9:0112:36 Tomei Expreme with Hi-Flow Cat! Lovee it! That tone & volume is perfect. It will be the complete look when the car has a more aggressive stance and some hot aftermarket wheels. 😎 29:0330:25 HKS Super Turbo with test pipe was actually surprising. That has a sweet tone, slightly quiet. I can picture this setup would sound cool if the Evo was pushin some decent power and had a little backfire here and there (not the excessive burble / crackle tune bs lol), to spice up this exhaust a little.
I've got the Tomei exhaust on my evo and on the test pipe I've installed a vibrant 3" ultra quiet resonator. It cut down on the drone compared to my Cat, and still got the extra 10-15hp. I think this is worth trying for what you're after.
The biggest issue with testing all of these exhausts is, once you find something you like, 800 miles later, it sounds like a completely different exhaust. My 95,97, and 99 GSX were like this, as well as my 2 Evos. I suspect it’s just the muffler baffles getting broken in and filled with soot. Which always makes the exhaust sound much louder.
Couldn’t agree more with this statement. I went through five custom sets of exhausts with my gti and after a few months of driving, 2000-3000km, it sounded completely different. Much louder in every case.
None of these systems use baffles in their mufflers. All use a perforated straight tube with absorptive packing (usually stranded fiberglass or stainless steel wool, sometimes both). If you can see through the muffler from inlet to outlet, this is gonna be the case 99% of the time. Baffled mufflers are usually a bad idea on turbo cars due to the inherent restriction.
Installed a few exhaust setups on my evo 9 back in the day and my favourite by far was the HKS super turbo cat back. No drone on the highway and had this unique raspy tone when opened up.
The HKS Super Turbo Cat-Back had my vote. Had the best sound and deepest tone. The Tomei is nice, however they are too raspy for my taste. I prefer a deep/clean sounding exhaust.
Great video, I have the invidia high flow cat, and stock manifold with the map straight exit no resonator and no muffler. I was surprised it sounded great. I’m dreading on putting on my tubular manifold since I love the sound as of now lol
In the test drives you weren't giving it much load or rpm at all the tomei was just starting to get into the rasp zone then you'd let off. To really get a full idea of the sound you need to do a full pull through the entire rev range.
If you can find a GreddyTi rolled tip, I think you would really happy with that exhaust. The problem is finding one. It was a deep tone no drone and doesn’t sound like a typical titanium exhaust. I have one with a cbrd o2 housing downpipe combo with a high flow cat and sounds so good. You should also just try a greddy exhaust as well. Might as well since you have 4 of them already.
on my EVO 8 i had a full buschur exhaust ... anyone making power kinda stayed away from the "big name" mass produced companies. The very first exhaust i had on mine was from APS that i imported from Australia . It was a full 4" system..... sounded amazing even when everything was stock.
As a general CT9A exhaust rule, if the mid pipe does not have a bung for the secondary o2 sensor, that exhaust was probably developed on an Evo 9. (Mitsu changed the location of the secondary o2 sensor from mid pipe on the 8 to the cat on the 9)
Im looking forward to hearing the Fujitsubo as its one I've been considering getting myself. The HKS silent power is very similar to the stock exhaust that the FQ models come with as standard here in Europe. I like the sound of the Tomei but really not so keen on the way it exits the rear at an angle. I prefer it when they exit straight off the back box. I currently have a Blitz Nur spec exhaust on mine and its a beautifully made and great looking system but my god its loud (105db without the bung) and I'm getting to old at 43 for that 😅 HKS do also make a full titanium system called the Hi power Spec-R which I'm yet to hear but might be worth a shot.
@@ObsessedGarage Yes i get that, but its the angle at which it exits at I'm not keen on, you will see it when you fit a 9 JDM rear bumper, the tailpipe exits at an angle rather than straight,
Second one better! Makes the engine sound amazing. .. and if this car is your daily. ...and 5 sec later Matt just said the same thing of your putting on 20k a yr to work.
