Hello and welcome to our guide of all things from Setesdal!
Today, we visit Sylvsmie Rysstad Sylv, which is run by Torfinn and his mother, to learn more about crafting traditional filigree brooches, cufflinks, and other jewellery worn with the traditional folk costumes. And to talk about an extended family that has kept the craftsmen’s and craftswomen’s traditions alive for over 300 years.

I happen to be a goldsmith who also knits, so for me this episode was the best of the series.Passionate about foreign language I appreciate the occasion to hear native speaking.Special thanks to Carlos for the translation.Don’t worry to much about the captions auto generated by RUclips, even if they are not perfect it’s better than nothing, some people always need to criticise . Thanks for continuing to entertain us
❤️👍🏻
I agree the translation in person as well as the captions have been great and very appreciated!
The silversmith work was so interesting. Love to see your cuff links and clasps hopefully it will be in next podcast. Bramleknits
I loved when Arne said he had a black belt in shopping. Thank you for this vlog and all your hard work. Safe travels
Such exquisite jewelry and accoutrements for the folk costumes! I also love reading your English translation while listening to Norwegian and siphoning out words that have similar linguistic roots (yes, I am a language nerd). I hope your series on Setesdal can eventually be featured at a historic site or museum in Norway as these programs are a wonderful contribution to the documentation of folkways of the region.
This is the safest version of "window shopping" I've ever experienced. Thank you for bringing us behind the scenes to this fantastic business.
This is a beautiful and special series. It should be picked up by National TV as a series to include all the Norwegian areas - With English subtitles for sure!
The silver work is exquisite.
What an excellent suggestion!!!
This series has been a treat! Torfinn’s family tree put me in mind of an expression my husband’s Swedish and Norwegian family used when I first met them more than fifty years ago: “If you are not a relative, then you must be a relative of a relative!” At the time many were first generation Americans living in Northern Maine who were proud to be citizens and equally proud of their heritage and traditions. Arne and Carlos, you have invited the sound of their voices to the front of my memory bank!
Thank you for this post. My grand mother's grandfather was a Norwegian silversmith. I have 2 gorgeous spoons that he crafted. Other pieces were melted down after they became dented or worn to become new items.
The entire series has been wonderful to watch. Thank you so much for sharing this beauty with the rest of the world. ❤️
Arne, I love how you said “I have a black belt in shopping”! This place was beautiful! Beautiful jewelry! Thanks to Carlos for his translations! Loved the trip!
Glad you liked it
My former partner was a jeweller and I used to often go to the goldsmith to get items repaired or made. This brought back so many memories of sitting watching him for hours.
The series of your trips was just fantastic, thanks Arne a d Carlos for sharing this with us!!!!
OMG!! What exquisite pieces!! The family should be so proud of their 300 year heritage as silversmiths, and the quality and beauty of their work!
Congratulations on the translation, Carlos. My mom was a 5-language translator by profession. She'd have been very impressed!
You don't know how much I like silver! All my jewellery is silver, nothing gold! May go shopping with Arne please?
👏🏻👏🏻 I am so sad the trip to Setesdal has ended. Thank you so much for sharing this journey with us! Such beautiful, stunning jewelry. Truly masters at their craft, going back hundreds of years. I can’t wait to see what new adventures you take us on next!
It hasn’t. One more episode to go: A Grand Finale!
@@ARNECARLOS YES!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I will miss this series so much! Thank you, Arne and Carlos!
Last one is on Sunday!
Such beautiful silver pieces....each one is a treasure! I can't wait to see what Arne's cufflinks look like! I'm sure they're stunning! And it's remarkable that they had their 300 year old family tree mapped out on the wall! Truly amazing that they could chart their lineage so far back! I'm in awe of the Norwegian traditions, and how they are so important to all the generations, and that they have kept them going! Truly amazing! You are very lucky to live in such a lovely country where tradition is still so important and valued! Thank you for sharing it with us!
As someone who makes jewelry I am so impressed with the workmanship of the gorgeous pieces. I'm so impressed by the history of this family of silversmiths. I know so little of my family history since I was adopted at birth so I love families with history like that. It's why I love hearing about Arne's family so much. I've loved this series so much, thank you!
You are welcome
This family truly stands out for continuing the same tradition. The wall alone tracking 300 years of silversmiths was quite remarkable.
I truly enjoyed the black-and-white segments added to the end of the episode as a summary of all your encounters during this series.
