      @brunoraoni 6 лет назад +36

      Only real advantage in legs over tracks are in moutains or rocky terrain where tracks could either not gather traction or it dind't have enought clearance to climb, in other words, is verry limited, and then there is the complications of balacing a robot on legs, its too much effort for too little advantages, it would be better to invest in exo exqueleton technology. However, i have to say that something like a drone version of D-walker would be usefull in urban combat, but mainly as a disposable unit for shock trops or front line support troops.

    • @DickieDangling
      @DickieDangling  7 лет назад +99

      Avi Kohl Good point. I forgot to include that in D-Walker's drawbacks. It's deployment cost can more often that not, be easily way over 10,000GMP. When your still playing through the early parts of the game, that can be a pretty expensive buddy to have along for the ride. The equipment you can pimp it out with are pretty powerful though. It was probably designed to be expensive so it would be used primarily for end-game use, or repeat playthroughs when the player has loads of GMP to spare.

    • @eacaraxe
      @eacaraxe 7 лет назад +8

      On the other hand, fully-geared any of the other buddies can get fairly expensive to deploy, too. I remember my free-roam load-out on D-Walker being just as expensive as Quiet, DD, or D-Horse with full kit. DW is still clearly the most expensive buddy, but you don't have to stick everything and the kitchen sink on him, at all times; hell, it's usually better if you don't.
      I used all three load-out options liberally. I had a free-roam load-out with the support head, minigun, and wu pistol; a mission load-out with scouting head, minigun, and wu pistol; and a ops load-out for fireteam and armored unit extractions with the scouting head, fulton launcher, and wu pistol. I don't think I ever actually had a use for the intercept head, since if I needed fire support I'd simply take Quiet, and the other three main weapons were of extremely limited usefulness and made obsolete with the f-launcher.
      I do wish D-Walker had a fire support head that would work with main weapons for anti-armor and anti-aircraft fire, and a mortar arm. That would have made it a perfect buddy.

    Honestly, it's kinda funny, in that D-Walker is probably the closest to the 'Walking Tank' that Metal Gears should actually be.
    It's bipedal legs allow it to move over terrain that jeeps or tanks would have difficulty moving through (swamps, mountainous terrain, etc), alongside being small and stealthy enough to move in an urban environment without getting bogged down by general anti-tank actions. That, combined with it's ability to carry heavy weaponry and the ammunition required, that would require multiple troopers to carry and prepare to utilize, basically allow it to fulfill a role many consider Power Armour would fill today. It effectively allows a soldier to be faster, carry more and still operate in a general urban environment.
    So honestly, D-Walker should actually be more widely used in MGS, simply because it's actually a really handy design.

    • @AnonEMus-cp2mn
      @AnonEMus-cp2mn 7 лет назад +41

      It would serve as a great load-bearing platform, unfortunately the biggest drawback with the the closest real-life example (DARPA robotic mule) is that it is incredibly noisy; and requires energy, computer systems, and processing time to remain balanced and anticipate incoming obstacles.
      If a walking tank was piloted like a manned drone, the human element could eliminate processing limitations, but the system would still need to have long-term fuel efficiency and most of all, fill a niche role that a small vehicle (DPV) or a man-sized flying drone could not do as well.
      In terms of providing both supplies and heavy weapons, drones that can break off from a larger supply chain to help anyone when needed may be more useful than a particular foot patrol using one for the entire duration of a mission.

  • @lordhood117
    @lordhood117 7 лет назад +454

    Y'know what was REALLY missing from D-Walker?
    An option for a cannon, or better yet, a large-bore mortar. Imagine this:
    You're attacking a heavily-armed outpost where you not only need to take out some armor, but make enough of a bang on the other side of the compound to divert the guards away so you can sneak in unnoticed. Enter D-Walker's 120mm mortar. Just put it on the other side of a big rock formation, then designate your target. Using the iDroid's navigation data as a reference, D-Walker can rapidly make ballistics calculations to put rounds within an inch of your requested impact point.
    And the fun doesn't end there? There's also the option to select the round type on the fly.
    Need some visual cover? Smoke round.
    Need to distract the enemy in the dead of night? Fireworks shells.
    Want to knock out power to an outpost permanently? EMP round.
    Want to take out a main battle tank? EFP round.
    Want to see a bunch of Russians all high AF at once while simultaneously pissing off the CIA for depleting their LSD stockpile from MKULTRA? Psychochemical round.