Why not run some of the US made ones? When I had one back in the day, I had a Turbo XS with test pipe. it was aggressive, but very fitting for the car. along with the HKS 280 cams I had in it. ( I still had stock manifold and O2 housing ) If I were to build one today and run stock frame turbo. I would opt to go with the Australian cast mainfold from Arctec rather then full tubular.
My exhaust being in Cali but it passes smog tuned with e85.. Perrin 3" DP Testpipe works intermediate pipe works stealth muffler (stock muffler without flapper)
Before i had the hks super turbo but it didnt have the deep throaty tone i was looking for. Now I run a custom titanium exhaust made by rk titanium with a resonated test pipe and suprisingly it isnt too loud or raspy.
I am SHOCKED the Tomei sounds as good as it does, I figured Matt (and I) would hate it but I think this is the one car where their exhausts aren't too raspy. A lot of people don't run cats with their exhausts in general and especially with the Tomei though so that's interesting. Catted Tomei might be a hard combo to beat since it's fun and there's some benefits to having the cat.
You should try Greedy and invidia the are many or go up to a 3 1/2 inch. I would do the HKS #3 no cat and then a valved cut bypass. You also want to hear the turbo, induction, blow off valve.ect I wouldn’t go to loud you’ll probably not he
Hks carbon-ti is a better option for sound as far as the hks line goes, but sounds nothing like that tomei. I went with the hks carbon instead of the tomei because of emissions and the noise level
In my opinion, for a FI street car just run the damn high flow cat regardless. Less smell, not as loud, etc… and if you realllly need that extra 10-15 hp (spoiler: you dont) then just add another lb of boost.
I bet the HKS Super Turbo would be the one, if you got a shop to cut out the resonator and weld in a 3” SS pipe instead. That combination with HFC would be perfect
I’d probably do the timing belt if it’s been on for awhile. They typically go bad because of age rather than miles driven on the Mitsubishi engines. I haven’t owned anything with a 4G63 in many years so I’m sure someone else here is more knowledgeable, but on my 3000GT the timeout is 6 years/60K (whichever first).
The best is you have both worlds. You will probably want to switch back to the jasmy exhaust at some point of owning the car. Tomi works for now. While the car is fresh and exciting. I have tomi headers on my subie. Over time I’ve got over the sound of them. And want to switch to something little more thick like killer be or something.
If you do end up changing out and up dating the turbo too, is it possible the sound will change? If so it might be wise to not sell the other exhausts...? Don't some people also pipe their blow off valves into the exhaust system for better sound too...even though you sacrifice the blow off sounds, to get the better exhaust sounds?
Matt question, do you really see yourself driving daily loud modified JDM racer? I mean I liked it in my early 20s but pushing 40s I prefer factory, more comfortable vehicles. I mean if it’s for content I understand but actually enjoying driving this is kind of hard to believe
Totally understand what you’re getting at. I got into JDMs again about 6-7 years ago.. first thing I had to fix on my car was switching from test pipe to a high flow cat.. it made a huge difference in sound. It drove me crazy on the ~1200 mile trip home after buying my 99 3000GT VR4. I don’t think he has much of a commute.. but still, I like my stock cat back + high flow cat and downpipe myself. Loud exhaust in my 40s just isn’t my thing.
Lol, I liked the HKS exhausts. But then again, I did have Comptech on my Integra GSR 20+ years ago and I've only gotten more crotchety. I totally get the "it's not a daily, f*ck it" thing too though.
I like the Tomei. Solid old school JDM fart can sound but a nice deep tone to it. These videos are motivating me to sell my focus RS for a EVO again. Had a new EVO when i lived in Australia many years ago. Miss that car!
Honestly this is good for the EVO bros because if someone is going to do an exhaust system videos .....the right way it should be OG Matty style. ...
A resonated test pipe is the way to go in my experience. Sounds way better then a straight through in my opinion.
Makes me happy to see you out driving, and with a big ole smile while doing it! Keep it up Matt.
The last one was the best imo. Perfect for daily driving, but it still sounds aggressive at higher rpm

