  • In this weeks episode of iN-dEPTH we will take a closer look at the Otocinclus Catfish which is one of the most famous members of the freshwater clean up crew. These little suckermouths will keep busy eliminating that unwanted algae in our Aquascapes. Enjoy!

    I was thinking, how can he give an iN-dEPTH description on a species in three and a half minutes but dude you nailed it. Got more info from this short video than I can often get from five other videos twice the length. Great video and superb information. Commented, Thumbs upped and Subscribed...

      I couldn't find any info on the preferred water parameters of the fish like ph or TDS. Next to nothing on the fact that they take time to acclimatise and may die right away for apparently inexplicable reasons.

    Maybe this is a trend with this species. Suicidal otos have been being brought to my attention more and more. Provide these fish with a well planted tank so they feel safe and secure and less likely to throw themselves at a grinding power filter. Mine all have taken a different direction in life as they have learned to love their 20 gallon confinement. Best of Luck!

    This was pretty good, kinda sounded like you read off of a piece of paper, but I liked it. Just add a bit of emotion and you got yourself a good informative video. its a hell of a lot better than reading other fish keeper comments. keep it up :D

    Just got 6 of these guys for 12 dollars today, i use to have one that lived for 3 years but he died because of a native crayfish i put in my planted tank for holding -.- i still miss that guy, hopefully these 6 can fill the void. Love these suckers, pun intended.

    Nice video!! I really like Otos, but they are driving me crazy... Got three of them, one was too quiet, just standing on the ground, on top of my filter... In his first (and only) week here I had to rescue him few times stuck between the hardware and the glass, until his suicidal tendency got over. It took me few days to find him under a bogwood. Two weeks after he passed away, another one started showing the same weird behavior... They are amazing, but I need to keep an eye on them, always!

  • @marthanewsome6375
    @marthanewsome6375 6 лет назад

    I have mixed substrate and they prefer the sand. You can keep them in pairs, but never a lone, as they get depressed. People tend to over stock their nano tanks with these guys because people tell them that they can't keep them pairs, but in groups of 3 or more. In a nano tank 2 foot or smaller, keep in pairs or they could starve as not all of them eat commercial food. I have a breeding 3 footer, with 9 in there and have to supplement with spirulina powder once a day, plus the normal algae pellets and they love boiled cucumber and mulberry leaves, but leave the boiled mulberry leaves there for a couple of days and they will be gone once soft enough.

  • @rawegg8880
    @rawegg8880 9 лет назад

    You don't need special rounded substrate, u can also use sand or gravel... And you don't need to feed them flakes or pellets algae wafers will do... And most vegtables will not sink, u need to weigh it down with a rock

    Which type of algae ottocinclus catfish eat

    • @Aquahound
      @Aquahound  5 лет назад

      From experience I notice they will focus on diatoms(brown algae) along with any of the other unwanted green algae. They usually eat the stuff before it becomes a problem, which is why I suggest having an established tank prior to introducing these lil suckers as their diet is primarily in algae form. However if the algae growth is inadequate, I'd supplement with commercial algae wafers or slice up some veggies such as a cucumber, zucchini, or lettuce. Just dont forget to remove the uneaten veggie after 24 hours to prevent your water from becoming fouled. Warning: these fish have never been successful for me in controlling the dreaded black hair/bearded/thrush (BBA) algae. Hope that covers it 🥬🥒🥦😎

      @@Aquahound please tell me algae eater which eats all types of algae

    • @Aquahound
      @Aquahound  5 лет назад

      @@FactsCountdown From experience there is no one miracle algae eating fish. Your cleanup crew consists of fish such as plecos, corys, oto cats, siamese algae eaters, ect. Invertabrates such as shrimp and snails can also play a big role in combating algae/breaking excess nutrients that derive from fish poo, uneaten food, along with other decaying organics in the tank. Lighting intensity along with prolonged time your light is on for can contribute to algae growth. Check your water quality by performing tests to measure for high amounts of phosphates and nitrates as these also in large amounts can produce algae. Remember everyone's water quality is a little bit different(tap/well water) unless you are using RO water where you are remineralizing it in which you have more control of what elements you are establishing in the water column. Most importantly, when in doubt do water changes until you achieve sanity 😁

      I heard they are best kept in two for every 10 gal so if you have a 10gal tank you can have 2 if you have a 20gal tank you can have 4 and so on. idk about a 3gal that's too small in my opinion :/

      I have 2 Oto's in a 5 gallon and there isn't a problem but I water change weekly etc and the tank is kept very clean. Bigger is always better but my Oto's must be OK as they have mated twice now and it is very rare they do this in captivity. The only problem was I had some minnows and they ate the eggs...
