- José Mourinho has been sacked once again, this time by AS Roma. And once again, the sacking comes due to a 3rd season collapse, which has become the norm for Mourinho, unfortunately. But how did this sacking differ from others, if any?
As Roma have been in a tough spot when it comes to their finances in the last two seasons, spending around €9 million per season in the last two campaigns. Why did Roma have these financial constraints? Transfer market restrictions aside, Mourinho perhaps could have done better with the squad that he had, as Roma’s performances continued to take a dive the more that time went on with him at the helm.

You also forget to mention how Mourinho has used A LOT of youth academy products. Bove is the next prodigy and was given his first start under Mourinho, now he is a regular first-team player at 20 yrs of age.

What are the other ones? As it is very atypical normally for Mourinho to give youth a chance. So if it is just Bove then it is more exception then the rule. Also wasn't there some FFP issues?
on the point of "us against the world", mou has this bad habit of turning on some players. if you've conditioned your players to believe its you and them against the world and then you betray that trust, it's nearly impossible to get those players back onside. Not to mention other players seeing that might start to lose trust too
Joses legacy is cemented at Roma with that European trophy win. The uefa cup robbery impacted them hugely
The thing is Mourinho didn't alienate the players. They have always been on his side. The part where you mentionned it falls on the manager to get the tactics right he actually said that himself when he said the squad can't be compared to the top 4. It's kind of disappointing that you missed that context. The losses you mentioned from the start of the season is becasue the squad changed 5 days before the start of the season. Matci gone, Ibanez gone, striker he's asked for (Morata/Marcos Leonardo at 15M but somehow Pinto went for Scamacca at 40M). Smalling injured and they still didn't get another defender. Mourinho brought over a dozen of academy players due to first team injuries he even stated in press conference that the club should go for young hungry players instead of established names. The Games Mourinho missed due to expulsion... please see why he was red carded. That is a strange one because somehow there is a lot of context missing in this video. I'm not sure if that was on purpose or if just shitting on Mourinho is more popular these days. That video was disappointing.

Mourinho is the only manager in the world who can lose 4-1 to Genoa and people pretend that’s not an embarrassment and underperformance. To be 9th in January is unacceptable, the football is unacceptable and to do all this knowing that he begged for players like Lukaku on loans (with high wages btw, not like Roma are committing to being sustainable) is a slap in the face

He's not finished in cup competitions as his siege mentality helps his teams win big games and go far in these competitions.
However, he is done as a league manager. His style is simply outdated. He might be better off managing a national team.

2004 version of José Mourinho would spit in 2024 version of himself. He made fun of defensive managers, calling them retrograde and washed out, and now, he became one of them. Some people evolve, others just devolve, Mourinho keeps devolving, and his attitude towards life doesn't help either, that siege-mentality of his is very formulaic, players these days don't feel they are at war against anything like before, they are players, not warriors.
I'm forever thankful what Mou did for us at Roma, he reignited a flame we had lost for so long. To see him gone hurts, I used to hate him when I was younger (born into a Barca household club of my life type of stuff-) but his emotions at Rome made me fall in love with him as a coach. His genuine love for Roma and our players both established and in the primavera was truly super emotional stuff. The worst I've felt in football (after anfield 2019) was probably that Europa League final, it was crushing. At the end of the day this is football and Mou's trackrecord in big Serie A games was horrendous, it's sad but I guess I understand. Forever thank you Mourinho, DAJE ROMA ❤💛

Winning the Europa league and it’s still “not working”? He has limited resources. You need players like Bernardo Silva and Thiago to play the beautiful brand of football. You need time and can’t expect him to get the team to play marvellous right away

I covered Jose as a journalist at Chelsea and Inter, at that point in his career, he was a fascinating and rather inclusive guy still, and took us in and showed us how much of his system was built on modern exercise science methods he got from the NFL and NBA and adapted for football. The guy got total buy in and excelled with teams that didn’t have massive starlets, he even molded a very mercenary squad in 2005 that played simply to win rather than win over fans. I can’t speak to him now, I moved on to politics in 2010, but he projected a public image that was very different from his private one at that time. Things may have changed after Madrid.
Surprised it took them this long to sack him. Roma have been horrific this season and i tried to watch a couple of their games and my God. They can barely string 2 passes together.

Mourinho gets labelled with it because his attitude changes. Falling out with players, his board of directors, bad discipline on the touchline. It's not always (just) about results.
You are ignoring the champions league semifinals though. Roma were still strong before that.