      @@Blood0cean That'd honestly be the ideal use of D-Walker in a realistic setting though. Mortars and artillery in general are a thing. A small mobile shelling unit like D-Walker, especially if you could order it a bombing on the fly would be incredibly useful. You limit that ability with ammo though and remove the main weapon from D-Walker (As in no gatling gun or rocket launcher) and make it capable of only having one type of ammo at a time or maybe a limited number of ammunition that you'd have to choose before hand and it could be useful but limited and not that unbalanced. If you still think it's overpowered, limit the mission ranking to A.

      I wouldn't call any boss fight where the boss is able to obliterate you without giving a thought satisfying, but what really "triggers" me (not really but its a logical mistake in the game) is that they build these massive machines so they can have huge military prowess and the entire franchise is absolute batshit crazy about taking down these machines, yet , and I repeat, A GATLING GUN can destroy it.
      if a fucking Gatling Gun can destroy that machine in the first boss fight, yet several tanks, attack aircraft, RPGs and so on in the last mission of phase 1 can't, that's just inconsistency.
      The entire franchise is basically scared about a military weapon that has the same battle effectiveness as a WW2 Maus tank.

Its speed will get you in and out of heavy resistance pretty well.
    D-dog is primarily for "perfect runs" & target extraction.
    D-horse......... **flips through notes** yeah I got nothing. Moving on.
    Quiet is best for flanking & protecting you on those corners you may have forgotten to check.

      DH is more or less a stealth mobility buddy with his hiding in horse back mechanic amd the ability to Aim while on horse back.
      The second part enables you to use things like sniper rifles before quickly moving.
      Also in missions like Back up, Back down. I'll take D horse over DW because I can use the Recoiless Rifle RPG from horse back. It has much faster travel speed and the most damage of any launcher and it requires no lock on to be effective so D horse can get you to missile sniper spots and allow you to fire away from those spots.
      He's not always better than DW, infact in pure mobility DW has him beat outright, but in situations requiring speed and high damage/capacity, DH and your own anti tank gear is superior

    I agree, a Sniper rifle or Shield, or even Grenade launcher would have been GREAT weapons for D-walker.
    You could use the 50 cal sniper as a primary weapon. The shield could be a head upgrade (probably a more useful one at that)

    The one advantage to legs would be the increased elevation. That's what made it so hard to hide from Sahelantropus. It'd also let you shoot over walls. The problem is that having legs is also a massive downside for various reasons.

    I think for much of my play over the years, I only used D-Walker for 2 missions: Traitor's Caravan and Root Cause(and driving to Quiet in A Quiet Exit). But once DD has marked every item on both maps, DW with the Fulton Ballista became my farming champ. Call in an infinite sandstorm, collect everything I need, move to the next map. Do a few missions to reset items, repeat.

    you basically get the same tactical advantages of an organic being, but with more armor, if you put legs on a tank. ability to shift its weight as it moves can allow greater mobility, using terrain as cover.
    however it would absolutely need to have a tread type mode like the dwalker for higher speed transportation. reagardless it has a lot of advantages, giving mation a organic being's range of motion.

    D-Walker design is exactly what its supposed to be. a versitile hybrid that can be what you need it to be.
    D-Dog is the best scout/support as he's passive and will never give away your there (enemies will just shoo him off if they see him) alongside his attack command which will injure/distract/kill/stun/fulton whatever your looking at depending on what gear you give him. but he seriously lacks in a firefight making him almost exclusively a stealth buddy.
    Quiet is the best at attacking and arguably is just as good as d-dog in stealth because, for loud missions, you can equip her with a .50 cal rifle that will instakill any enemies, armored/shielded, or not. and for stealth missions you can equip her with a less powerful suppressed rifle for either tranq or damage, she cannot hit enemies with helmets from the back (but she CAN if they're facing her) but hitting the helmet will knock it off with either of her 2 suppressed rifles. however riot helmets and shields give her a hard time. especially if they know she's there. but probably her best quirk is her "2nd chance" mechanic. where if an enemy spots snake, and she has line of sight to him, she'll instantly fire off a shot at him even if you miss. she wont. her scout mechanic is a bit iffy and really should only be used when you have some time before you get to where your going as it frequently will miss multiple enemies. but her scout combined with the INTEL team's Field of Movement info is good enough for me at least.
    D-Horse is litteraly just transportation, the defecate mechanic is hilarious but its not really practical it is worth noting that D-Horse's speed increases as his bond does.
    D-Walker takes all 3 of them and combiens them into one. if you dont like switching your buddys then Walker will probably be the best for you. otherwise DD or quiet tend to be my go-to's depending on the situation.