Man you really get a sense of just how clean this car is when you see the interior during the test drives
I've got the Tomei exhaust on my evo and on the test pipe I've installed a vibrant 3" ultra quiet resonator. It cut down on the drone compared to my Cat, and still got the extra 10-15hp. I think this is worth trying for what you're after.
Your motto should be I spend money so u don't have to 😂😅. I think every car guy appreciate you and this channel 💪🏿😎
you doing what we were doing in 1994.. nice to see retro come back

Yup. Exhaust needs to soot up before you get the real note.
Ha, ha... No. You can tell in about 3 minutes what an exhaust sounds like. They might change like 5% over time.
Mike-Squared moments are the best.
Completely agree with the decision of the Tomei sounding the best! The hks super turbo didn’t sound bad either
Installed a few exhaust setups on my evo 9 back in the day and my favourite by far was the HKS super turbo cat back.
No drone on the highway and had this unique raspy tone when opened up.
HKS Hi-Power 50th Anniversary Stainless is what I have with almost the same exact setup you have and I love it
The HKS Super Turbo Cat-Back had my vote. Had the best sound and deepest tone. The Tomei is nice, however they are too raspy for my taste. I prefer a deep/clean sounding exhaust.
The HKS Super Turbo!! It has the signature Evo sound in my opinion.
Great video, I have the invidia high flow cat, and stock manifold with the map straight exit no resonator and no muffler. I was surprised it sounded great. I’m dreading on putting on my tubular manifold since I love the sound as of now lol
I like either HKS, 2nd one more. Keep in mind a tune will change the tone too, more power.
In the test drives you weren't giving it much load or rpm at all the tomei was just starting to get into the rasp zone then you'd let off. To really get a full idea of the sound you need to do a full pull through the entire rev range.
Buschur Exhaust got that nice deep tone if you're looking for that. Gets even louder with a full setup.
Thanks Matt for the testing of all the exhausts, I’m going Tomei myself with a test pipe on my IX, your right those HKS’s are baby exhausts lol.
Tomei Expreme was the last exhaust I had in my IX. had a titanium lite spec first both sounded good. Tomei is the best.
The Blitz Nur Spec R is a great alternative to the Tomei Expreme and less hallow sounding.
LOVE the Silent HI-power perfect for a daily ✔️
If you can find a GreddyTi rolled tip, I think you would really happy with that exhaust. The problem is finding one. It was a deep tone no drone and doesn’t sound like a typical titanium exhaust. Been looking for a CBRD NIB turbo kit but since going out of business not sure where the overflow stock went?
on my EVO 8 i had a full buschur exhaust ... anyone making power kinda stayed away from the "big name" mass produced companies. The very first exhaust i had on mine was from APS that i imported from Australia . It was a full 4" system..... sounded amazing even when everything was stock.
The Fujitsubo RM01-A is going to be the best. Don't give up on it before trying it.
As a general CT9A exhaust rule, if the mid pipe does not have a bung for the secondary o2 sensor, that exhaust was probably developed on an Evo 9. (Mitsu changed the location of the secondary o2 sensor from mid pipe on the 8 to the cat on the 9)
The Mike on Mike close ups are awesome Mikey Mondays...
Matt hit up Devin Niemela and he will let you know what the perfect exhaust setup is for an evo. His evos sound amazing.
Hard intercooler pipes and especially a larger lower intercooler pipes make a HUGE difference with zero down side. More response, more power.
Right choice ….again, not surprised
You’re really gonna make me start looking for another Evo
They won’t be around forever.
@@ObsessedGarage I’ll buy yours when you’re ready to get rid of it
Congrats on 400k!
Thanks!
Thats the best part about having single exit catbacks, they're always cheap
Cant believe how quiet the first HKS was with a test pipe, surprising.
Im looking forward to hearing the Fujitsubo as its one I've been considering getting myself. The HKS silent power is very similar to the stock exhaust that the FQ models come with as standard here in Europe.

The Tomei exhaust has terrible fitment with the USDM bumper cover. It’s made for the JDM version.

Can’t wait for the bov video
The freaking cicadas were louder than that second exhaust. Literally.
Nengun is super solid. Ordered small items from them.
Mike has essentially become Ed McMahon (Matt's co-host)
2nd HKS exhaust for sure.
Last setup was definitely my favorite, but I can understand the argument for the Tomei setup--just a but too much rasp for my liking.
The last one is quieter but once your intake and blow off valve is on it may be the one.
In my own opinion, TOMEI all the way!
My exhaust being in Cali but it passes smog tuned with e85..
Perrin 3" DP
Testpipe
works intermediate pipe
works stealth muffler (stock muffler without flapper)

For my listening through Airpod Pro 2s, the HKS options sound the best. No rice sound from those.

