Thank you as always, Kelly. After seeing your previous video, I ordered up a light box and it is arriving tomorrow. I had a big, clunky one somewhere, but it either got given away or tossed many years ago. I like the slimline style as you mentioned because you can use it with your journaling. I also like tracing the basic shapes - although I am exercising myself more to draw just from looking. But when I just want to paint and not labor on the drawing, it is awesome! I also have the Pitt Matte Graphite pencil set. I got them about 2 years ago and they are a game-changer for sure. The are inexpensive and once I used them I can't see why anyone would draw with anything else. Beautiful pencils. (And we thought we had all the supplies we could ever need! HA!) I am in the middle of my next big project now, but I already purchased your "Birds and Blooms" course and look forward to taking some 'me' time to explore it. Your courses are the BEST! Thanks so much!
Sheila, thank you so much my friend! I appreciate your comments and continued support in my artistic ventures whatever they look like LOL You are going to love that lightbox!!
Kelly, Great tutorial for drawing! And I really love the sketches with just the dark areas painted in a black mix. To me it looks kind of "sketchbooky".
Beautiful! Just signed up for Birds and Blooms also! Really wanted to do Sparks as well but couldn’t afford both. Maybe next offering… love your style and gentle encouraging explanations!
Excellent video, Kelly! I love the detailed instructions on drawing the robin! I'm trying to strengthen my deawing skills, and I found it very helpful!
You are very welcome! When you start to break everything down into simple shapes first (circle, oval, square, rectangle and triangle) there is nothing you can't draw.
Lol, thats not so much cheating as learning. 😊 Speaking of pencils... I'm doing a Tangle Challenge and my new favorite "cheating" tip is to go over the pencil after its blended with the faintest watercolor wash. I use whatever left over puddles I have on my palette... even something that's barely a water stain with a little pigment will work to set the pencil and bonus points, it removes the shine. ❤😊. I find the very subtle tints are preferable on these. Wonderful video, I love watching you mix!❤
@kellyhoernig I'm glad to share. Some of the best tips I get are in the comments sections! I love this community ❤️. Hopefully, somebody will find this helpful... it tied some things up for me. I hate wiping my palate out, so I try to use the puddles for side projects and exercises.
@kellyhoernig Exactly! I have a huge book of mixed media paper just for that. I use it like a splash diary for 'paint alongs', challenges, interesting color combinations, how to's and what ifs. I keep a simple swatch of my different paint sets in the back for quick reference. I have a half size notebook for pen and ink. The paper is the worst for watercolor, but it will take a faint wash to set the pencil shading. I use a 4 x 6 for zentangle patterns. I use the left side for the step out and have room for notes and credits in the margins. I use my good paper and books for my 'original' work. 💓 I really want to start a leaf and matching color diary like the one you do! That looks exciting, but I don't feel like I'm set up yet for it.
Did you not use the neocolor white on the robin’s head? I love what you’re doing, just signed up for your Birds & Blooms. It would never occur to me to paint just half of a bird.
I did not use the neocolor on the head, I let the white paper show but in the palette box of colors I put the white there just so it didn't look like I forgot to fill the square. Thanks for signing up for Birds with Blooms, hope you love it!
I found your site the other night and have been binge watching all your gorgeous yummy videos, each one better than the last! I love your teaching style too! Would you share what font you used? I love it!
Thank you so much and welcome to In the Studio. I have a lot of playlists so if you find something you really like, there are more like it. The font is Prawn or Handwrite Prawn, something like that. It is a fun one with the underlined o.