    You can also drive D-Walker omni-directionally, by opening your iDroid and clicking Toggle Map/Nav, and then driving like normal.

  • @Techischannel
    @Techischannel 6 лет назад +3

    Fall damage: Thats where the Leg Parts come in, they can dampen or even help you Jump. If you build your tank Correctly it can have both legs (4 or 6) and Treads (Like a Modern Tank Does). The Legs are there for more Precise movements you cant realy do with Treads like getting just the little extra Angle for you Main Cannon or Climbing up hillsides you couldnt normaly with Treads. In case of the Smaller Vehicles legs can be used as Additional Suspension allowing for a even longer way of Deacceleration meaning less likely to hurt the Driver. So Natural Suspension in the Feet + Legs is pretty noice, then add just the little extra in rotation of the Driving Cab and you could get another Meter or two of Deacceleration out of it instead of a 50cm Crumple Zone or 1m Pile of Bones and Flesh.
    Okay yes usualy Legs on a Tank or Vehicle by that matter is bad, but in some cases it can be pretty good. Just never take just 2 go always atleast with 3 for more Stability or 6 if you want some very good smoothness.

Then I started an eliminate armoured vehicle mission. After unloading all 12 missile the D-walker has onto that blasted gunship, the gunship is still active. I was left with no choice but to retreat. • @GeorgeCowsert
    @GeorgeCowsert 3 года назад +4

    Tip: aim your sub weapon to have more fluid control over D Walker. This technically works with any weapon, but the sub weapon has the best angle for driving.
    Also, the idea behind "tanks with legs" isn't meant to be a "put super heavy weapons on a walking robot and sent it out" deal, but rather a "how do we get heavy weapons into an area that is near impossible to traverse without legs?"
    D Walker even subtly shows this advantage off, as it's driving mode can't scale steep inclines and has trouble with rocky terrain. Meanwhile it's Walker mode can climb almost anything that isn't a 90 degree cliffside.
    D Walker's been serving me well, and is my personal favorite buddy given how he's just D Horse but modified.

    He can outmaneuver locked on rockets if you know how to properly dodge.
    He is an unstoppable force against infantry, their biggest guns can be dodged, their amour won't hold up for longer than a few seconds, and the weapons that can't be dodged can be safely ignored because of how absurdly much health he has.
    This is all assuming you have maxed health and the gatling.

    I am currently playing the table top roleplaying game Only War, and the GM has let me make "leg on a tank" a super tactically useful move.
    Our squad has this guy who is literally a mutant (an Ogryn if that word means anything to you) with super strength but also is too dumb to be given a normal gun (he will destroy the mechanism with his strength and lack of ability to remember not to crush the thing). Normally he just runs into melee combat or uses a crude type of shotgun, but he is actually so strong that he is not encumbered by the weight of a small squad member and a main battle cannon being mounted on his shoulders. He is also so tough that the enemy can't easily take him out with man-portable anti-tank weapons and they cannot aim for him as easily because he is smaller than a tank. This means we can pass through terrain that only infantry can manage, sneak up on the enemy with a tank gun, shell them from a kilometer away, and then fall back through that same terrain before the enemy can realize what is going on and find us.
    Of course, having a man who can walk around with over 700 pounds of tank gun components on his back like it is nothing isn't a consideration for real life or most people in the MGS universe.

    D-Walker is actually far more maneuverable than D-Horse, if you aim while moving you can easily get around corners or tight paths in the terrain, even at max speed. Aiming with sub-weapons is recommended for this, you get a wider field of view. D-Walker is also the most capable buddy in fulfilling almost any combat role you need, not as excellently as all the other buddies but it can fulfill multiple roles at once which the other 3 can't. Though I do wish the intercept mode could use the main weapon it is given and that it had more options for weapons, a big, forward facing shield sounds pretty fun in tandem with the sub-machine guns, so would a rail cannon like from MGS4 and PW.

    • @DickieDangling
      @DickieDangling  8 лет назад

      Zach Mercer Since uploading this video I have found D-walker to be a lot more manoeuvrable by using that very trick! But my opinion has stayed the same, I think D-Horse just handles more naturally or intuitively. There's no tricks to it. From the very start I had the controls of D-Horse down. He's got that ease of use that D-Walker doesn't. Not to say D-walker is a ball ache to handle, but there's definitely a learning curve to using him proficiently.