It’s crazy how teams talk about project, development, and building, but it never applies to Mourinho. 2.5 years isn’t enough. He loves Roma and the fans love him. The squad isn’t great and is overly dependent on Dybala. It’s honestly heartbreaking to see him go.
I was about to say that: Mou wanted a project and what he got is a impossible job kicking him out at the hardest times. Why not keeping him, building on all that talent he promoted from romas youth teams?
The roma squad is better than at least 4 teams above them currently bar inter and Milan.
It doesn't apply to Mourinho cos he is not capable of being part of a long term project. You only have to look at his career for evidence of that. His football is always dire, negative, too defensive. The difference between him and the best managers is they adapt over time, while he's a one trick pony, still doing the same as 20 years ago. Siege mentality, blame everyone else, stop the opposition playing. But he's a winner? Sure but then some clubs have had bucket loads of money, Chelsea, Madrid, Utd. And he couldn't last with them either.

Rabona, I’m always a big fan of your content. and I agree with a majority of the points you made and Mourinho has some blame to take for this abysmal season, however, a coach can only work with so much with the profile of players he has. Just simply look at the defense he’s working with. 2 players on loan from a championship league team, an 18 yr old with 60 odd minutes in Serie A, important player Chris Smalling out and Gianluca Mancini taking pain killers to just train. I haven’t even gotten to their fullbacks that are incapable of working in a four man defense but yet still struggle in a formation that some what alleviates them from their defensive duties but can’t even whip a proper cross into the attacking box. Mourinho HAS his faults but I don’t think he could’ve played “expansive” football even with the current squad he had at his disposal

He needs to take my advice and manage national teams. We could use a coach for Canada. This man is made for knockout football, and short group stages. He hasn't been an elite league season manager for almost a decade now, give it up and manage a national team.

I think the right club for Mourinho is Napoli:
Napoli need a manager that can to win the league- Laurentis is a mad man and I think he would get him in a heartbeat.
Napoli need someone to keep key players afloat - Mourinho can easily convince them to stay.
Napoli has the money to invest (I think…) in players to get success immediately. Mourinho is the manager for those occasions.

I hated mou before he signed for us but he was the best man for the job. He turned a serial loosers team to a two finals, team. I think every Roma fan will be forever grateful for the conference league, and the Europa league ,stoled, trophy. Huge mistake. Who do Roma think they are 😂 Before Jose they were nothing. Jose was given a project and over achieved and excelled early on. To get Roma to a position where they are consistently considered the best in seria A takes time, it’s a process that the Roma board seemed to understand when he first joined. Obviously early success has gone to their heads. Jose loved Roma the fans loved him he could have had a lengthy career there taken Roma to great hights and retired a true Roma legend

I know it's strange, but it feels like coming out from a fantastic yet very taxing relationship. I'm the first mou lover and would go to hell for him, we loved him (and some hated him) far more than anyone.
Still I'm not sure this was the bad idea everyone says it is: players were lifted up more than their actual capabilities ten times yes, but in the last weeks I felt something had broken in the changing room. I always felt mou pushed players on the brink of insanity and rode as close as possible to destruction, to get the best from everyone.
I feel we went over the edge after Fiorentina and it was a point of no return. You should have seen them play, it was devoid of any joy and passion, not the same Roma.
That said, Daniele is a wonderful person, he was sad he couldn't give anther career to Roma some years ago and now it's his time, we will forever be grateful to both.

This isn't a one-off anymore, he's never made it past year four at ANY club he's managed at! His management style absolutely has an expiration date. He's the 21st Century version of Béla Guttmann. An all-time great who is good for 3 to 4 years, and then he needs to move on.

I thought the sacking was harsh. I didnt hear rumours of a dressing room meltdown, but im not that deep into the Serie a lore. But he was still in both the europa league and in a top 4 battle. he was only 5 points behind 4th half way through the season. it wasnt a disaster season by any stretch

Honestly the kind of coach mourinho is, the only team i see where this "us against the world" could work would be in porto as the mentality in that club as a whole is practically the same, and this comes from a hardcore benfiquista who respects that attitude. That would be a fun one to see honestly

This guy is a top 5 manager in history, he won Roma their first trophy in almost 15 years in his first season, and took them to the Europa league final. This is a valuable lesson that no matter how much you bust your ass or what your accolades are, you’re easily replaceable. They need you until they don’t.

Great coverage as always! Its actually funny, Andy Brassell and Nicky Bandini called this a few weeks ago during some Serie A discussions on one of their pods. A conference league win doesn't mean anything for Roma when they are aiming to get themselves back in the top 4. I think sacking him now was premature coz they should have just binned him at the end of the season but i guess they were willing to roll the dice and try recover this season and sneak into those UCL and Europa spots.

@@-shikajin-4078 I mean it may be unrealistic but that's their aim and so for them it probably makes more sense to do it cheaper without all the nonsense. Coz of Mourinho was basically gonna do what Fonseca was already doing for them then they need not go through the whole extra cost and extra noise. Kinda like with Spurs when they tried the whole Conte and Mourinho thing when they realized actually they could just go back to basics and do it with coaches like Ange who may not come with all the fanfare and box office but will get the results on the pitch at a fraction of the cost. Coz that first summer transfer window they had for José ended up biting them and crippling them in subsequent seasons when instead of going for names they could have done a lot better business getting some good value deals instead of stacking up on big name injury prone players who inflate their wage bill.

