    Your thoughts after hearing the song, is exactly why he was so slept on as an artist prior to his untimely death. They would just see his music on the surface level and mentally dismiss it until they fully listen and realize how deep his work was

    @AspireAndInspire 2 года назад +152

    You've definitely got your finger on the pulse for a lot of this. Very much about his struggles with addiction and how badly he wanted out of it, but just kept getting pulled back in.
    The whole thing with the match/cigarette in the coffin... that's very much the point. Lighting a match would be a problem because it uses up your limited air supply. And when he finds himself buried and facing an early death, on account of his vices and addictions, his first instinct is to jump right back into the comfort of those vices, rather than try to fight his way back out. It's a further display of that self-destruction.

      Mac Miller told everyone exactly how he was going to go out on every fucking album over and over and over again man. He just couldn’t save himself even though he knew what was wrong. It haunts me. He tells us he’s going to die to his addiction on every song and yet we were shocked and hurt when he was right.

      Same as Juice. Crazy.

    • @para9470
      @para9470 2 года назад

      Also, he first relies on the cigarette to help him go through it instead of just pulling out the knife to begin with and break his way out. He fell back on his crutch which to him was his addiction issues.

    You have only uncovered the tip of the iceberg with Mac Miller. And it is unfortunate only now after death are music professors and people around RUclips are finally finding him, but I am glad he is finally getting his due.
    And as a lifelong fan of hip hop. I was honestly surprised to hear that you hadn't really listened to or heard much from him. Because he realistically was one of the most important artists at least of my generation. And I say "artist" because you will come to find out how unbelievably talented this individual was with each project you decide to journey through. And I say journey because his discography is a wild journey.
    He touched every genre in his short life and really pushed the boundaries of what hip hop can sound like. He was genre bending, he was complicated, sophisticated and largely controlled his own sound due to his producing skills. From his frat-boy party rap days in "Best Day Ever", to his self produced Jazz album in "You", to his incredible and masterful album detailing his experiments with drugs and the effects of it on his life, music and relationships in "Faces", all the way to "Swimming" where he literally struggles to stay afloat saying that he's basically barely keeping his head above water but he is trying even though he is failing. Then to "Circles" where he basically is speaking to you from the grave in an almost cathartic hug prophetically detailing his demise while letting you know it will be okay. And unfortunately showing you how far he's grown artistically and musically only making it that much more sad because of how young he is and the inescapable feeling of never knowing how good he could have been, even though many of us know he was already legendary.
    But I will say that you picked up on a lot of the underlying themes with this song without knowing much about him.
    If you didn't know, he died of an accidental overdose in which he was given a substance laced with fentanyl. And he had been struggling with drugs for a long, long time. He's very open about it, his catalog will utterly surprise you with his unfortunately prophetic detailing of his ultimate demise, but with each passing album you can see the growth in this kid which was ultimately what made him so special.
    As for the song, for the most part self-care is a tale of two sides of him. The first part is basically him knowing he's digging himself an early grave with his drug use, the task it will be to climb this wall, because the availability of the drugs and understanding the situation, while detailing moments of his life where he crashed his car, got a DUI after his relationship with Ariana, and how he needed and wanted drugs to cope. Which was his way of self care dealing with all of the issues that surrounded him.
    While the second part was the other side of the coin and his small moment of hopefullness and triumph in which he actually takes care of himself. And In his moments of clear headedness and possible sobriety he understands he didn't know what he was missing in life and is thinking clearer, detailing that he misses her (Ariana) but then unfortunately alluding to the fact he is still has that feeling and that he always has drugs to make him feel better and wants that feeling which is oblivion.
    My suggestion, is that you dive into "Faces" a mixtape, recently re-released as an Album. It is a masterpiece that can only be described as a case study on addiction incapsulated in an experimental hip hop album that touches every corner of hip hop in one album. It is not as depressing as "swimming" and "circles", and in fact is even funny, witty, and insightful at times and will really help you dive into the world of Mac Miller.

    This dude was the epitome of what hip-hop needed at that time. It was a rude awakening to the struggles of mental health and drug abuse. Alot of the community pushed it under the rug cause they didn't wanna face the problem but the truth is "Swimming" then "Circles" as one whole project in its totality is arguably the greatest piece of hip-hop history that will ever exist. It's insightful. It's soulful. You never once question anything he's saying on any track he's just so devoted and passionate. The emotional relatability to his struggle is insanely detailed. It's just immaculate. He was the GOAT.

    Listened to this album on repeat so much when it was released, Over the years his music was always evolving, he wasn't afraid to switch it up and take some risks. His future was so damn bright, it saddened me so much when he passed. Celebrity deaths don't tend to bother me much but this one hit hard. I hope you check out more of his catalogue.

    My interpretation that just popped up in my head, is that the first part of the song is the addiction, the struggle to be sober, the struggle to be high again, while the 2nd part is the high itself, the moment when something claps you after you take it in, the feeling of "freedom" that some drugs can give you

    I don't want to ramble off a novel, but I just had to say that I more than appreciate your approach to reaction videos. You willfully try to dig deep and bring a perspective that is refreshing and missing on this platform. I appreciate anyone who makes me rethink music I have personally adored and thought about countless times. This is my first time seeing a video of yours and I am a fan. Can't wait to see more. Have a wonderful and safe weekend!