Thank you again, Carlos, for your great translations, though I so enjoyed hearing both of you speak in Norwegian. This has been a wonderful journey.
It’s not over yet - there is one more episode to go: The Grand Finale!😊
I thought I’d also compliment the introduction scenes of this series. These are not costume jewelry but fine jewelry for folk customers. Such skill!
Thank you!
Wow!! I loved l learning about the craftsmanship that is used by the silversmiths and the 300+ years of their family history!! Also, I love the ideas of practicing what you saw! I am practicing my Norwegian Knitting in hats and other things so when I cast on the big goal of a cardigan/jacket, it will help my stitches flow. Thank you for an amazing Setesdal trip!! I am so grateful to you both for this generous series and all the hard work!! Good luck with your black belt in shopping, Arne! 😂🤣😂 I agree, Carlos, the math in my head was amazed by all the components in the beautiful family silver pieces for the folk costume accessories! Gifted souls!
Stunning, beautiful and intricate jewellery. Wonderful tradition being passed down by the generations.
The best!
That was great. I absolutely enjoy you two. You entertain AND educate. You are never boring! Thank you
You are welcome
Audible gasp at first sight of sølje! These artisans are absolutely incredible. What an honor to be able to join them, watch them work, and discuss their craft with them.
What amazing adventures you have had! Thank you so much for taking us along with you.
Sad the series is done, but as you said, new adventures await and I can't wait to see them all! ❤😘
There is one more left, see you Sunday!
@@ARNECARLOS I'll be there!
This has been a wonderful series. Today, watching the silver beads "pop up" from rings was incredible!
💗
What a lovely end to ur trip. Stunning silver work. Wow! 531 pieces in the rose. Amazing. Fantastic crafts in that small area. It's great to see the traditional crafts still going strong in this day and age. Thank you for taking us on ur trip. 👏👏👏👏👌👌👌❤❤❤
Thank you for joining us!
Me too Blackbelt in shopping ❤️🌹
What a Gift to Share 😊❤ all these videos from Ur travel What Experiences Beautifully, Wonderfully, Thank U All Great to learn and see, BEAUTIFULLY!! ❤😊
What a lovely series and a perfect escape from the realities occurring in the world.
😀
The most beautiful detailed silverwork. How lovely to get to see it. Thank you...
You are welcome Sara!
Love this as I made jewelry in college and appreciate the skill that this intricate work requires. A million thumbs up!
I left a thumbs up but only because there's no other way to show how much I have LOVED this series! And still there's the one with the music. It will be so exciting to see Arne's cufflinks and your costumes complete. The black and white 'lice' sweaters are so amazing - very classic and beautiful. I love that while they are all so different, there is a cohesive look that keeps the traditions alive. You two work SO hard to bring great content and yet you make it look easy. It can't be, so we viewers have much respect for you and your team. And we learn so much at the same time. What a lovely country; both the scenery and it's people. Thank you sincerely for all you do and most especially for this series.
😍
What a wonderful look into your Norwegian roots, traditions and social history.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing all these Sedestal traditions with us - all that talent making all that beauty - the whole series is very much appreciated.
This silver work is so amazing - beyond belief! I can’t find words to describe it. I have loved this whole series. I really hope you do this again with another area of Norway. I have a much deeper appreciation for the cultural richness of your country. Thank you so very much!
You are welcome Kara!
The metal work is stunning. And she has here genology right there. This was amazing. Thank you.
This was a spectacular ending to such a beautiful and informative trip! To see such amazing handmade bling left me speechless! if you ever return please take us with you. 👏🏾
The series hasn’t ended yet. One more episode to go😀
I loved everyone you spoke with , all the history of the crafts and the country side. The colors used in all the clothing and shawls are so beautiful, and the silver work , wow. Thank you Carlos and Arne.
Love the September videos. I am not Norwegian but I love watching how other cultures live. Makes me see how much we are all similar and unique. Thanks
You are welcome!
Excellent series. So interesting to see the artisans at work. No fast fashion!
True!
Thank you for the great adventure! Your country is so beautiful. Traditions are wonderful. The USA is such a melting pot of cultures that families are losing their traditions. Or evolving new ones. Love it!
❤️😀
Interessant å se! Jeg må si det er utrulig kjekt å høre dere snakke norsk, og jeg er så glad for at dere har valgt å sette kulturarven i fokus. Applaus fra Averøya!!!
I've been enjoying these videos so much. I know they've been a lot of work for you,but they really are great.
Exquisite! Thank you for taking us along!
