i like how Mail is getting some recognition due to being put into this roster, this game has the smash bros effect when it comes to a character that you dont know but want to know more about them so you look em up. Popful Mail actually had some nice voice acting for its time
Zipp and Orta had that effect for me. While I only played Popful Mail once or twice about a decade ago, I was familiar enough with the character that her inclusion in this game was a nice surprise for me.
Normally not into super overly anime games, but 90s anime is usually pretty fun and harmless and from the voice lines + hurt facial expressions this game seems goofy so I'm curious enough to check it out
And yet Popful Mail got cut from the English release of the Sega Genesis 2 Mini along with the Lunar games. The removal of those games are why I never got it.
00:07 To be fair, Ring Racers is still on it's infancy, SRB2K has nearly a decade worth of content while DRRR has been up for about a month. But the mods for Ring Racers that we have now are all amazing.
Yeah that's more or less what I have been saying. Sure there's flaws, but with how the game is just a month old at this point it's almost to be expected. And agreed on the mod department too. Definitely will be looking forward for more upcoming mods for the game.
@Fleskhjerta For me personally, the mechanic bloat is what turns me off of Ring Racers. It makes me feel like 3/4ths of the time I don't have any control over my kart because I'm tumbling, getting ran into, getting sprung backwards, etc. I used to complain about the drifting in Kart, but I'll gladly take that over everything else in RR. But sadly, the online community mostly migrated over to RR, so it seems if I want to play with others I'm gonna have to suffer 10x more than I usually do.
@@aluigiFromKart In normal gameplay, I would say that the character balance is pretty alright. But for Time Trials, I think it's just a problem that exists in many, many Kart racers. And that's the fact that in Time Trials the character with the highest top speed is gonna be king no matter what. You can pick most Kart racers and for Time Trials, it's gonna be the ones with the highest top speed. Like Bowser/DK.Jr in SMK for example.
Ah yes. The bumper. The bane of my existence and the item I fear the most. Not the SPB, not the Shrink, not even getting the Top scares me as much as coming around a corner only to stare green death directly in the eyes. Followed immediately by being cast beyond the depths of time and space by said green death.
I actually downloaded Robotnik Ring Racers exclusively because someone told me Popful Mail was a playable character. Needless to say the game has become my obsession, spectacular recommendation.
7:09 Oh look, it's me, the Fang that only managed to pass someone because they got stuck. Now the whole world can see just how amazingly terrible i was that race.
fwiw this game has a ton of charm even just with stuff meant for single player and it is great fun so i have no doubt the mods will catch up with both Kart ports and new stuff.
Not gonna lie, I kind of adore this game's single player even if the rubberbanding Rival AI can get me heated at times. In an era where so many games are multiplayer-focused, having some actual single-player content with a mixed up Grand Prix with Bonus Stages (both Prison Break and the UFO Catcher) is definitely some of the most fun single-player stuff I've played in a kart racer in a long time. And also yeah the original SRB2Kart to me was definitely saved by mods that added extra complexity to the game so I agree, mods will definitely bring new life and even fix some of the issues that is plaguing the game at the moment.
Man, I remember enjoying what I tried of this, but I never have time to do network stuff with this game. And its cool seeing your stuff, I remember your old mario 64/mugen funtimes, but seeing more ring racers content is awesome!
Entertaining video and I enjoy the meme edits you put in. But also thanks for introducing me to Mail. Recently been giving the original game a shot out of curiosity, and I would not have known her or her game if it wasn't for this little duology of yours.
I totally get what you mean by questionable track design. This game is way too slippery and bumpy for there to be such narrow tracks and so many bottomless pits. And the obstacles. Dear god, the obstacles.
Yeah the slipperiness of the game is one of those things that you just have to get used to. Not everyone is gonna be on board with it. My little secret for dealing with the slipperiness is simply to always go for drift boosts for both SRB2Kart and Ring Racers. Since the game got that Sonic Momentum thing going on, the games are generally very slippery as a result. Always going for a drift boost helps with mitigate the slipperiness to a certain degree as the boost will try it's best to cancel the sideways momentum and propel you forward. As for the tracks, yeah there are so many hit and misses imo. Some are great, while some are definite stinkers. Though I can say this, many of the base game tracks of SRB2Kart got a very similar case of varied quality. And like that game, I guess we just have to wait for some more high quality fanmade tracks.
