  • Part 3 of a 4 part series of videos showing footage from the Itchiku Grand Show in Tokyo, 1982. This footage shows the work of Itchiku Kubota in this stunning kimono fashion show, restored from original VHS footage.
Part 3 of the Itchiku Grand Show focuses on the production of the show, and how Kubota "broke" many of the rules and traditions of kimono. Kubota wanted to modernise the approach of kimono, and introduced radical new ways of wearing and accessorising them, with clear Western Influences.
    From the video:
The production was completely Kubota's concept, and he took personal responsibility for all matters of production and stage effects.
"I had been bothered by the traditional rules, for example, that the left lapel had to lie over the right, and that one could not mix Western high heels or jewelry with kimono.
If the Japanese kimono is to remain important in our lives today, it must be brought up to date. We must go beyond the staid tradition of accepting the Kimono as a uniform set of rules."
And Kubota did not hesitate to break those rules. In his "Grand Show," high-fashion Western models wore his kimono in unheard-of ways: wrapped to show lengths of leg, or falling from one shoulder to the floor, or draped like cloaks over the shoulders.
Soft sashes replaced the traditional obi and were tied high, low, or to the side; beautifully dyed gossamer-thin scarves floated over the model's heads like veils; and all were accessorized with high-heeled shoes, sparkling costume jewelry, and dramatic hair styles or hair decorations.