That's why Adrian (Rabona TV) covered all sides in the video. A lot of those bad decisions stemmed because of Mourinho. That's why I give the Spurs example. Because sometimes you don't need the big budget flashy intense managers to succeed the most coz that short term thinking and planning won't necessarily pay off.

Also, Mourinho and Tiago Pinto brought a lot more advantages to the club besides the cup. Ever since Mourinho arrived the Stadio Olimpico was packed in every single game, something that hadn't happened in a long while, which also brought lucrative sponsorships to the club. Mourinho brought names like Dybala and Lukaku that would have never been at the club were it not for him.
The bad results are to be fully expected from a club that is mostly rebuilding after near bankrupcy by the FFP regulations. Cut the man some slack.

Their trajectory was correct and it's just a matter of timing. But the management seems to think that the current club has the material to be no. 1 in serie A
He should have taken the Portugal job when its was offered to him at the beginning of the season. I know personally he wanted to take it, its his life long dream to manage his nation's national team but he couldn't find in himself the courage to depart. Now, he's stabbed in the back miserably. Hope he learnt his lesson.

Can’t say i agree with you Adrian on this one. Players always stood by him, he promoted a lot of academy prospects and i also think it’s a call to wake up to reality when players string two three games of good performance and they suddenly think they are elite.

to be fair to this day i hate mourinho's tactics but at the end of the day this is the only thing i can criticize mou: he won an international trophy since basically ever, he made the fans more attached to the team, he did everything he could with the player he had. I don't know if the recent transfers like paredes or Sanches are his or society's fault, but it's clear that he didn't get the player he wanted and he ended up using academy's, with very good results also. It's clear that Mou wasn't the best choice for a long future plan at Roma considering he needs experienced players and he isn't a developing manager, but if we look back at what he did he couldn't do any better and despite a lack of game and a poor identity he set the base for a next manager (which in my opinion ddr clearly isn't)

Respectfully, I don't think you know what your talking about. I live in Rome and I watch them in person all the time. The players love him especially Dybala, Lukaku and almost all the other players. He doesn't just hoof the ball up to Lukaku. Quick interplay and buildup from the back is the foundation of Roma under Mourinho. I love Roma and I have to say most of your conclusions are very wrong. His recent form in the league can be attributed mostly to losing key players in every area of the pitch. As well as many other reasons not including his tactics or man management. Most Roma fans I know personally and in social media did not want Mourinho to leave and had no disdain to him other than the recent losses.
His contract was nearly up and I do not understand the reason to sack him. They should of let him finish the season for all he has given to the club even though it is a struggle watching Roma lose. I believe there was another reason for his sacking and it is being covered up by the recent results.
Tbh this time around he didn't engineer his departure. His major issue is that he hasn't evolved as a manager either in style or tactics. His preferred style is palatable when winning but is a eyesore when losing.
I suspect economic reality is largely the issue. Roma have spent as much as they can and desperately need to be in the Champions League to make things work. This season seems as if it will be another miss.

Definitely possible. Daniele De Rossi is NOT a perfect replacement. He lacked experience as a manager, despite being Roma legend. The really sad thing about this one for Mourinho is he didn't seem to do much wrong, which hasn't been the case with his other sackings. The players didn't seem to have turned against him this time, the fans (mostly) seemed like they were still behind him, the board did all they could to back him given the horrendous financial situation the club's in. The only thing wrong was the results.
All and all he can be proud of the job he did there. He's the type of man who'll never admit to having regrets but in this case he shouldn't have any, just wasn't meant to be.

Mourinho is still a great coach & personality...give him a team that wants to back him with resources & decent professional players & he will get results.
If you put Mourinho in at Man City, Madrid, Barca even Inter he would suceed because those teams have good quality players & or owners who will spend.

Its great that you highlighted the problem about Jose Mourinho, is the lack of football DNA. Its hard to discern how he wants his team to attack. When the players are inferior, he will resort to hoofing the ball upfront to a big striker and win the first ball. Its too basic. When buying players to suit his style, it will be so difficult for Footballing Directors or scouts. Its tough for Roma to get big name high quality players. But if JM has a more distinct footballing style, it would make it easier to find players for rotations.
For example, footballing managers that are "purists" such as Guardiola, Klopp, Erik Ten Hag, has a distinct way of how they want to play, the management can scout for players better as they understand their tactics.
JM wants his team to be solid defensively but when attacking, it always feels his teams relies on individual brilliance for offence.

To be fair Roma were clever enough to limit the contract to 3 years. He did reasonably well in the first 2 - similar to Fonseca in the league, a lot better in Europe - then came the collapse.