I suggest get some arc parts for your engine bay
Hks carbon-ti is a better option for sound as far as the hks line goes, but sounds nothing like that tomei. I went with the hks carbon instead of the tomei because of emissions and the noise level
Order an STM exhaust. They sound and look great, and you can get jdm or usdm fitment
I think the greddy ti will fit what you’re looking for. I had about 10 different exhausts on my evo 9
Awesome cleannn garage, awesome cleean Evo! Wow! 👌
Nothing more Florida than a 2Fast 2Furious Evo doing pulls on a closed street with 2Fast 2Furious construction signs.
All sounds way cheaper than 1 Dundon exhaust set-up ! Matt getting on the phone with Dundon to see if they can start producing exhausts for EVO VIII !
Evoo ❤
Need to get a buschur racing to try out. They have multiple to choose from
Do a R35 GT-R next so I can know which exhaust system to get lol.

Tomei Expreme with the high flow cat for sure!
Mine has a full race manifold and HKS Hi Power Silent. If you're gonna upgrade the turbo, sounds would be fairly different
I bet the HKS Super Turbo would be the one, if you got a shop to cut out the resonator and weld in a 3” SS pipe instead. That combination with HFC would be perfect
That would be cool.
TOMEI sounds the best
Watching this car like a hawk. Please do a giveaway. It’s killing me more than ever. Sold my silver Evo to build a house and want another bad.
That first was the best in my opinion 8:11
I’d probably do the timing belt if it’s been on for awhile. They typically go bad because of age rather than miles driven on the Mitsubishi engines. I'm curious to hear how the RM01a sounds. It was a choice between that or the Legalis-R that I went with

I would leave the stock exhaust on it and drive the nuts out of the car and enjoy it 💪🏼
You better check them welds on the intake
Interested in purchasing 1 of the non used exhaust
I think the second or third exhaust is what I’d go with. The first one is just too vape boy/ricer for me.
HKS Super turbo with resonated mid pipe would be my choice.
Tomei Expreme Ti is the best one in my opinion...its liud but thwt raspy sound with cams and valve spings is ridiculous.
youll love the quiet ones if you have all the turbo noises.
Maybe HKS Hi-Power Spec R or Monster Sport Ti or Kakimoto N1 perhaps next after Fujitsubo
Not my cup of tea. But, glad you like it!
If you do end up changing out and up dating the turbo too, is it possible the sound will change?

I don't really have a daily driver. I just pick the car I feel like each day. My house is only 2 miles from HQ.
This Evo is not loud.
Tomei FTW. 👍😎✌️
100% Matty is going to end up with the same exhaust that my buddy Mark had on his EVO….. 100% and I’m going to lol
The hks super turbo exhaust sounds the best gives you the true 4g63 tone tomei is just too loud for me

Try amuse R1 titan, they are really good exhaust
No one tell him about Artec’s manifolds, 3.5” dump and turbo back exhausts 😜
Pls let us know again where and how you ordered these parts directly from Japan? Thank you.
Nengun
Tomei exhaust for the win🤙🏽
I would of thought Matt would go with the HKS exhaust 😄
When are the unused exhausts going up for sale? 😅
My vote is for the HKS Super Turbo.. The TOMEI is just too raspy.... Maybe the 4th one on the way is the answer ?
Tomei sounds good. Still prefer the buschur or stm cat back though lol

Matt…keep your second-favorite, too. Other than the “fun” aspect of the original, it seemed like a toss-up. 👍
I don’t like to just leave extra parts everywhere.
Hi! How are you?
Any problem fitting the Tomei Test Pipe with the Super Turbo Exhaust?
Not at all.
Thanks!
Matt doesn’t know what good sounding exhaust sounds like because it hasn’t been invented yet
"Fartiness"
JDM bros need a shirt with that word
