“I like auld Hawick the best, wi each hill + heathery crest, it guards the grey auld toon below, I like auld Hawick the best!” The first verse of a song written by my late Great Grandfather Thomas Ker in the late 1800’s when Hawick was a thriving bustling industrial town, where the most beautiful + expensive knitwear in the world was made until the 1960’s. My last visit to Hawick was in 1998 + although the Hosiery’s were gone, it still had its busy joyful atmosphere. How sad l am seeing this now looking like a dour ghost town with hardly a shop open or soul to be seen! I’m only a half Teri…(I was born + bred in Jedburgh until age 12 when we moved to Sussex 64 years ago)…but all of my Maternal family were Teri’s. And now, an old lady myself, I cannot but wonder what it’s future will hold by the next century! Thank you so much for your film + I will enjoy going through your catalogue of others now. 🙋♀️😁
Thank you so much for your comment. I go to the borders now and then an hope to add to the Scotland playlist. I will have to look your great grandfathers poem up to read it fully. I am pleased to have your memories recorded here in the comments. Take care. ☺️
I’m from just down below the border. I love the little Scottish towns. Much fuller than the English highstreets. Be proud to live in Hawick my friend because I would be. A lot of our architecture is rotting away here in the northeast towns but Scotland takes a bit of pride in theirs. Proud of my Scottish roots.
Friday 13th September 2024. Hawick is a tired and unloved town. Dirty and downtrodden. 50% of the shop fronts are empty and the remainder look dated. I say this with a disappointed heart because the reason for my visit was to gauge the area for property for myself and my wife. Hand on heart I’ll never settle here.
Shame you didn’t find your forever house, I hope you find one somewhere else. The people of Hawick are lovely and the town still has some lovely old architecture. 😄
@@UKHIGHDEFINITIONWALKS Every town and village has lovely old architecture and Im sure the people of aHawick are lovely. We certainly found them nice and accommodating. But certainly, as a town, disappointing. For context, during our week we visited several towns, Jedburgh being our favourite.

@@Etherglide Jedburgh is particularly lovely, as is Kelso and Peebles.
@@UKHIGHDEFINITIONWALKS Agreed, we visited all those places and liked them all. Also visited Selkirk. That wasn’t great.
