So much shade on these units... People remember the original VP330 goes for $3,000++ you can find these used for around $200 and take them for what they are fun portable music makers!!

Why not Use the mic for external acoustic input, this sounds great for what it is....
If you want the strings but you can forgo the vocoder then check out the Waldorf Streichfett. 128 voice fully polyphonic strings with the Ensemble.

It seems like this device is overpriced for what it does. I'm only interested in it for the vocoder, so is there a less expensive vocoder that sounds just like the VP330 Plus? I need something that can work in real time, is portable, and recreate the effects for Soundwave's voice in G1.
If that doesn't exist, is it possible to use the VP-03 without the keyboard? Thanks!

Exactly - reviews a vocoder but virtually never plays it... high end, low end, bass sound, chords, slide control.. not discussed.. what does it sound like with vocals dude, seriously!
Using the VP-03 in a Hammond Clone setup, one annoying thing is some of the Lower Manual Organ Drawbar assigns interfere with the VP-03 Volume Level adjusters, I've not been able to find a way to disable the MIDI Control Change data for the VP-03.

I mean the vocoder has barely any options, at leastthat one tone knob sounds good, but the synth voice has 0 options, so, just hear me out here...maaaybe it would have been a good idea to...I don't know...HAVE A SYNTH INPUT! I mean ffs, it's a good vocoder and all the other options are very nice, but not being able to do anything with the synth voice is a bummer. I mean, it's normal for a vocoder to have limited synthesis options, but that is solved by having an input so you can use any other instrument as a carrier. The ultranova doesn't have a carrier input either as far as I know, but that synth is a beast, wavetables, 6 envelopes with loop mode and 3 lfo's, killer effects... you can do whatever on it. It just makes no sense to me why this tiny thing wouldn't have an input, it wouldn't even be such a big deal to implement and would cost virtually nothing. One of the reasons I got the ultranova is because I don't wanna have to use the pc as a vocoder, cause of latency and a shitty cpu. One of the reasons I would consider getting an aditional, tiny, cheap unit would be to be able to use all other hardware synths as carriers, and when I saw this I was sure they would have thought that it was a very good idea to have a carrier input. Damn...
If Roland is gonna boutique all the classics we'll just have to wait for the SVC-03.....

It's now September 2021. It had to take me 5 years to notice this model, since (as I just commented below another demo of this module) I was not triggered by the Boutique series but kept fixating on other virtual analog products with vocoder as a bonus feature. Big mistake!!!!!

Nice and excellent review. Seems like a really nice unit. Do you know the specs on polyphony and how many oscillators per voice between the 3 sources ie. strings, human voice, and vocoder. The specs from roland don't say.
Roland should work on their manuals.
Wanted a factory reset because gotten in a sequence mode I couldn't get out of...
Looked for a factory reset and it said M+2+blinky start/stop and push them in a certain order when powering up. Turns out there are two buttons named 2 in the manual. One ensemble, the 4"female but #2 in the step sequencer is never referred to BUT THAT IS THE BLOODY BUTTON YOU HAVE TO PRESS!
Roland be a bit more specific, it helps with the workflow, not to mention the sequencer mode I couldn't get out of.
It literally sounds like any and all other software vocoders you can get (some for free).
It's not simply a vocoder. It's a replica of the VP330.

Interesting that Roland haven't listed that on their spec sheet on their website... Going by the previous Boutique synthesizer range (JP-08/JU-06/JX-03), I would assume 4 note.
Despite having built a couple of analogue vocoders myself, I will be buying one of these. Out of all the Boutique releases this year, for me, this is the only one worth buying, the other two are just rehashes of Aira gear.
But it has no line in and your stuck with limited carriers. Way too limited.
I've already built analogue vocoders with carrier inputs, so this will be a nice addition. Different sound to mine...
The D-05 is spot on also with all the extra cards built in, I think out of all Botiques this vocoder and then D-05 are great, Im just think external in is standard and how they can miss or overlook that is so damn stupid. Especially when most music today is so experimental and people want the freedom to feed anything to anything, I just don't get it. I might skip it because of that but someone said you could run audio through usb in but that seems a bit strange.

I have no clue why this man says plug-ins can't emulate classic strings well. Even the right soundfont can do that, let alone the free (and since last version much improved) Synth 1 , Arturia's Solina V, eSline Solina (free), EVM's Placebo (free), Korg's Legacy Collection (Wavestation, M1 ...) and too many others to mention.
my one complaint with the VP-03 is the lack of phantom power for condenser mics.
It has "Plug in Power" which you can use condensor mics with. Yes it is Phantom Power.

