Robert England She is still being herself by staying true to herself. It’s INTERNAL. Just because she’s had physical altercations doesn’t mean she’s not BEING herself. Look at it this way.. Not being yourself would also be ACTING a certain way to try and be someone else. Ig not enough people are fortunate enough to look at it from a different lense.

She seems like a nice girl, but I'm amazed how obsessed some people can be with their own appearance. And how they feel that they can only truely "be themselves" by changing their body into something totally unnatural. No offense, but the message I'm getting is that her "real self" then is some kind of manga-ish fairy girl child. In my view that's not something to be proud of, and to be able to indulge in such fantasies is a decadent first world luxory.
+kixxalot That's an ignorant way of viewing body modification. People do this because it makes them like the way they look its essentially the same as buying new clothes or getting a haircut. I really don't see how it's a first world luxury seeing as people all round the world who are the poorest people have body modifications. also she's a tattoo artist so her work doesn't involve covering tattoos and wearing a suit.
+Will Wilson What is not only ignorant but plain ridiculous is claiming that extreme body modifications like this are the same as clothing. Obviously the former is permanent, while the latter is not. And of course ordinary body mods like piercings or a few tattoes are found everywhere around the world, but show me some third world peasants who had their eye color changed, their belly buttons removed, their ears reshaped and their bodies tattoed all over to look like a little manga fairy child, and who give an interview on a bed full of pluche childrens toys... If she was doing all this with just clothing, make up and other kind of removable stuff, I would have said almost the same about her by the way, but I would have shrugged it off as just a silly phase. Body mods and tattoes are not so easy to "phase out" though.

In those tribes it's the norm, you are socially shunned if you don't participate in what is considered tradition, and sharing the values of your tribe. It is therefore a necessity there, while in the west it's a luxory. But I can name dozens of other things that go in tribes that I am happy we in the west no longer do.

people taking body modification to extreme tend to have instability. you'll see majority of them were odd and insecure in childhood. we all have urge to be noticed and appreciated but most of us don't get all the attention we want for various reasons. eventually most of us mentally mature and move on with life. but for some, this emotion and validation seeking manifests in the form of quick rebellious decisions like having sex with many people, violence, trying all kinds of drugs, self inflicted cuts and also permanent alterations like tattoo, scarification, piercing etc without sense of foresight.
once the rush settles, the mistake is realized but ego gets in the way making them adamant that they're right and anyone saying otherwise don't want them to be happy. friends and family end up in the 'enemy' category while new so called 'friends' seems closer. for many, the downward spiral continues, pushing boundaries saying things like 'my life is already messed, might as well go the full mile' and forming all these rationalizations to convince that they're right even though deep down they know otherwise. thankfully, many break free of the viscous cycle through determination, hard work and help from close family and friends with genuine good intention.

People with tattoos and body modifications can be very much intimidating, or even difficult to approach and relate with.
But she is a person like anyone else, she just has a different lifestyle than most.
Body modification is not that strange, modifying ourselves is human nature. You want abs or a small waist? you have modify your body with exercise & diet. You want to be more flexible, you have practice stretching to make your body do things that it was not intended to. We create ourselves as humans an no matter how we modify, we modify.

Exactly, the only difference is what society says it's ok like exercise, change the color of your hair, getting your nails done, even using heals affect your body, and what's not ok like tattoos, piercings, scarification, etc.
And like she's saying we should just be ourselves if that means reshaping your teeth or just don't modify your body, both are perfectly fine. It doesn't mean you have to like it all, just respect everyone else decisions, likes and dislikes.

Rented Mule I searched up (graphic) pictures. Apparently, they literally cut out the belly button and the surrounding flesh containing the indent that is your belly button. Then, they sew the abdominal skin back up, closing the remaining flesh around the wound. If all goes well, you'll heal with little scarring, making it seem as though you never had a belly button in the first place.

Invision Software In some cultures, women are considered ugly unless their face is tattooed. In others, they flattened babies craniums because it was a tribe feature. Fat or thin is beautiful depending on the places of the world. In some african tribes, women scar themselves in patterns to be more beautiful. Even pierced ears are a mutilation of some kind. Not your cup of tea, we get it, but in a world where we are taught to be ourselves, yet not in the way we want, to be unique to fit in the mold, she got it right even though she's a bit extreme.
This is not beautiful. She is interesting but very wasteful. This is body modification and it is a very inefficient use of resources and body. 20,000 children die each day of preventable causes, yet this is "beauty?" Beauty is a subjective term & therefore has too many meanings to actually have any meaning left. I subjectively choose to see beauty in technology, healthy bodies and helping humans. I would argue that they are closer to objective beauty than subjective. The fact that people see beauty here, and argue about it, proves brainwashing by the media & culture to have you be concerned over irrelevant topics.