The game very much runs on Sonic level design logic - that is, unless you know exactly what you're doing, you WILL go careening into the wall/a pit/a hazard at uncontrollable speeds. You have a surprising, overwhelming, and arguably excessive amount of control over your vehicle compared to most games in the genre, but between the speed the game is more than willing to hand you and the situations it expects you to deal with you're going to need every input and for some people (self included) taming the vehicle and learning to tackle those ridiculous sections without skipping a beat is arguably part of the charm. Not going to deny that there's some real stinkers in the track list, though. I have a very personal vendetta against Balloon Park in particular; the elephant room can kiss my tailpipe.
@@ThunderMan2212 That's a good analysis on the general track design of the game and kind of perfectly explain why got a bit of a love-dislike relationship with the game. With how the game is structured, it's takes a bit for peoples and even myself to rewire the brain for the changes even going from SRB2Kart to this one. There's a lot to master and learn if you wanna get decent at the game, which I guess some peoples today just don't have the patience for today. And hard agree on the real stinker part as well. I got some beef with Green Triangle is particular myself. Anything that causes you to lose speed right before the two ramps after the first turn will cause you to either use up a bunch of rings or spindash to make it up them. And if you go with the spindash you better how no one messes with you while you are charging that thing. Think I had to use two continues in a row on that course alone first time going through it in GP.
@@Fleskhjerta It's a steep learning curve and the game doesn't do a particularly good job onboarding you into it. It's fun once everything starts to click, but getting to that point is much tougher than in previous versions because of all the little bells and whistles the Ring Racer comes with that you need to take advantage of for it to really sing. The fact that mechanics like Sliptide and Null Drift don't even get a line in the tutorial honestly feels criminal given how important they are to maintaining control of your kart... I'd highly recommend giving the manual a read if you haven't already, particularly the Advanced Techniques section; there's a lot of stuff in there that can seriously help with wrangling the more volatile physics in DRRR once you start implementing it. Might not make you a pro overnight, but knowing the options at your disposal (and there's a lot of them!) is a godsend when the game shoots you down a ramp at 350% speed and leaves you to sort out what happens next on your own.
seeing all the comments on the differences between srb2k and drrr (mainly how hard it was to transition between both), im glad i started with drrr. i imagine if i had experience with srb2k prior, i wouldnt enjoy it nearly as much. the elephant room in balloon park can indeed go fuck itself though, absolutely the worst track ive seen so far.
I'm just glad it's not just me that is having a hard time with this game. I mean I was trash at Kart, but holy shit... at least I know this game is outrageously difficult regardless
0:07 I'm in the same boat where I like both and some do things better then others like all the legacy mods for srb2k...as much as I love srb2k..the only reason I give Ring racer a slight edge is because of how you don't need to port forward to play with friends (unless I missed something in srb2k)
The most recent update of SRB2Kart included Discord Rich Presence in it's files. (Version 1.6 that is, there should be a "discord-rpc.dll" in the game folder). Meaning you can host a play session of SRB2Kart through Discord as well. You may need to send some larger files to your friends though like all the Map packs as in my experience peoples have a hard time downloading map packs while hosting a Discord session but it's very doable.
Hey so, Mirage Saloon's booster jump at the end puts you on the hill, right? at 17:20 or so, you don't fastfall bounce. It's actually better to bounce there before you hit the ground because you'll go farther and go onto the flat ground.
I'm waiting for a mod that will feature characters from Angry birds GO. It will be cool if the sprites and animations match the animations from the original game
I figured out a way, but it's a tad bit complicated. Go into a Match Race with 1 CPU opponent, with the console (check the control configurations on how to open the console) turn on Cheats (should be something like "cheats on" or something of that sorts), then you type in "forcecharacters" then whatever character you want. (For example: "forcecharacters knuckles"), now every character in the race will be that character so now you type in "forcecharacters none" to disable it while the CPU is still that opponent, then you switch back to the character you want and restart the race. There's one small drawback though, the CPU's colors won't change in the process. Hence why she was Red instead of Green, as I believe the original opponent ended up being Knuckles or something.
I found a relatively simple solution. Right as your character hits the deathplane and starts getting warped back to the track, your character does blink during the moment they warp back to the stage. Simply make a screenshot on the frame your character is not visible and plaster in whatever edit you want over it all in your editing software.
Honestly, I can see many peoples would do the same. Fortunately, it's only a Replay Bug. Yeah let's just say that Replays can be pretty buggy, resulting in some funny results though.
I hope replays get fixed one day cause it sucks when some hectic races and comebacks are just fucked up and partically lost if you didnt recorded them at the time
It's on PC, you can easily find the game if you do a simple google search for "Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers". You know you got the right place if the link is something along the lines of "kartkrew.org". Be aware though that the game will start by giving you a lengthy forced tutorial that doesn't explain all of the essential stuff and you need to play at least one Grand Prix before you can play online. It's kinda dumb but that's how it is.