What a treat its been going along on this journey with you guys. Tusen Takk for bringing us along. ❤️
You are welcome
Stunning!!! And the patience and steady hands and eyes needed for this intricate metalwork!!!
What a beautiful shop, how do you choose just one piece, it's amazing so wow. Every single piece has its own beauty, & such a family tree of silversmiths, just wonderful! They should be very proud of their family history!
Thank you!
I would have loved to see Arne shopping for his cufflinks. I love shopping too. Beautiful art work again. Thanks
I don't have words to describe the beauty and intricacy of that jewelry! I can be patient but i would not have that much patience! That was incredible!
I have so enjoyed this series. Thanks so much. The jewelry was breathtaking. Your culture is so rich and beautiful.
All the people are so talented and so proud of their traditions. 😍
😀
Thank you for including this section. Those pieces are stunning! The family traditions are remarkable and so inspiring. The entire series has been such a treat.
It's amazing!
I almost cried at the end Goodbye to Setesdal...sad to have this Amazing series come to an end but so happy to have experienced and enjoyed it with the Arne and Carlos community. Each episode had it's own special charm ! Your Love of country, and passion and appreciation for history shines through every moment you've spent with these incredibly talented artisans ! I hope someday we do get a return visit...it would be fun to see Arne making waffles in his folk costume as you stir up a kettle of beautifully dyed yarn !
We are glad to head that you liked it, make sure to catch this Sunday’s episode as we have a special guest from Setesdal
I feel so fortunate to be watching all the talent and dedication of the people and to Carlos for the translating. This is wonderful! So many talented people! THANK YOU! Karyn
This series has been such a wonderful introduction to so many things in your country and culture. It's been a pleasure to watch and learn. Thank you for taking us on this journey.
You are welcome!
Stunning silver pieces! Such talented, meticulous and patient people. I can’t imagine making the first component of a Settesdal sølje and realizing I had 530 pieces to go! 🤣 Thank you for the fantastic educational and visually beautiful Settesdal series! ❤️😘
This series of Setesdal was Wonderful!
Looking forward to more from this beautiful region of Norway.
Another fabulous episode. I feel as if all of these artists and crafts people are my friends. Thank you for introducing us!
.
Breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you for expanding my horizons 💜
What a wonderful episode and series have loved every minute roll on next summer thank you to yourselves and all the brilliant artisans and experts xx
One more episode to go!
@@ARNECARLOS brilliant I didn’t realise can’t wait x
I have my grandmother's sølje, a souvenir from when she worked on a farm in Norway in the late 1940s. It's tiny compared to some of the examples in the video, but she would wear it as a brooch with contemporary clothes, and all the dangling "cups" really make it something special when it's worn. I should give it to somebody who will wear it.
Loved this series! I learned to listen carefully to the Norwegian words and picking out familiar ones like manchette from French for sleeve and platte is plate and is silver as in the Rio De La Plata in Argentina...Some German too but I can't remember what word that was, and of course a hint of English like lockdown LOL!!!
Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Arne will have to show us what he bought. It’s be so hard to choose. Thank you both for this series…so enjoyable!
Thank you for this wonderful series. When you first mentioned a special project I hoped it would include some some special guests or a closer look at traditional Norwegian arts and crafts. Wow! The series has been above and beyond my expectations.
❤️
Brilliant. That was SO interesting. I feel like I know much more about Norway now.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful artistry. I loved it. It’s worth rewatching again and again.
This has been so wonderful to see the people and traditions of my great grandfather’s homeland! Please do another series!
This series has been so fascinating! It is lovely to meet people who have created such beautiful items for so many generations. Thank you both so much for allowing us to join you on your journey!
You are welcome Laurel
I don't want this series to end, but I know there are more great things on the A&C horizon.
It hasn’t ended. One more episode to go 😀
Outstanding, gorgeous, fantastic etc., etc.!!! These pieces of jewelry are unbelievable and all made by hand! This was another wonderful view of the artistry of Sedestal. Thank you again.
Wow! What beautiful craftsmanship, gorgeous jewelry. Everything is so colourful, I love colour 😍. Thank you Arne & Carlos for this wonderful trip. I'll be watching these episodes again.🙂
😀
I hope that Setesdal is prepared to welcome your 134K friends from around the world! You better give them a heads-up before we all descend on them!
So sorry to leave this fascinating place.