Grace rocks! She's so damn cool. She *totally* pulls off her look perfectly and it's great. There are some things I'm not a fan of (forked tongue) but hey, it's her body and she can express herself how she pleases. What I really like about body modifications, is the uniqueness to it and the new avenues they open up for personal expression. I think, we all have a certain perception of ourselves that may not coalesce with our outward appearance and I like to think that what she meant by that is if everyone could look how they perceive themselves to be, how great would that be. Me, for instance, I'm Black with dark hair, dark eyes, a big chest and a child-like face. If I was to look how I perceive myself without a mirror, my imaginary image is different than my physical image. Not by a lot, per say, but enough so that when I do look in the mirror it throws me off a bit because I don't see myself as having such round cheeks or I don't see myself as having as much hair as I do.
tl;dr I think what was meant by that statement is more about being in a world where what we think of ourselves and what we look like are the same. More body positivity preaching than body modification peddling. But that's my opinion

Being yourself can mean an infinite amount of things. If you're comfortable and find freedom looking plain, that;s great. If you feel like a "alien princess" or something out of this world, then be it! Be whatever you want to be, whatever makes you happy and enjoy life to the fullest. Give other people a damn break for what they define themselves as... this kind of self expression is only going to blossom even more in the world as time goes on.

I think there is too much focus on physical expression, it can distract a lot and take away from what really matters: the way people think, how they treat others, their actions etc. this is what really defines a person.

SpaceZombie I honestly didn't discover who I was until my body mods. I was always trying to fit in, and since no one liked the stuff I did, I pretended I didn't. I started talking about what they talked about. Having my body modified and wearing what I wanted freed me in the way that when I was talking to someone they'd mention it and I'd be like "that's right! I can be myself!". It filtered the people who approached me because now no one expected a "generic" girl, they wanted to hear the exclusive thoughts I had. I only met nice people, FRIENDS. My other "friends" slowly backed away and I was so glad to see myself rid of those toxic relationships. When I'm nervous I looked down, when I looked down I saw my hands, my clothes, I saw my hair falling on my shoulders and I reminded that now I was myself and I should never be nervous for being me. Now I don't even think about it, I'm always genuine and have my own ideas. I'm never embarassed of my body, I'm the happier I've ever been. My point is that expressing yourself both physically and mentally are important, and the two should walk hand-in-hand :)
That, is the most beautifully genuine thing I have read in awhile and I can relate in every single part about it. "I should never be nervous for being me" yes.
I'm not against physical expression by any means, don't get me wrong it's a wonderful thing (freedom in general is pretty nice). If it can help you help you to be yourself, push you in the right directions and in the end make you happy that's awesome. People who have prejudged opinions just because someone looks a certain way is fucked up and if looking 'different' can effectively filter away close-minded people than that's for the better. But at the end of the day it's just stuff you buy in a store (in my opinion), it's just how you like to look and feel most comfortable/sexy, nothing more. It can however, like you mentioned make you feel better and thus allow you to blossom in terms of personality (the interesting bit). Of course in a way your style reflects your personality or in contrast can project someone you feel you have to be. I just think people should't have to look a certain way to be accepted by either others or them selfs, the acceptance should come from within (that sounds deep I know) not from clothing, piercings or any other materialistic stuff. That brings me back to my original point, looks are very deceiving and literally don't say anything other than what he/she likes to wear/modify. People who share similar clothes/style or what have you can be completely different (of course).

You hit the nail on the head with this one Mr.SpaceZombie. It's fine to physically express oneself (I always do as I'm hugely into fashion and clothes) but people often give it too much weight these days. Often because they aren't able to get in touch with their inner self.
Not saying that's an easy thing to do. I certainly know I'm still trying. It's a constant journey, that physical expression can help aid.

I wish i could be myself, but when you have little to no friends, you really feel like you have to make a way for yourself to fit in. I wish i have more friends and i wish people were more open. I wish i have a group that i can call family, but oh well, maybe i just need some time.

One has to be so strong to do this kind of work, and cover their body in tattoos. I don't have that kind of strength. I have 17 tattoos that were done during cancer, so basically under duress. I've never transformed them into anything else, like other women have done. It's been 9 years now, and I still haven't decided to leave them or transform them into something beautiful. I admire people who have the guts and vision to create something on their body that gives them joy, confidence, and peace.
In the end she is herself, the way she wants to be. She looks at herself in the mirror and is happy with what she sees. How many of us can say that?

Tattoos makes me feel more beautiful. I've always had low self confidence, and I felt like my skin was never truly mine, but now that I have tattoos. I've taken my skin back. It's like I'm saying "No. This is my house. I live here, and I will decorate it how I want."
I only have four tattoos, but I plan on having both my arms done finger tip to shoulder, and at least one full leg, with a sprinkle of tattoos on the other.
