Bjorn wrote the lyrics for this song when he and Agneta divorced. Took strength and courage for Agneta to even sing this song as it being so personal and performing with Bjorn. Between ABBA and The Carpenters....the two groups have helped me through the loves and pains of my life! Agneta and Karen Carpenter are two my all-time top vocalists!!!!

I have listened to this song a hundred times...and not until today I noticed how Agnetha sings the line "the winner takes it all" with a strong, almost triumphant voice....and then drops into a small almost cracking voice when singing the next line "... the loser standing small". I knew she was a great singer but that was a stroke of genius. Or am I just imagining it?

A lot of Americans are closet ABBA fans. Not so much anymore, but prior to Mamma Mia's (musical/movie) success people simply didn't want to admit they liked ABBA. Sometimes I think it is the reason ABBA never really hit it big here in the states vs the rest of world. It may be due to the fact ABBA's fan base around the world consisted of little kids to full adults including seniors. Watch ABBA: the Movie (1977 tour of Australian cities) and you see the breadth of the fan base's ages at concerts.

They were a dancey kind of place that started playing a lot of ABBA and there I was singing along verbatim, when I realised what I was doing I was like WTF???? At that point I decided I like them lol. This song in particular resonates with almost everyone...we have all had our hearts broken at some point.

Hello, nice yo see you in another reaction to the Sweden pop group ABBA, the leads in 70s, the decade post BEATLES
"The winner takes it all" is for me the best interpretation of a song that I heard in my life by any singer or bsnd
It is interpretation, because it is more than just singing, it is also acting and transmitting, and Agnetha does all that and on a superlative level
Beyond the morbid that the story of this song produces (the lyrics written by the guitarist and sung by his ex-wife), the structure reflects a change: it is the first time that whoever has the leading voice has been alone from beginning to end,
She goes one way and the choirs go the other (they do not add up, they remain in the background)
and in the end She is left alone passive and exposed, while the chorus and the music finish so up
That is why I feel that Agnetha does an extraordinary performance (extraordinary: out of the ordinary)
Her face is always very expressive and accompanies the various tones and nuances of her majestic vocalization.
(I remember her in other songs like:
    "I've been waiting for You"
    "S.O.S."
    "My love my life"
    "Thank you for the music"
    "Chiquitita")
"The winner takes it all" is a great song, it's in my ABBA Top 5
It is the favorite of British fans,
but fundamentally is the one chose
    by Björn (for its composition)
    and Agnetha (for its interpretation)
And their words is the one that is worth more
I like you for a reaction to "Chiquitita" at the Concert for UNICEF in 1979
or "Thank you for the music"
    at "ABBA in Japan"
    My best wishes for You
    and Happy New Year
    from Buenos Aires Argentina

I remember being scorned and ridiculed, back when ABBA ruled the airwaves back in the 1970's for admitting that I enjoyed their music. The melodies, lyrics one could sing along to, the sublime harmonising of Agneta and Annafrid, the sheer composing genius of Benny and Bjorn.. What was not to like...? It has been some vindication for me, that so many music luminaries since, have also admitted liking the Swedish Superstars.. Freddie Mercury once said that, " Beautiful Music recognises no boundaries of Age.."" !! How true that is of "Dancing Queen" which still brings joy to those hearing it even after 47 years..!!

2004 Agnetha released an album called "My Colouring Book". One song I came to love is "If I Thought You´d Ever Change Your Mind". Listen and comment on what you thought of it.

As for ABBA, the influence that they had on music, well I put them right up there with the Beatles.
There is a video of their tour of Australia and my favorite song from tour is
Why Did it Have to be Me.
Still might be able to find the tour on RUclips or still buy. Like Angelina Jordan ABBA’s music always bring a smile and a joy to my ❤️.
Always hoped that there would be a reunion tour but not to be. You are absolutely right never heard a song that I didn’t like. At 69 still fell the same. Always go back from time to time and watch live.

You guys are cute, ABBA are just phenomenal, I can’t believe that four unique talents came together just by chance, what are the odds?.

One of the best Abba songs for sure. Perhaps you could consider giving Steven Wilson's (of Porcupine Tree) cover of The Day Before You Came a chance? It's simple but effective, imho making it another strong contender for best Abba song.
And if you haven't heard it yet, I _strongly_ suggest buying/listening to Benny Andersson's album Piano covering Abba songs on piano only. Stunningly beautiful, and should be compulsory for any Abba fan. (And also this version of The Day Before You Came is just incredible.)

Agnetha walked out Christmas Day 1978, so they’d been split up more than 18months before this song was released.