What absolutely beautiful work!!! Thankyou both so much for taking all of us along on this journey. I have truly loved every bit of it. I can't wait to see what other delights you come up with over time. Documenting traditional arts is so important. You have just ensured that many more people develop a love for traditional Norwegian crafts, and maybe renewed an interest in traditions from our own heritages. Thankyou for all that you do. You are truly a blessing to this world and most especially to those who watch your videos.
Oh wow!! Another FABULOUS craft!! What absolutely amazing silver work!! The patience to make these gorgeous jewellery pieces is unbelievable. Am really curious to go and explore on their website!
Thanks for sharing! And Carlos, you nailed the translation - AGAIN👌😋
What a gift you’ve given us! Thanks so much!
I love the idea of being a black belt in shopping, Arne. Do you run courses in that🤣.
This jewelry is wonderful. I am the inartistic descendant of many generations of silver and goldsmith's, but I have never seen work as detailed and intricately wrought as this.
Oh NO! I didn't realise this was the last in this series. 😒. Please take us on a return visit with you soon.
Wow!! These pieces are exquisite, to see exactly how they were made was amazing.
Thank you both and all the people you visited, they were so gracious.
it’s been a very interesting trip to Sedesthal. Thank you.
Thank you for joining us
Awesome series. Thank you for doing such a great adventure and taking us.
You are welcome Linda, thank you for joining us!
Outstanding! Such beautiful jewelry!
Very
Arne and Carlos, thank you so much for this series! It's been a wonderful journey and I am forever grateful for this opportunity to go and explore with you, because if not for you, I doubt I'd ever be able to meet and see these beautiful people, their crafts and traditions. I hope there are more to come!
So do we!
Thank you so much for this wonderful series. I feel like I’ve had an overseas holiday from down here in Australia 💜
We hope you enjoyed your holiday
We didn't see the black belt in action! Did your credit card say ouch?!!! How did you choose amongst the extraordinary pieces? I loved this episode.....definitely the wow factor. I was a little sad to know it is over but happy to know there will be more adventures to come. If you go back for waffles, keep it a secret. Seeing waffles is not the same as eating waffles. I, as well as you I would imagine, were taught to share. If only.you could come through my tablet......then oh yes waffles please and thank you! Thank you for bringing your beautiful traditions and scenery for us to experience! You're the "bestest'! 🥰
Magnificent silver work!!! All of the pieces looks so beautiful on the Folk Costumes!
Can’t wait to see what Arne bought at the Silversmith’s shop!! ❤️❤️
Wonderful to see other crafters with patients working “stitch by stitch”. Agree with Arne that all these visits are inspiring to sit with some detailed work of our own! It all much more fascinating then picking out these letters on this little phone.
👍🏻
I'm really impressed with this episode. The similarities between this filigrane and the portuguese one from the North (Minho) are incredibly. Even the costumes. Wow 😍
Amazing, beautiful pieces. Fascinating thank you for making this. Hope this didn't bankrupt you when you got to the shop!!
Wow, wow, wow!❤
❤️
It has been a great pleasure to travel with you in Setesdal, and I have learned a lot from your guests. Than you so much for taking all of us with you on this interesting journey. I hope for new adventures !
Thank you for joining us
This series was delightful! I am proud of my Norwegian heritage.
It’s not over yet. One more episode to go 😊
Thank you so much. Lovely trip and thank you for sharing your lovely culture.
Love those sweaters!
They are truly beautiful
I think after this series we are all going to revisit canvas work embroidery and pull our looms out of storage and set them up. Arne, I thought of you this weekend. My husband and I have a classic car and drove it to a show. There were three Volkswagens lined up: a 1956 Beetle, a 1967 Karmann Ghia convertible (my first car was a 1968), and a Squareback but I forget the year. It is unusual to see Volkswagens at local shows here in Georgia, USA, so this was a treat. I loved that you took beautiful pictures of your Beetle in scenic Setesdal. My father had a 1970 Beetle, but I actually learned to drive in my mother’s Squareback. I enjoy everything in your videos. You work so hard on them. Thank you!
Wow such beautiful silver work! What a wonderful family tradition.
Thank you for putting this series together. It's enlightening to see people treasuring their crafts and traditions. Makes me a bit envious - I'd love to have this kind of history. Beautiful countryside and gorgeous crafts.
Oh gosh another fabulous episode. Loved this. Thanks guys so much for taking us along on this historical trip. Arne hope you enjoyed your shopping. It has all been brilliant 👏👏
Beautiful craftsmanship! And what a family tradition! Great work with the translation/subtitles, Carlos!