How dark can you get the voice through the Vocoder? Is it possible to get it a bit "demonic"

Use a line to xlr input. I use a Radial Engineering box for DI for my guitars, figure this would be the same deal.
No, he talk about the vocoder carrier input. Here the carrier is only internal, on the original you have ext synth input. If the poly is just 4, maybe better to go to Xils V+ vst
i have a quiestion for the k25 keyboard when i got to amazon to go check the keyboard agen it changet its price can anyone tell me if there are more of these keyboards if so can anyone tell me one that has low price?
This is NOTHING like a VP330. There's an annoying delay in processing the voice input on vocoder, no external synth input carrier, ridiculously small keyboard and polyphony, this is a joke. Is Roland becoming the Fisher-Price of electronic keyboards market ?

Ah, it has a formant record feature like on Korg Radias.. The Radias lets you record in 16 formant phrases of 7.5 seconds in length. It lets you play back/sequence those phrases instead of having to play and use a mic for the vocoder each time. It's great for something that has repeating phrases...like "Computer Love" by Kraftwerk. You can just trigger the phrase in whatever key/octave instead of worrying about enunciating correctly and etc. playing and talking live through the vocoder with a mic.

Guys, guys. It's right up in the fucking name. IT'S A VOCODER! If you want an affordable (and proper) vst-in-a-box string machine, Waldorf got ya covered.
from roland site "The VP-03 is a miniature version of the VP-330 Vocoder Plus", and VP-330 is famous for is vocoder AND string AND choirs (remove these 2 last on Vangelis sound of the 70 80s, you'll find it's an important part). If they wanted to make only the vocoder, they had to choose SVC-350
Yeah but it's marketing talk from roland. Who cares? If it's a decent vocoder and just that then there are almost no alternatives at this price point anyway, apart probably from used Ultranovas and Radiases

Extremely limited for the price. They aren't kidding when they say the boutiques are "limited edition".

Max16032 yeah imo the Boutiques didn’t come into their own until recently. The sh-01 is great with the added polyphony and sounds fantastic. The d-05 is wonderful and has 16 voices. The SE-02 and tr-08 are also fantastic. Other than that the rest seem too limited unless you NEED that sound.

Just for string try the Waldorf, far cheaper. Some don't like the sound, so it depends of your tastes (and It doesn't copy an exact string machine). For VST there is some options too that works pretty well.

Roland should just use your demos! Their product demo makes the process look klugey, you breeze through things and make it look quite user-friendly.

Why is the 🎹 so tiny?
Waldorf Streichfett has 49 notes Polyphony and more sound's options (Organ, Strings, Choir, Brass, Synths). With only 6 note Polyphony the VP-03 is completely useless.

Why o why are all the boutique done with those RIDICULOUS 2 octave keyboards? Does it never occur to them that we might want to hear all registers? Especially on the VP-330 where there is a drastic difference between lows and highs.
I would have liked to see how low it could go since this is limited on the original (you have to use pitch to go lower than what the keyboard allows).
Plus using a real master keyboard allows for sustain pedals which are the weak point on the original.

+FUTURE OUTFIT I have had the original VP-330 for 10 years. And I have a boutique JP-08 on which my only complain is the lack of polyphony. But sorry if I find those 2 octave demos a poor way to demonstrate the capabilities of those synths. I am not anti-Boutique or anti-Roland. But this is too much.

You'll need a ring modulator for that, not a vocoder. The Moogerfooger does a good job.

Sounds like there is lag on the vocoder.
I have one and can't say there is any lag in what I have done.
the strings and voice sound nothing like the original - the ensemble effect isn't recreated faithfully at all which used analog bbd chips. still seems like the polyphony is set at four just like the other boutiques which isn't like the original which was fully polyphonic with a paraphonic attack/release. this sucks elephant balls.

All I wanted to do was hear this thing in action. I hit play, I hear talking. I fast forward, I hear more talking. I fast forward again and I hear more talking. I fast forward one more time and guess what I hear??? YUP, mooooore talking. Shame that this video spent more time demonstrating the art of rambling instead of actually demonstrating the equipment that I wanted to hear demonstrated. Oh well, at least I’m not planning to purchase a VP-03 anytime soon, because this certainly wouldn’t have helped me to make up my mind if I was on the fence.... If only I could get my 14 minutes back.... THAT would be nice. Hopefully technology makes that possible some day soon.

Dboy321 Razo the newer Boutiques are great. I wish they would’ve had this mindset with the rest. The d-05 is 16 voices. They could’ve added more polyphony to the original line up and they’d all be well worth the price.
