece that I rehearse, I sing it in solfege a couple of times and it sort of engraves it in my mind. And it's so easy to play it in every key afterwards.
Hy. My RUclips channel is called "TV de Olho nas Gerais"; but, my name is João Viana. I live in BH city; Minas Gerais; Brazil. I love studying music with your video lessons; I'm studying Soprano Sax; However, I have additional difficulties, because you record your videos with your beautiful soprano sax in C. My saxophone is in Bb; then, to study the scores and at the same time hear their articulations I need to transpose from Bb to C, increasing a tone; This makes everything much more difficult for those who don't have this skill. I have already purchased some of your studies in PDF; but, I was faced with the need to make the necessary adjustments; an additional hassle... I would love to continue purchasing your video classes and printed notebooks; but recorded in Bb. This can be resolved to help us focus on learning articulations; blue and jazz surrounds and swing; without having to worry about transposing the scores? Thank you very much! My man: You are killing it! More of this please.

That was fun. I was surprised how well I got on singing the pitches. When I get out of bed I’ll try it on my trumpet.
You know it is a great exercise in many aspects... to sing along with it is one of these aspects. Cheers
Thank you! This is very helpful.

Relationship to the notes and different chords really indices the ears, I've enjoyed all your lessons, thanks so much!!

Really like this video… I try to do it everyday… it’s kinda magical… thank you!
I love this exercise
I REALLY dig these guided practice videos. Please make more.
It's beyond excellence
Wow, that's a good idea. Thanks.
This is a terrific idea. I’d love to see you expand it to the harmonic and melodic minor scales. 🦁☀️
YES!!!
I enjoyed these and will try them on piano, thanks
I love you!!! Thanks a lot!!
That's fun. I chose to sing along, to practice my ear training.
This is my favorite way to learn licks because learning by scale degree numbers immediately allows you to transpose into any key
Great stuff, keep up the good content.
great approach for those of us who play by ear!!! Thanks!!!
This is great! Exactly what I need. Thank you for this!
muy bueno, muchas gracias por compartirlo¡¡¡

I think this is a better way of practicing/teaching music because not everyone can sight read. ❤
Excellent excercises.
thank you very much
Gracias... Saludos desde Argentina.
Wow. This has REALLY helped me.
Omg ❤ exactly what i was looking for. Again! 😂
Is the chord in the background a simple triad? Does it has any tension on it or is it just the voicing that makes it sound like with something extra? Thanx for this wonderful lesson.
Fantastic! I turned the sound off and used it for other keys!
Love this. Thanks Nick.Just for clarity, is the backing track simply a major tonality without any 7th or upper extensions?

Please would love this for Minor scale

I wrote the melodies first, then added the numbers. But of course anything is valid and can be considered
Good
Question… We can overwork in the gym. Is there any amount per day we should strive for in this exercise?
Man, awesome material! Could you pls suggest how a singer/songwriter/composer could use these kinds of exercise? Thanks a lot!

I like numbers, they're more neutral. And more easy to write. Do you call a b3 a flat mi?
another reason to use numbers and not solfege: the numbers relate to chord extensions directly

👍
Numbers are easier to follow when my instrument is not concert pitch. Don't got to overthink by transposing on the fly
Remember he is in E flat. Tougher to play this in the key of C.
b2 is sadly missing.
I don´t think it is sad to omit the b2 sound in this exercise that has been conceived for newcomers

the time of the video relates to the time of the exercises in 3 keys. Does this trick the algo? Playing slow?
